Anybody see this on ESPN?
Pretty good.
It makes me wonder though, if Ali wouldn't have had the exile, how he would of looked against who he faced afterwards: He was just coming into his "Man Strenght/Physique" right before his exile, so....
What are all the facts involved with him not going to War/fighting for the Government/country?
I am not sure, so I will have to fact check, unless somebody corrects it which would be good, but I think:
(1) He was actually 1 year over the draft limit age by the time they drafted him...this is what I heard anyway
(2) He failed the test to get into the military 2-3 times, and never passed, they just passed him...which set off a red-alarm because it basically showed that the Government rigged the draft; they wanted Ali's name to support the War like Joe Louis had for WWII...the only difference, WWII was a legit war going in and there wasn't much debate about if there should be any protest.
(3) Ali wouldn't have had to actually "Serve", in terms of fighting in battle...he was offered to do exhibition bouts and boost moral...the Government came to him and said this.
(4) The War: should we have been there? maybe, maybe not...It was supposed to stop the spread of "Communism", so OK, fair enough...the only problem, it seems there was some other crap going on why we were there.
Remember, most often when a War is started or entered, it is for the benefit of Rich people...what are we protected? Rich people's money.
When people are "Drafted", I wouldn't be surprised if all the numbers called, are from blue-collar and poor-classes...they probably just go by area-code.
Even in WWII, the United States made out pretty well...You don't enter a war if you are going to lose more than you win.
(5) Ali's refusal because of racisim in America...he wasn't sure why he was supposed to fight in a War against people he had never met and saw as a non-threat to him.
Remember, the "Government" works for us, not the other way around...it is "Our" job to question...especially if you are a citizen and the Government is sending your troops/your brothers and sisters off to war, you better demand the details...if you don't, you let down the "Idea" of "America" and you let down the troops that are willing to fight for the country.
Ali could have been right or wrong, it really doesn't matter, he had the right to refuse based on being an "American (U.S.A.)" alone.
what would you call it? my uncle did two tours in nam, you think he wanted to? hell no, but guess what? he did what he had to do. people in this country want all the benefits but none of the sacrifice, the USA wouldn't be what it is without the real men who were willing and able to fight for it. enough said
I am a veteran and did 1 tour in afgahn territory before my departure, and i applaud ALI for doing what he wanted to do, and not what hes forced to do, over an unjust war for an unjust cause.
Everything Ali said in the press was to hype the fight. He was not really like that you should know this. I read a biography of Dick Shcaap, who was a great friend of Ali's from his Olympic days and he describes Ali as a very nice person. When he dodged the draft he did what a lot of people were scared to do and he spent time in jail for it.
I am pretty sure Ali never set foot in jail
im sick of ali, Joe Frazier is an example of a real man. he came from shit, and was always humble, ali's bullshit caused much heartache to the frazier family , from joe to his kids, they all suffered because of ali's so called self promotion. the real hero and man is joe frazier. they had one fight when the they were in they were both in their primes, and smokin joe defeated ali. ali hurt more people than he ever helped. dispute that!!!
ali in his prime after a 3 years layoff?
keep on dreaming...
(yes ali was an asshole to frazier, I agree 100% on it)

again
ali would have had to fight exhibitions.
and yes you are right, a few ppl who never saw a battlefield, except in "the guns of navarone" would me much less wealthy without the "real men".

franlkly im tired of ali, he made persecuted men of his own race, he dodged the draft cause he was a coward, and then made excuses, he called joe frazier a gorilla which is a racial epithat. he hated his own race, he used his fame as a platform to act like an asshole, basically he was pussy.
Ali is a legend in sports and a world wide icon.

That was just shit talking at its best...Thats why its Ali's Rap...no harm was inteaded...I dont blame him for not going to war at all...The military is full of shit when it come to war...They kill women & children when they are only hunting for 1 man...but anyway...Ali hated no one...people hate whats great and he was great...you know similar to Pretty Boy..Racist...you crazy playa

I don't blame him for not going to Vietnam, but the racist shit, yeah, that was really fucked up.

he must have been terrified of fighting exhibitions for troops, right?
he called joe frazier a gorilla which is a racial epithat.
I thought that was hilarious when he has a big, stuffed gorilla in the ring and was beating on it. "Come on gorilla!" And when he held up the little gorilla and hit it in the head, I crack up everytime. I guess it would be different if he was white, but he isn't and he apologized sincerely for it many times; so we can all look back and laugh.:cop:
