I really enjoy watching heavyweight boxing but what I don't like is watching these huge Russian town freaks. I want to see an American champ who will stay a champ and might unify the division. Who will it be?
Mike Marrone looks fairly good, but mostly because hes only 22 years old. cause nowadays apparently heavyweight prospects are guys that are 28 years old...like Povetkin. although at this point Povetkin is more than a prospect after his wins over Chambers and Byrd.
I think Joey Abbel looks fairly good too. 26 I think...and he needs to get a few more skills down, but he could be pretty decent if he became more polished.
Arreola looks ok to me, but he needs to get into better shape. but hes fairly young...he just needs to be stepping it up at this point, hes fighting Cliff Couser next. its not a terrible fight, but he needs to be moving up a little bit.
Dimitrenko seems like the overall best 'prospect' to me so far.
tony thompson is clearly the top american heavyweight at the moment
johnathon banks, though only a cruiser, is a better heavyweight propsect than overhyped nobodies like johnson, witherspoon, chapman, estrada, scott and butler
I still don't think they're rule the division, they'll have success certainly, but there will be plenty of heavyweights from elsewhere winning titles IMO.
I think like 14 of the top 15 heavyweights right now are eastern european. so the fact that you don't think they rule the division is extreme delusion.
I think Arreola needs to prove himself before we can talk about him being "great" down the road. I also heard Joe Mesi who I'm a fan of but he is getting up there in years. Chambers has potential. He also has a lot of time to work on his game because he's only 25.
I could care less where the next great fighter comes from. I just enjoy seeing talented fighters.
But in answer to the question, Michael Marrone has a chance to be pretty good. Also, if Tommy Zbikowski turns out to have any talent at all (or even sticks to boxing) he has a chance to do well just for the fact alone he already has a lot of publicity behind him.
Arreola is a heavy hitting crowd pleasing bruiser of a heavyweight, but he lacks the potential to contend at a high level with tough competition on a consistent enough basis to be considered great in my opinion. I'm probably the only one here who has seen Eddie Chambers fight more than a half dozen times in the past 5 years and he has continued to improve and win more impressively even as his competition got tougher. He consistently dominates the scorecards and has above average ring intelligence, movement, defense and pretty good hand speed for a heavyweight. I've also seen him land some very powerful shots, so I'm pretty sure he has the power to knock people out, he just doesn't utilize this aspect of his repertoire all to often for some reason, and he needs to work on that.
I see Eddie Chambers as a more promising prospect with more upside than Arreola, and I think he could be a quality top rank heavyweight in the future IF he can fine tune his power punching ability. Or, he may never develop the consistent power punch he is capable of and for that reason or another he could end up as a bust, who knows. He certainly hasn't fought anywhere near quality competition throughout most of his career up until recently...
Arreola has the more entertaining fighting style though, which is why he has a larger fan base and a greater volume of supporters/believers, but I don't see anything overly special. Once he fights top competition he will be tested and I believe more often than not will be outlasted and sometimes out classed unless his opponents unwisely decide to slug it out, which I see unlikely. Arreola is fighting his best right now and I don't see much room for improvement as far as his potential goes which makes me question his future value.
I doubt Chambers becomes a great fighter. Maybe a titlist though. I think the same thing about Brock.
I doubt either of those guys will ever win a title; I like to think that W. Klitschko and Sam Peter will dominate the division and unify, at least partially..
I just read somewhere that Estrada has had over 250 amateur fights! Pretty impressive, but when it comes to pros he doesn't seem like he has the passion that he must have had in the amateurs. I've seen him fight a couple of time and he has a 'lackadaisical' style which earns him decisions but only one KO in his 10 pro fight career.
johnathon banks, though he fights at cruiser, is a better heavyweight prospect than everyone mentioned so far with the exception of arreola..
id like to see banks fight matt godfrey and then challenge for a world title. he has a stay busy fight scheduled against lloyd bryan right now and im sure he is in the top-10 of the WBO already..
a lot of these guys are screwing around for 25 fights against bums padding up their records, banks on the other hand will have (hopefully) a world title by his 20th fight and some serious career momentum when he moves up... id say he could carry 225 pounds quite well.
jason estrada and chris arreola are what we got...Arreola is going to get his ass kicked once he gets to the top. Estrada is skilled, however.

I like Arreola, but I also fear that once he fights the best in the division he is going to lose. He style is crowd pleasing, but against a big puncher he could be in trouble.
Mesi all the way. He was on the cusp before the Jirov fight. Also Mesi would bring alot of attention to boxing, right or wrong, because he'd be a white american champ. Mesi would maul Briggs IMO, and would probably beat Maskaev. And it's not that I think he is a great fighter, but he would light up the division if he had a title. I dunno maybe I'm crazy
the problem with mesi is his durability. he came close to getting stopped by both light hitting monte barret and blown up cruiserweight jirov both of whom cant crack an egg at heavyweight. makes you cringe to imagine mesi in there with even a descent punching heavyweight that can bring it
Even though I'm biased when it comes to Mesi, I really don't know what to make of him these days. He's been fighting quiet often but not at the level where you can make a sound judgement on his progress or lack thereof. If after his next fight he doesn't step up then I'm not going to get my hopes up..
