On ESPN Classic's: Who's #1? The most overrated sports figures, Oscar De La Hoya was rated #17.
Do you guys think that DLH is over rated? I do not think he is overrated, he's great, but not Leonard GREAT. Sure he'll be in the boxing HOF, but you can't put him in all-time great list.
Here is some of Oscar's accomplishments
* 1992 Olympic Gold medalist
* He is the only fighter in the history of boxing to win world titles in six weight classes (Super Featherweight, Lightweight, Jr-Welterweight, Welterweight, Super Welterweight & Middleweight)
* Won World titles 9 times.
I am probably one of the biggest DLH hater you will ever meet. But the guy has some good quality wins imo. He is slightly overrated, but he has helped boxing tremendously. I always wished he would have stayed at a weight long enough to establish himself as a ATG. 140 for instance. I will say his titles at jr.light and Middleweight were bogus. He was never the true champ at those weights with that WBO garbage.
because he stole you bitchez :D:tapedshut
alot of the old timer fighters are overrated...ones that have sketchy records ... like these boxing writers who always harp on about some guy from 1890 who was the best ever!
I think alot of these old timers would have got dispatched against fighters like pbf,hopkins or calzaghe.
The 6 division thing must be taken into context. Fighters nowadays have way more titles to choose from, and the weigh-in rules are different. You can weigh in a day before rather than the day of the fight, making it easier to fight in MORE weight classes. De La Hoya only actually made 130 two times. Two of his belts were the WBO belts, against Jimmy Bredahl at 130 and Felix Sturm (disputed decision) at 160.
DLH was/is still a great fighter, but some things must be taken into context.
i don't think de la hoya is overrated...don't really like him too much but he does the damn thang...and it's funny how pretty boy floyd is your second most hated fighter ....and he beat two of your favorites and come may it's about to be 3

THEN 4 SURE HE IS NOT OVERRATED !!! IN MY BOOK I HAVE HIM AS THE BEST BOXING FIGHTER IN THE HISTORY OF BOXING !
Much like Tyson and Ali,he may be a little overrated by sports fans who only watch boxing once in a great while.They hear oscar's name much more than they hear about someone like Mayweather,Wright,Hopkins ETC.So they may assume that Oscar's a "true" ATG.Based on his crossover appeal...Oscar is a very good fighter,who's ranked just where he should be by true boxing fans.
