Williams to fight onBritish heavyweight champion Danny Williams has resisted the lure of retirement and insists he will fight on in a bid to muscle his way back onto the big stage at the age of 33.
Williams intimated after his ninth round knockout win over Scott Gammer in Neath last Friday night that he was sorely tempted to call time on his career and go out on a high.
But now the former world title challenger and conqueror of Mike Tyson has come to the conclusion he has more left to give and will target a shot at reigning European champion Vladimir Virchis.
Williams told PA Sport: "I have had so much positive feedback from people who said I boxed very well and showed glimpses of world class although I did lose concentration at times.
"I know there is a lot to work on but I went into this fight off two losses so my confidence couldn't have been that good. Once I have got that back I believe my next performance will be 250% better.
"My main goal is to get back to the top. I believe I can still compete with champions like Oleg Maskaev. But first I am looking at the next step which hopefully will be the European title."
Williams is adamant he will not be tempted to re-enter the seemingly endless jostle for domestic supremacy, and has ruled out a third meeting with Audley Harrison.
He added: "I definitely do not want to get back involved in all that although I would fight Matt Skelton again if it could get me the Commonwealth title. Now I only want to fight people who can give me something, not the other way round."
Williams has never been afraid of resurrecting his career the hard way, not least in the two low-key undercard victories he chiselled out in order to earn his momentous night against Tyson.
And he believes that is what sets him apart from the likes of Harrison, who will continue his career and has intimated he would interested in a third meeting with Williams.
Williams added: "I've been down so many times and I know what it takes to get back to the top.
"I've fought on undercards and I am happy to do it again if that is what it takes to get me back to the top."

Whatever Danny chooses to do, I support the brother 100%. If he feels he has more to give, then I'm sure he has. If he can keep his weight down and his concentration levels up, he can be a force on the European scene. He also has the power to KO some of the American HW's, but I feel he might have more concentration lapses. For sure I believe he can beat Maskaev and I'd back him (in 100% form anyway) against Valuev too. Please Danny, don't let us down mate.
Danny the champion of the world 2008!!!!!!!!
I think Ricky Hatton's trainers would do Danny a world of good. They know how to get their man into amazing physical, mental and boxing shape. They'd do wonders for Danny.
Jimmy McDonnel wasn't that good of a trainer. His philosophy was 'the bigger you are the better you are'. It was McDonnell who ADVISED him to put on 25lbs and baloon to 288lbs for Skelton II. WTF???? A light trim Danny with his head right is the best British out there. If you've ever seen Danny's early fights, he was very very very good; crisp jab and head jolting power in both hands. Plus he could put his punches together in combos very very adeptly. He was really very good. I think on his night, right frame of mind, good physical condition, he'd beat Maskaev (of that I'm 95% certain), a good chance against Valuev and he also has the power to overcome Briggs (who's punch resistance isn't that great and he's also less mobile than Danny too). Only Sugar Wladdy would beat him comprehensively but he could too be KO'd if Danny landed a few to those frail whiskers (but I doubt that would ever happen).
good luck to him but i believe he'll struggle mentally.........if he had that right, he'd be a force!..
it just shows how much you need your head in boxing..
