this fight should have been stopped much earlier...

A good fight all the same.
It depends on the commission which provides the rules. Under the Unified rules only the ref can stop the fight. I believe that this is the case under Nevada State rules too.
Yes, a ref can consult with the doctor before stopping the fight and the doctor can ask the ref to stop the fight but it's the referee's decision.
Can only the Ref stop the fight?
hahaha i will agree to disagree. I think alot of refs in the UK kinda run with the crowd. I mean they do (the crowd) get very envolved in the fights and i think it can sway both refs and commentators.
haha i can't help myself in winding up the brits, as i said i was originally from the UK and now live in australia, so it kinda comes second nature, the difference between brits and alot of other countries though is the fact they can take a wind up and laugh at themselves. But... dude... it was a body shot :boxing:
its pretty typical to have these type of calls in the UK, kinda like when kostya dropped hatton with a body shot.
That was clearly a low blow, not a body shot.

It's hard to get a win in the UK sometimes. I think Mickey Van wanted to start throwing punches for Earl, but knew that would be taking it a bit too far.
Refs dont stop fights if "the towel" is thrown in. This is incase a member of the audience decides it would be fun to throw a towel of their own in the ring. If a corner wants the fight stopped, they get in the ring and tell the ref that they are stopping the fight.
I never really thought about that, but it's pretty obvious.
Earl took one hell of a beating in that fight but at the time of the stoppage he was actually doing quite well and landing good shots on katsidis. I know the rule over here is the towel is not an automatic fight stopper but i believe it should be. If the corner want him out then the ref should not disregard their wish.

BUT HOPEFULLY ON A DOCTOR'S ADVICE AS WELL.

Yeah I watched this and whilst only the Ref can stop the fight, the corner are there to represent the fighter when he's not in much of a position to make the decision himself.
And from watchin the whole fight, Vann was horrendously biased towards Earl, giving him precious seconds after knockdowns to recover, cautoning Katsidis for non-existant low blows - I mean this guy is a go to guy for Warren, as a scorer and a ref.
I really liked Katsidis though, he's got some nice aggression and power, good stamina - question marks over his chin though.
This is what I'm talking about. A bad ref job all over.
It wasn't in the rules to let the corner throw in the towel I believe. The guy came back and put the other guy down so it wasn't that bad. A lot of punishment went on there though, it just depends on the individual referee how much they think is too much. It's a very tough job I imagine.
I know in Texas in MMA fights you are told during the rules meeting to NOT throw in the towel. You are told you can jump up on the apron area or hit the cage and get the refs attention and he will stop it.
You're welcome ;)
The referee maybe should have stopped the fight but from his bantage point he could tell that Earl wasn't in a particular amount of trouble, and his opinion was justified seconds later when Earl knocked Katsidis on his arse. Of course the ref took quite a risk in letting the fight continue because if Earl had been seriously hurt then there would be questions asked about his fitness as a referee. I think he did the fighter a favour in this instance. Mickey Vann is an experienced referee and a big figure in British boxing. Just as soccer referee Pierluigi Collina's experience and ability allows him to take liberties with his role, Mickey Vann did the same thing in Earl vs Katsidis.
Mickey Vann is a fucking idiot
Yep only the ref can stop the fight because that towel could have been thrown by a spectator in the crowd. The ref thought Earl was still defending himself and throwing punches back at katsidis. Earl might have been eating leather but he was ok in the opinion of the ref. So that is why he threw the towel away.

I saw the ref throw the towel out of the ring in one of Hopkins early fights. It seems kind of stupid to me. Only the ref can stop the fight, but if some fighter is way out of it, and the corner wants it stopped, the ref should do them that favour.
I agree. This fight went on too long.
