...yet still could knock someone out with one of those punches?
The only that comes to mind is young George Foreman.
I think that is a testament to how devastating he really was. He is the only one I can think of who really swung absurdly wide amateur arm punches and still knocked people out.
Mayorga gets a mention too but I wouldn't say he really had one punch knockout power like that...
Cooney wasn't a looping puncher. His left hook was pretty locked up, & was at it's most powerful when thrown resembling a half-hook, half-uppercut.
His right hand.....was non-descript & powerless.
Benn was not an arm puncher at all.
Gerry Cooney, Max Baer, Samuel Peter are similar punching fighters to Foreman.
Foreman was not unique, but he was a rarity. Few men possessed the kind of natural strength and heavy handedness to be effective with this style.
Glad you brought this up and mentioned George Foreman. Another that has been talked about his looping punchs and who also can ko sombody is Antonio Margarito.
edit; just remembering Calzaghe throws some looping punching too. Ponce De Leon.
yeah and you seen what happened to foreman when he fought a faster ali throwing straight shots down the pipe, the same thing would happen if marg and floyd fought so don't get too comfortable with marg throwing those wide looping punches you seen what happened when clottey was throwing those straight punches down the middle and tagging the shit out of your boy.
there is often alot of power in these wide looping haymakers but the problem isn;t power, no half decent boxer will let you land these unless you throw as many-with the same power-as foreman did!
Has noone mentioned McClellan yet? If I remember right he telegraphed nearly all his shots.
His money punch (right hand) was straight down the pipe though.
Kermit Cintron may be another wide free swinger with some pop.
Some of Benn's punches were very wide and wild, when he got carried away. But mostly, he had excellent punching technique - nice, short, tight, snappy, crisp punches, and under Jimmy Tibbs his technique changed a little where he'd have his feet very firmly planted and hips locked, designed to make his punches even more solid (though not as concussive) while not wasting as much motion because he was fighting guys naturally bigger than him and needed lasting effect as well as needing to last. He didn't waste many shots at all under Tibbs (Galvano '92 through Giminez '94), was a complete fighting machine.
Right, that was my point. He could get wild at times as is evident in the McClellan fight but for the most part he threw very technically sound, crisp punches. When he came out against Watson in the first round he was throwing some of the most tight, coiled and snapping punches I've ever seen. He shouldnt be put anywhere near the punching category of a Mayorga or Margarito.

no, actually they did not. i think you are just throwing names out.
Limon's punches were wide and ugly as hell. But he could hurt you with them.
Just like Iran Barkley.
Sometimes he could shorten them up, or throw some nice double left hooks (like against Duran), but he often threw wide looping hooks.
Oh yeah that's right, Benn was a masterful boxer puncher that picked his shots and mostly threw straight punches right?
Nobody said all that. But for the most part Benn threw shorter, tighter punches than a Foreman or Margarito.
Many times. He wasn't a wide arm puncher.

I think I've seen enough of this thread. LOL.

Glad you brought this up and mentioned George

But Slappy don't got knockout power.

Marg too huh, interesting never thought about him...its my guess where the power for guys like that comes from. Because by all accounts, throwing wide arm punches forfeits almost all the knockout power of a punch.
Short, tight, snapping punches with your core and legs behind it is where the real power comes from and its rare to see people not throw punches that way and still KO peeps.
