We all remember a gassed out Michael Moorer down the stretch against Evander Holyfield, thru body language alone it appeared Moorer was content on letting the fight of his life narrowly slip thru his fingers against a champion who on that night was just not right.
But what happened?
Teddy Atlas got in Moorers grill and motivated his fighter like we have never seen before, hell Teddy made it just as entertaining in between rounds, there ws literally no lull in the action!
My question-could Teddy have given the same type of inspirational jarring to Oscar in the last 4-5 rounds of his fight with Floyd? Stuff like
(while you read this use your best Teddy Atlas voice) "Oscar listen to me, listen to me Oscar your gonna cry tomorrow, your gonna cry, throw the fuckin jab Oscar, this fight is easy when you throw the jab...Oscar look at me, look at me Oscar... can you give me 50 hard jabs this round, cmon Oscar look at me, throw the fuckin jab, this is your fight if you can do that, we talked about no regrets right, well then no regrets, tell me you remember that"
In retrospect ws Teddy the right guy for the job? Would he have let Oscar get lazy in there or is Oscar Oscar and his tendecny is to front run early and fade late regardless of who is in the corner.
Could Teddy have made the difference?
I dont know what version of Moorer you say was more active but please dont use the LHW version because that was a completely different fighter all together.
Moorer with Steward, came out and attacked Alex Stewart and dropped him twice in round 1. He was hurt in round two after taking a couple of straight rights. Then he came out in round 4 and finished Stewart in explosive fashion. Moorer then rose from two KDs against Bert Cooper and stop Cooper in explosive fashion with a beautiful combo in a 5 round war.
Moorer, with Atlas, sleepwalks through several fights. If there was a fight in which he showed real fire and passion, I can't remember.
Then Moorer, with Freddie Roach, fights Holyfield and comes out strong, showing a ton of heart and desire, gets up from FIVE KNOCKDOWNS, but the fight is stopped because Holyfield was just the better guy that night.
The laziest performances of Moorer's career came with Teddy Atlas. His most gutsy performances when he showed the most desire and fire in there were all without Atlas.
In your above post you mention a the 12th as a round where Moorer cam out with more fire...my contention is that had Teddy of said nothign Moorer would have floated along in that fight like a piece of shit and wound up losing...the case can be made, right?
Maybe, I guess so.
Moorer was just as inactive in the rounds following Atlas's dramatic speeches in rounds 8 and 9.
In fact, Moorer didn't even turn it up until round 12. He was sleepwalking throughout much the fight, outjabbing Holyfield but doing little else. There was one round where he started off nice, maybe round 6 or 7 (I'll have to check it), when he was more active, and that was BEFORE Atlas's speeches.
Moorer started the fight more aggressively, but became leery once Holyfield dropped him late in round 2 with a counter left hook.
Atlas's whole rep as this great "inspirational figure" for Michael Moorer with his Tony Robbins-like speeches is a myth, because if you see the fights Moorer had before and after Atlas, he shows way more passion and fire than he did with Atlas.
Moorer in general was one o the laziest fighters I can remember.

Had Atlas of said nothing I think we have a different fight, you may think he didnt change but I believe Moorer would have grown increasingly inactive in that fight has he of not had Teddy's cock up his ass.
1 round would have changed that fight and I will give Teddy some credit.

Oh more of the Teddy Atlas myth, I see.
It was around the 8th, 9th rounds when Atlas gave those dramatic speeches to Moorer. Moorer went out and slept-walk even more in those rounds following Atlas's speeches, prompting Jim Lampley to say "Moorer is going to get another tongue-lashing from Teddy Atlas after this round".
HBO's Legendary Nights can make things seem more dramatic and Hollywood-esque than it really is. See the fight in full and watch exactly what Moorer does in the rounds following Atlas's dramatic speeches. He didn't change his style or become more active at all.
Teddy Atlas is an even more overrated trainer than Kevin Rooney.

Even more interesting.....do you think it would have helped had Oscar paid the 2 mil to Floyd SR. and had him in his corner like he has the past several years? It's one of those "the world may never know" questions......AND who trains DLH for the rematch? We all know it will happen Floyd is'nt going to pass on that kind of cash and I don't see DLH going out without trying to avange a loss......
I dont think Floyd Senior would have made any difference-Oscar needed a guy who could forcefully put a sentance together...(Atlas)
He passed on a fried crack head for Michael J. Fox Junior.
Michael Moorer lets Holyfield off the hook if Teddy doesnt ride him like a jockey.

Yeah I believe Teddy would have been a factor had he been in Oscars corner.

Oscar need 1 round to force a draw...not on my card but on the offical card and I gotta believe if he had Teddy screaming at him which would have been the case, screaming at him to let his jab go...I gotta believe on the offical card OScar at the very least pulls the draw.
Yeah I believe Teddy would have been a factor had he been in Oscars corner.
First of all, Oscar has been in enough big fights to know he needs to throw the jab, he has nobody to blame but himself. No cornerman can fight the fight, it is up to the fighter himself to dig deep, and go for it. A good cornerman pays attention to what both fighters are doing in the ring, not just what his fighter is doing, and Teddy Atlas is one of the best at seeing the big picture.
It's easy to say in hindsight what a fighter did or did not do, and I am just like you, I know the fight was Oscars' to win or lose coming down the stretch into the "Championship Rounds". If he works the jab - he wins, but he didn't, he has to live with that, and my wallet is lighter because of that too.
Mayweather has the belt now, but certainly didn't go in and "take" it from Oscar, it was more of a case of Oscar just "giving" it away, he has lost the determination, and should go ahead and count his HUGE PAYDAY and just stick to being a Boxing Promoter at this point. Besides, he has nothing left to prove, he is a first ballot Hall Of Famer, and a man who gives back to his community, and at this point - it's what he does best, fighting, is not what he does best anymore....
could of, would of, should of but didn't. it doesn't matter who was training oscar he wasn't going to beat floyd. NEXT TOPIC
This has often been the story in regards to Oscar and some fo his bigger fights.
Mayweather has superb timing and unearthly type speed. I bet that right counter was on DLH mind all the time. Thing is I did not think Floyd could hurt DLH with any of his punches but I guess DLH thought otherwise. He shouldve jabbed the smaller man to death.
I would lay off the whole, "why didnt Oscar throw the jab more" if there appeared to be a reason for it.
Had Floyd of countered repeatedly with the right hand over the top of the jab we would not need to ask why wasnt Oscar throwing the only punch he could land cleanly, we wouldt need to keep asking this question but Floyd wasnt countering Oscar with a right hand over his jab.
There are reasons people abandon things. I feel De la Hoya being tired is not the only reason why he stopped throwing his jab. PBF had something to do with him not throwing his jab. Why is it so hard for yall to give PBF credit?
