where does he rank among the lightweights. Lets look at his resume at lightweight.
roger mayweather
greg haugen
louie lomelli
jose luis ramirez
freddie pendleton
azumah nelson
juan nazario
anthony jones
policarpo diaz
jorge paez
harold barzier
rafael pineda
On top of that, this is his resume during his 4 year reign as the welterwight king.
buddy mcgirt x2
julio cesar chavez
santos cordona
julio cesar vasquez
gary jacobs
jake rodriguez
wilfredo rivera x2
disoblay hurtado
Now i can see why Ring Magazine ranks him as the 10th best fighter to ever live. On top of that he was robbed against ramirez the first time and arguably beat a prime oscar de la hoya. His only real losses were his last two fights.
I dont know. Alot of people have Benny Leonard top 5 all time p4p he's one of those guys who's pretty golden when talking about there caeers. Moving up does affect your career but I dont really put to much on it.
Duran was never relly that great outside of 135 but its what he did while there that makes him such a legend I rank Duran #3 all time p4p.
Duran may be the best ever at that weight. Why isnt esteban de jesus in the hall of fame when you have guys like pipino cuevas in there. Duran has mad respect for De Jesus. I believe he dropped a prime duran twice, and he won the first time too.

Top 3 all time at 135 and top 10-15 all time p4p range.
I put Pete 3rd behind Duran and Leonard all time at 135, but its like OG said he was as good as anyone who had ever fought at that weight but that doesn't mean he had a better career than some guys at lightweight.
pound for pound is he better than leonard, cuz he was the #1 welterweight for 4 straight years. Even though i like chavez, pernell did show his superiority in thier fight.

A great boxing exhibition by whitaker, remember folks greg haugen was a very good fighter back in 86-92. Whitaker takes him to school.
I dont say he sucks, he's just overrated to a certain extent. I use more logic than him, its quite clear. He picks dempsey to beat up liston and foreman, i'm sure you laugh when you hear a typical achilles response.
To Achilles credit he has obviously done a good amount of research on his boxing history and knows what he's talking about in respect to non-modern era fighters. Whether he places too much emphasis on crediting those older fighters is a different thing. Hey, we all have our biases though. I have bias towards the fighters I grew up watching (Whitaker, Toney, Morales, etc) and I probably go over the top when talking about them from time to time.
brownpimp88, are you kid achilles secret twin or something?
he seems obsessed with how all of today's fighters suck ass and even today's top would lose to even the most obscure fighters of the past
you seem obsessed with how all of yesterday's fighters suck ass and would suck in today's divisions
cant the both of you see that
(1) modern training methods took place of the old ones for a reason, modern fighing skills techniques evolved for a reason
(2) larger talent pool and having lots of fights DO matter
btw, TO ME you seem more objective that he is.
although his mayweather sucks threads go unnoticed in the ocean of the similar ones, made by posters who hate on pbf for different reasons. your armstrong sucks thread stands by itself, it is unique

you have to remember that hank was fighting a lot of these welters weighing in lighter than 147. his fight with ambers in '38 was supposed to be amazing. both guys giving and taking, armstrong just swinging from all angles.
armstrong was more of a welterweight, he only defended his lightweight belt once. The prime whitaker from 87-91 would prolly beat everybody. When he went up to welterweight from 92-97, that was just for fun to see how he does in other weight classes. He showed mental toughness and heart against trinidad, while much bigger guys like vargas and joppy got knocked the fuck out.

in terms of their career at LW?
benny leonard, tony canzoneri, henry armstrong, carlos ortiz....some will tell you gans, and ike williams as well.
whitaker certainly had a great career at lightweight. i wouldn't say he had the greatEST LW career, but in terms of head 2 head matchups with those guys i'd favor him.
barney ross could have been a damned fine (well was a damned fine) lightweight if he could have controlled his weight.

yo besides duran, who can really have a claim to be a better lightweight than pernell.

his lightweight resume is awesome. He could have fought rosario and gomez, but he beat the guys that beat them, layne and nazario. His legacy from 86-96 will live on forever, we shouldnt remember the shit that he went threw from 97-2001.
drug abuse had already started eating away at his career.:(

whitaker is in my top 10 of all time. he also happens to be my favorite fighter ever. i would favor him over any lightweight throughout history at his best, but this doesn't mean he had a "greater" lightweight career than some of those guys.
a beautiful style matchup would be duran/whitaker at 135. relentless pressure/punching and excellent skill vs. incredible movement/defense and excellent skill.
I remember floyd said in an interview a while back that pernell is the greatest pound for pound fighter of all times. He disses the shit out of ray leonard and praises whitaker, now thats awesome. Well maybe its cuz pernell beat up his trainer, lol.
