I've always liked Larry for the questions he asks. Not that Max doesn't have the knowledge, but he get annoying sometimes because his voice is too squeaky.
I could never stand Larry Merchant and nor will I miss him if he goes. I like Max and I think he will be a good addition to the team. I would love to see Big George Foreman back tho or even Roy Jones.
Larry Merchant is a legend.
He always contributes to the broadcast, and his commentary is sometimes more memorable than the fights themselves.
In my opinion, Larry Merchant should keep announcing up to the moment of his death. With luck, he'll pass on peacefully after three minutes reminiscent of Gatti/Ward I round 9. He'll take a slug from his flask, smile in appreciation at the heart of the two warriors brawling it out in front of him, and then he'll be gone...to his next post: calling fights in heaven.
Best of luck Larry. Thanks for the memories.
:boxing:
Merchant will be missed. I love the way he and George Foreman used to argue back and forth during a fight. I like that Merchant wasn't the guy that wouldn't cheerlead for the HBO fighter and the way he would call a guy out after a fight. That is the reason Floyd doesn't like him because he knows Merchant is speaking the truth and he doesn't want to hear it. Merchant is hilarious and knows boxing. he will be missed. It was also funny that half the time during the broadcast he was probably drunk.
I like Larry, and I don't like Max. I knew it was going to happen sooner or later because of Larry's age, but damn I thought it would be a couple more years.
Larry Merchant can be corny, slow to the punch (pun intended) and annoying in the extreme. My otherwise perfect girlfriend will watch nearly any boxing match I make her suffer through, but if Merchant is on air: forget it. He drives her insane. That said, I like him. He's certainly been around long enough to know what he's talking about as much as anyone else. If you read what he says instead of listening to it, it's really kind of right on more often than not. In that respect, I'd miss him. If nothing else, owing to his longevity, he gets good responses from boxers after fights because they know him. They might hate him, they might love him, but they know him.
As for Max... for those of us who grew up in NYC, we remember him as a little kid, screaming his head off on local cable public access. Black and white, cheap video productions (as I recall everyone from the cameraman to the key grip shared his last name, a small crew but nonetheless). There is no questioning his love of boxing. He has been at it from the get go. Had he not gotten the national gig with espn and subsequently hbo he would no doubt be just another nut-job with his own public access show. But he had/has something and the powers that be pounced on it.
I don't know Max, never met him. But I'm always defensive of anyone who discredits him. I've got a couple of years on him (possibly an understatement) but he's the real deal, as far as love of boxing goes. He might get overly enthusiastic but you can chalk that up to the fact that he is literally living his dream. You can disagree with him but I guarntee he can hold his own and then some in any boxing debate out there.
I say: Go Max.
Yeah I noticed they always nut hug the HBO fighters.. But at the end of the day, they don't score the fight. the judges do!.. What they say will not influence the judges what so ever because the judges cant hear what they are saying so to me.. It don't matter. I pay to watch a fight and its usually to noisy to hear what they are talking about or I just don't pay them any attention.
Partially agree, but think its important that commentators dont attempt to deceive the paying public for the monetary gain of the company they work for.
Actually it's not just this,
I propose that he, Lampley and Lederman deliberatley attempt to infuence the scoring of viewers in favor of HBO fighters, perhaps not all the time, but at times certainly.
Again i point to the Barrera Marquez fight, and the fact that Lampley failed to announce several clean shots Marquez landed and failed highlight that prior to the knockdown in round 7 Barrera was out on his feet and in danger of getting knocked out.
Then there is the obvious agenda towards degrading certain fighters achievements, of course he doesnt have to be impartial, but he is tasteless in the extreme.

Who ISN'T Biased?? Everyone is even if its just a little bit. And do you buy PPVs To listen to Larry or Jim talk??..NO!. I like the old man. Some of you are just butt hurt the man was real blunt in an interview with their favorite fighter or doesn't see things the way you do.. For example Floyd fans after the Baldy fight started crying about Merchant.. These dudes get hired to commentate and state their opinions, not to try and make the world happy. I say Merchant is a G.. and has been there ever since I can remember and SHOULD stay!

Instead of guest appearances by foreman, they should have foreman replace larry. Not Kellerman. Or do you think foreman would want too much, or do you think he thinks it would take too much time of his life to be at almost all of hbo's boxing events? I don't know whos cheaper for the part foreman or lewis, personally i like foreman as a commentor better since he isn't biased. I love foreman when he was announcing for the lewis/klits fight, he kept saying that klits is fighting the fight of his life and he's winning. He told the truth, he wasn't picking anyone because of their skin tone. He's a good guy
I liked when George and Larry used to go back in forth with each other. One thing about Larry he never backs down and states his opinion.

They need to replace lennox with kellerman larry should stay.
but showtime is also biased. just watch the corrales vs clottey fight.
i dont know the commentator's name but he was all over corrales's nuts the whole fight even though corrales was getting the beat-down of his life.
in the ninth round he said "Corrales COULD be losing this fight!!!" well no fucking shit he hasnt won a single fucking round
LOL
They've got an affinity for him after the Castillo fight innit

I see what you mean, but I didn't find him totally understandable at times. He'd come up with random stuff. He sure shows more passion that Steward, but Steward's analysis is a little better in my opinion. I thought Roy Jones, JR. was better than all of them.
I hope this is false. I've always liked Max ever since FNF but there's no one like Larry. HBO Boxing won't be the same with out him. I don't think Kellerman has the balls to ask the questions Larry asked. Merchant doesn't give a fuck who's standing in front of him...LOL
LARRY MUST STAY!!!
Well said. :beerchug:
I hope this doesn't turn out to be true..
