Tua turned down Lamon Brewster for his May 19th fight, preferring to stay busy with confidence building fights. Tua is coming off of a pedestrian decision win over Robert Hawkins. Lamon Brewster hasn't fought since 2006's hell and back loss to Sergei Lyakhovich in which he suffered a detached retina.
Paul, don't you think that it's time for Tua to take some risk and 'step up' against some decent competition? Maybe the reason why he's looked so dismal in his comeback fights is that he isn't compelled to train hard and to dedicate himself as if he was fighting a formitable opponent. I mean how many tune-up fights does he need? Its time to fight a real opponent and step up the game.
These opponents he's facing are not doing anything for him apart from giving him a few rounds. In a couple of the fights he looked to be just carrying his opponents; but he's not even looking good in doing so. He's a long way away from the Ruiz, Ike and Sullivan fights. I think he should take a couple of fights with fighters just outside the top 15 and take it from there. Someone mentioned his weight; he's managed to get that down a bit, which seems to be the only positive thing at the moment.

I agree with this somewhat. Tua does need to move up and take more risk but it needs to be a calculated risk because if he moves up and loses badly then he is finished. Its a tough call for him and his team. He needs to lose another 20 pounds to start with.
He has always lacked some fundamentals which has been the reason he has struggled against the likes of Lewis, Byrd and Rahman among others, but people who say he never was anything and never beat anyone is talking nonsense; he's beaten four current or former world heavyweight champions; was involved in two fights which were among the biggest punch output in heavyweight history, and no one except Ike, ever dared to stand toe to toe with him and if they did they didn't survive.
He has however, been absolutely garbage in his comeback fights, there's no disputing that.

Is Brewster looking for opponents? I think him and Liakhovich should fight a re-match, Liakhovich needs to get back in the ring and Brewster needs to avenge his loss.
This makes perfect sense, but unfortunately Don King is no longer Brewster's promoter (what, did I just write that?!?), so making a fight between the two wouldn't be easy.
But it'd be a great co-feature for any Showtime or HBO broadcast, or maybe a FNF main event (wishful thinking, I know).
Expect Brewster to take on one of the heavyweight challenger retreads like Dominic Guinn, Jameel McCline, Owen Beck or Monte Barrett in his first fight back. Those guys won't go away.
why dont we make a thread about someone that matters, not fat ass dodge every legitimate opponent in the world David "LazyMan" Tua
as far as im concerned david tua is a step below tye fields right now and a step above butterbean......... he never won a title when he actually gave a shit and he sure as hell is NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVEr going to win one NOW GODDAMMITTT
i kind of feel that way also
he never won a title when he actually gave a shit

evander holyfield would beat david tua
lamon brewster would probably give him brain damage
evander is so over the hill now I wouldnt be in total shock if he even loses to maddalone. brewster may already have brain damage himself considering all the hard shots he's eaten over his last several fights ( excluding golota). tua is a shell of himself and so one dimensional its sickening but he still has a 50/50 shot at brewster and would stop evander
tua is round garbage.... looked like ass his past few fights.... lamon tko mid rounds..
well,,,lamon is very up and down himself. he's lost to shufford ,,entienne,,,should have got the loss against meehan and was beaten by serge who was trounced by none other than briggs and mo harris. brewster has dynamite heart and good power but he's also very beatable and I think this match with tua would be a toss up

smart move by tua. not that i dont think tua isnt capable of beating brewster but he needs to get back into the bigtime scene slowly just like shannon briggs did
yep, that's what killed tyson too, bringing him back to the bigger fights quick, some guys need a building process in order to get everything back.
i think it's a responsible move, only as long as he keeps uping the competition and stays active by fighting ever few months. no less than 5 fights in the year.
IMO, if Tua was to beat Brewster, I think he gets a shot at a title his next fight. This fight would end devastatingly though, and one fighter wouldn't be the same after. Huge hooks being landed. Somebody sitting on the ropes. You get the idea. Morrison and Mercer.
It's a wise decision by Tua and his people. Tua has looked very bad in his recent fights and would probably lose to most of the top 15 at this point. The one plus point is that he seems to be getting his weight down. It's hard to say if he can improve much, I think he can.
It's sad because Tua in his prime, or pre 2003, would beat most of these guys and have a shot at Klitschko.
Tua's been on the comeback trail since 2005 and has fought limited competition at best. IMO, it's time for the Tuaman to take some risk and 'step-up' his game against someone like Brewster. I believe sometimes fighting good competition brings the best out in a fighter. If he doesn't step up now then when will he ever?

Seems like Tua's been turning down(ducking?) alot of potential opponents lately... First it was fellow New Zealander Shane Cameroon and now Lamon Brewster. IMO, Tua should've took this fight because Lamon's coming off of a long layoff, injury, and tough defeat in his last fight. And Tua has got to step up his competition sooner or later or he's gonna be fighting club fighters for the rest of this career! His refusal of this fight, to me, means that he lacks confidence in his ability to fight a top notch opponent and win.
brewster doesnt fight like that though.... it would be a war with tua coming out on top cause he's more durable...
I agree for the most part,,,,but tua has really slipped over the years. brewster is far from a good boxer but even he may be able to out point tua who made rahman look like ali in there 2 fights
