Willie Pep was around at the same time.
different weight class, dude you know that the guys leonard and charles beat are better. Turpin, olson, zivic, graziano, angott and lamotta are 2nd ballot hall of famers, you know thay arent true elites. For god's sakes, lamotta was 17 pounds heavier than robinson when he beat him by a split decision. Whenever they fought at the same weight, lamotta would lose, therefore implying that his win was a fluke.
I dont include henry armstrong in my top 5 pound for pound, this may sound cold. But, if you actually do a great depth of research on his opponents, rather than believing " the three belts at the same time" hype. You would realize that he only beat 1 great fighter, thats it.
Ezzard charles was a natural middleweight that went up to heavyweight and won the belt. The 160 and 175 champs wouldnt give him a title shot. He has beat 3 guys on the ring's 80 best of the last 80 years, henry armstrong beat 1 guy on that list, you do the math.
The only reason people are saying its robinson is cuz ali said it. The guy really didnt even fight many black people to be honest. During leonard's era, there were other guys like him. When robinson was around, he was the ahead of his times, there was no one that was slick like him. Robinson wouldnt fight burley and ezzard, he knew he would get his ass kicked. So he decided to stick with his original plan and fight italians over and over again.
When leonard says robinson is better than him, he's being modest. The guys leonard beat like hagler, hearns, duran, benitez and kalule are held in a higher regard than lamotta, gavilan, basilio, fullmer and an aging featherweight.
"Someone once said there was a comparison between Sugar Ray Leonard and Sugar Ray Robinson. Believe me, there's no comparison. Sugar Ray Robinson was the greatest."
-- Sugar Ray Leonard
you mean losing to Turpin, Giardello, Maxim, Fulmer, and Basilio?
Did you know that Turpin fought an opponent that Marcino faced?
Name: Don Cockell. Turpin knocked him out first, by way of KO 11.
Marciano would later beat Cockell down, with a 9 round KO.
Still, considering Turpin won by KO too, fought him before Marciano, and it took the Rock 9 rounds, only two rounds prior to Turpin's, that says something.
Marciano stated, "He's got a lot of guts. I don't think I ever hit anyone else any more often or harder." referring to Cockell.

Lets not forget that Ray would fight Turpin again, and win Knock Turpin out.
"Sugar was 85-0 as an amateur and 69 of those victories came by knock out or TKO"
http://en.wikipedia.org
Ray was also a welterweight that moved up in weight to get fights.
The Majority of his losses were after his prime. When he came back to fight after retiring, he wasn't the same; age, to many fights, and Ring rust will do that.
SRR is the best ever. I will argue that to death with anybody. Look at his record and how he won. Not to mention the killers he beat out of his natural weight.

good video. I'd have to agree, but its always cool hearing the great fighters perspective.
Cause there is always debate among FANS who the best p4p fighter is, but among the great fighters, the decision seems unanimous
