i gotta say i'm still kind of a newbie when it comes to boxing history. i dont know much about past boxers but from what i see i dont understand why their considered so much greater than the boxers now. i mean dont you people think boxing has evolved over the years? its just natural for things to evolve and people to get better over time. do you guys think that since (i'm assuming) most of you guys have been boxing fans since you were young and grew up idolizing guys like sugar ray robinson and ali that your just biased to the boxers now? i mean like i said i'm still a new fan and when i watch boxing from like since sugar ray leonards time until now i'm more impressed with that era than the boxers way before. just my thoughts.
No, he wasn't.
Then again you would predict him to beat liston, foreman and frazier so i'm not gonna bother.
To me he was good in his time but wouldnt last in head to to head fights.
Willard was talented for sure, he just had a late start in boxing. Firpo is just the sort of awkward, aggressive, hard hitting opponent with a ton of balls that I'd be afraid of Wlad taking on, though I do think Tua smashes the Wild Bull of the Pampas.
Dempsey is important to boxing history cuz he was thier version of babe ruth, i get it. However, as a boxer he is vastly overrated.

Who did Lewis beat besides a washed up Tyson, a past prime Holy, and a completely shot Tony Tucker?
Holyfield was the linear champ at the time and lewis has beat 23 ranked contenders throughout his career. I'm positve klitchko and tua would beat firpo and untalented douche like willard.
Who did dempsey beat, sharkey, firpo and willard, lol. Lennox would jab him and tko his ass in the later rounds.
LMAO at people saying roy is overrated cuz he lost a couple of fights out of his prime. Roy is far more skilled than dempsey, better head movement and combos. Why do i get the feeling that all these dempsey nuthuggers are white.
Dempsey is one of the most overrated boxers of all times. The heavyweights he beat were unskilled goofs, his record is padded with bums that have horrible records. He never beat a great heavyweight, his best wins are sadly against light heavyweights and he got outboxed by tunney twice. Not to mention that he never fought black guys cuz his promoter wouldnt allow it.

How can you compare Dempsey to Roy? Dempsey was a natural 200 lber with an iron chin trained down to 185 whereas Roy was a natural 160 lber who used weights to bulk up. The difference in the quality of their chins and bone structures is ridiculous.
If there was alot of money offered in those days, they would fight less. Gavilan and ray robinson ended up broke while guys like leonard ended up with millions.
You said lennox barely makes ur top 20, so to me ur opinion is a joke.
same to u, your OPINION doesn't mean shit to me either
the new guys ( today ) are " great athletes" who duck everybody and barely fight 2 or 3 times a year. the champs of the past were fighting 2 or 3 times a month
the old guys are tougher and had more heart
old school = always better than new school
jack dempsey would knock out any of today's hw bums

I'm sorry, but I would have to agree with Kid Achilles on this one. Lennox is big, but he has a bad chin and is much slower than Dempsey. Dempsey's punches would have more of an effect on Lewis than Lewis' punches would on Dempsey. I would say Jack wins in under 8 rounds.

Dempsey would fuck Lennox up.
Lewis is far to big and strong for Dempsey. It is the heavyweight division of today that has the most problems when comparing it to the past. For example, it wouldn't have taken Frank Bruno four shots at the title if he was around now rather than then!
Wlad and Valuev would UD Marciano no problem, and yes Ive seen plenty of footage. He would probably be cruiserweight champion, but I think even at a cut 215 pounds his style wouldnt be effective at heavyweight. Im not trying to bash the guy, its just the size will be too hard to overcome.
For the Thread question, shit, do you really think fighter's of today are really that good?
Does anybody honestly think that Ray Robinson wouldn't handle these fighters at 147?
And for these "Heavyweights", man, these guys aren't that "great"...Lewis was really the last legit Heavyweight with skills...Wlad might be, but his stamina issue is really a concern.
Just look at Taylor, the guy doesn't seem to really have the stamina to go 12 rounds...fighters back then fought at the same pace, if not faster, and went 15.
Hagler would of ripped Taylor apart.
And NO, I am not one to say that athletes were better back then because it simply isn't true...it is just in boxing, it seems something is wrong...in other sports, yeah, they have gotten better.
Marciano loved working out and loved eating and could gain muscle like no one's business. The guy weighed over 200 in shape but dieted down and lost muscle to reach a weight he thought was best for a 15 round fight against similary conditioned opponents. Today someone would sit him down and and explain that he could afford to put on some weight, show him the right way to do it without losing speed, and send him gleefully off to the weight room. The guy loved working out and lifted weights early in his career, much to the frustration of his manager and trainer who forbid him from doing it.
The Rock would have no problem weighing a lean 210 lbs with weights. Roy Jones bulked up to a lean 190 lbs no problem and Marciano had a much bigger frame. 210-220 would be no problem at all. Hell the guy had to fight a battle in training just to try to stop from putting on muscle and weighing that much. If he made an effort to do it, he'd have no trouble at all.
In all honest, Marciano's frame is not that big...yeah, bigger than Jones, but he is not quite up there with Tyson, Liston, etc. {regarding fighters around his height}
Could Marciano weight 210 pounds in today's boxing, yeah, but who knows how it will effect his stamina...we see fighters get big, and then there stamina takes a hit...even Roy Jones Jr. in the Ruiz fight was having stamina problems.
And I said it many times before, if Marciano felt he could be effective coming in at 200 pounds, he would of...remember, there were no weight limits in Heavyweight division, and the reason he came in at 185, was because that was his fighting weight, meaning, that is where he felt comfortable, at least in those days.
It is not like there weren't heavyweights before him that weren't over 200 pounds, remember, Sam McVey was 210+, and right after Marciano, Liston was 210+
I think you forgot quickness, defense ,reflexes, and athletic ability all of which go to Roy sounded good tho, and Im sure you could argue skill but I could also argue that my dick is bigger than an elephants but we would both be wrong. I dont recall seeing Roy anywhere near winded BEFORE dropping back down to 175 so stamina I dont think would be an issue
Strength - Dempsey
Power - Dempsey
Speed - RJJ
Skill - Draw, I could even argue it for Dempsey.
Competition fought - Dempsey
Heart - Dempsey
Chin - Dempsey
Stamina - Dempsey
Killer Instinct - Dempsey
I could keep going, but I don't have to. Dempsey knocks him out.
not to mention rjj best weight was 168... and dempsey would be a bigger man than he actually was in the 20s, given today's training methods
The funniest thing about this argument is that most of the people who are arguing for the old time fighters have never seen anything more than a couple fights of terrible video footage, if that. There really is no point in comparing the different generations because there isn't any common ground to make a rational decision. But just to keep the arguement going, the fighters today would make easy work of the fighters from the distant past.
................................................... what?
you made a list of fighters who fight better than they talk.
I argue that mayweather does not belong, since charisma and rethoric are far below his fistic abilities.
he is unbeaten in the ring, but he says mostly things that piss ppl off whenever he opens his mouth.
dont you agree?
