Jones keen to fill Calzaghe void
Former four-weight world champion Roy Jones Jr says he is ready to end Joe Calzaghe's search for a big-name opponent for a July bout.
"I've got July wide open and I'd fight at 168lbs in the UK or the USA," Jones, 38, told BBC Sport Wales.
Calzaghe had been keen to fill a 21 July TV slot, but the big names were unavailable and he has now targeted Jermain Taylor in September instead.
But, if that does not come off, Jones would be keen to meet the Welshman.
It's the right time in both of our careers to give the British people a true fight," said the Florida man. "I've still got all the skills and I'm hungrier than ever before.
"Peter Manfredo Jr was way out of his league when he lost to Joe last week. Joe is a class fighter who needs someone similar - someone like me - to take him on.
"It would make most sense for him to come to the US. The British people will watch him whatever time of night he fights, and by fighting in America he will only add on the extra numbers of US fans.
"But I'm the challenger now and I have to go and get the title wherever it is on offer.
"I could see that there was a beautiful atmosphere at Millennium Stadium for the Manfredo fight, that's the sort of support needed to make a great fighter like Joe.
"I wasn't happy that the supporters booed the US national anthem, but I'm not the president so I don't know what that was about.
"I would love to go there and face 35,000 screaming Welshmen, I'm an entertainer and that's what I do.
"The promoters might get in the way of the fight, but there's no reason we can't come to an agreement.
"If we can't agree terms, I say give 60% to the winner and 40% to the loser. That's fair, so let's go."
Calzaghe's promoter Frank Warren tried to arrange a showdown between the long-reigning WBO super middleweight champion and Jones for last summer, but the deal fell apart over money disputes.
I know many Germans participated in the holocaust, the thousands upon thousands of German troops and guards required to run the camps and round up and murder Jews, Gypsies, etc means that many Germans knowingly participated in genocide.
Again not true,
thousands werent required to run the camps
Many were NOT german,
Many German were responsible INDIRECTLY by working for Beauracratic organisations, example would be the guy who signs the death warrants but doesnt pull the trigger,
its a long and complicated story, but you get the picture. lol
Of course im not saying some Germans did not participate in Holocaust or they are not responsible to a degree,
So again, your statements have elements of truth, and are yet are partially incorrect.
If you like when i finish my dissertation which is 'The Sonderweg theory in Relation to the Holocaust' i shall send you a signed copy lol.
Yes mate therefore you know for sure that MANY germans participated in Hitler's general schemes, without doing any kind of research or insight into it,
you are simply making an assumption, an assumption that Historical fact does not prove, depending on wether you are talking about direct or indirect participation.
Yawn,
back to topic please,
if u wanna argue that boxing is 'pro black' and claim that aint a generalisation, good luck to you.
regards.
lol.
I know many Germans participated in the holocaust, the thousands upon thousands of German troops and guards required to run the camps and round up and murder Jews, Gypsies, etc means that many Germans knowingly participated in genocide. I also know US Boxing is dominated by blacks and Latinos, given the paucity of well known white US fighters of the last decade. I'm not claiming that Boxing is pro black, just American Boxing, as you'd realise if you actually read what I wrote.
having national anthems before the fight in boxing is pointless anyway.
i can understand it before an international football match where the teams are representing their respective countries, but boxing is about the individual fighter...not where the fighter is from.
Its no win situation.
If Jones beats Calzaghe, his finished.
If Calzaghe beats Jones, people will say he was finished anyway.
True, but roy is a mear 3 years older than Joe, with no hand problems, so teh old age excuse for Roy, should he lose, is not valid to me :notworthy
Booing the opponent's national anthem was pathetic. It's a classless action by anyone who does it.
This'd be a great fight for Calzhage and terrible for RJJ. Sadly it'll probably happen.
Even England v Argentina at Footy????? youve got to boo.
Is that cheating, fat , argie wanker dead yet?
Certainly agree booing anthems has no place in boxing, but is ok in some other sports.
A generalisation is not a generalisation if it is proven to be true, and as Miksterious stated; just because something is a generalisation it doesn't follow that it is automatically untrue.
You are "being nice to me" you are just blowing meaningless hot air, doubtless designed to cover your less than total grasp of the issues at hand.

Beo did you hit the sauce early today? Which is it?
Actually im doing a dissertation right now on the Holocast etc LMAO.
No i think you need to brush up on your understanding mate,
they are BOTH generalisations.
Lets not get into the Genocidal debate, i was being nice to you by not wanting to point out anymore flaw in what you said, and cos im posting somewhere else as well.

...im serious, at sporting events here, another teams national anthem is rarely ever booed if ever, i fuckin live here, and have gone to countless sporting events in which both canadian/mexican/english anthems have been played. we dont do that shit here on a common basis.
It's happened: http://espn.go.com/nba/playoffs2002/s/2002/0422/1372480.html
It's also happened during hockey playoff games.
Jones isnt done... his just lost 3 times in his last 5 bouts, that not that bad... He'd give Joe a run for his money know doubt! Joe is a fast guy who throws alot of arm punches and doesnt have much on them, for instance the Manfredo fight what debacle that was why? stop the fight while Peter is bob and weaving and not being touched then when his gloves and occasionally face are being grazed!

Well up in where i am in North of england the support of your local team and local sporting heros is so passionate that the supporters will do anything to make the other team loose booing is one clear way to put them off their game. At the end of the day I and many of my friends dont give a shit about the national anthem anyways its just some stuffy old tune.
Americans will never like Joe..and Black americans will never have anything nice to say about ANY white athlete..
Annnnnnnnnnd there goes all of your credibility.
i find it hard to belive no one in the US has never booed at someone elses national anthem considering your the most xenophobic country in the entire world. This stuff happens the world over why is anyone surprized or bothered

I know many American Boxing fans and their attitudes through the internet and have also lived in the United States.
You may not have grasped the meaning behind the word "generalisation. Maybe a brief re-cap is in order.
Statement A: "All the German people collaborated in Hitler's genocidal schemes".
Statement B: "Many German people collaborated in Hitler's genocidal schemes".
Statement A is an unfair generalisation. Statement B is not a generalisation. The word "many" does not have the same meaning as the word "most". Many can mean a sizeable minority, whereas most would mean a flat out majority of people.
You should also remember that the argument behind the generalisations are not always proved incorrect JUST because they are generalisations.

styles make fights, and actually even a old roy jones could possibly beat calzaghe because calzaghe dosent have knockout power
And yet Calzaghe had scored 32 KO's out of his 43 victories (which compares rather similarly with Roy's 38 KO's from 50 wins.
Glen Johnson, with less KO's than Calzaghe, with more wins.
Antonio Tarver, less wins than KO's Calzaghe has had...with a similar KO ratio however.
BOTH of whom did not have particularly many recent out-and-out KOs previous to the Jones fight.
I dont really see where your statement comes from.
