Taylor-Ouma undercard. From fightnews.com: Super lightweight Emanuel Augustus (35-28-6, 19 KOs) pitched a ten round shutout against Russell Stoner Jones (19-16, 14 KOs). Augustus won by scores of 100-89, 100-89, 100-90 to claim the WBC Continental Americas super lightweight championship. After the fight, Augustus stated, "I'd like to fight the best fighters out there," Augustus said. "I'm an HBO fighter and a very entertaining fighter. I've had some tough breaks along the way but now things are starting to come my way."
Yeah, not like its a huge deal, and he was fighting a can. But really, if you are Augustus any win, any kind of title, at this point in his career is a good thing. Those of us with a soft spot for the eccentric journeyman can at least be glad he didnt fuck this one up (or get fucked).
This is something I find difficult to understand, and otherwise rational boxing fan thinking AUgustus has a shot against Hatton, it just doesn't make sense.
Augustus wouldn't have to worry about the quality of the judges in any undeserved fight with Hatton. Hatton would give him a brutally one sided beatdown. Witter and M'Baye would beat Augustus as well. They're both fast and quite powerful.
The sad thing is, Augustus has talent, but wasted it years ago. Given some proper guidance he could have done well. Now he is a journeyman, a dangerous enough journeyman for sure, but not someone who deserves a title shot.
I've been watching Augustus for years now. He's my second favorite fighter right now (after Cotto) but I look at boxing with unbiased eyes.
If Augustus has time to train (a normal 6-8 week camp), I think he would be a 3-2 dog against Hatton (meaning he'd lose 3 of 5 fights). Those are very good odds.
You must know that Augustus has made a career of taking fights with less than one week notice. He also used to smoke pot ALL the time and was thus not prepared for many of his fights. A well-trained Augustus is top 3 at 140 pounds. I think he's actually #2.
as you can see i am a big fan of the e-man. but i am also not biased. emanuel is a very skilled boxer that has been robbed alot. not to say that he has lost fairly. did u ever see the alex trujillo, emanuel schooled him so bad he never fought again. and if im not mistaken alex was in the top 10 at the time, while emanuel was unranked.
emanuel still has it and if it wasnt for his horrible record he would be fighting the top fighters right now. i really hope he gets another title shot but as far as fighting fighters like ricky hatton i doubt he can win, but who knows
Because boxing hangs on to all of these old guys and gives the new guys barely any press. The main reason the sport has not grown any bigger in the last couple of years. Barely any new stars were made in the last 5-years or even longer.
Mayweather, Pacquiao, Taylor, Hatton and Cotto.
but the fans love to see augustus, just like they love gatti, another "old guy". it's about fucking time augustus got a strap, even though today's alphabet soup belts are worth fuck all.
i love to watch augustus, when he does the "puppet stuff" and still schools and humiliates the other guy he's in the ring with
'Fans" reaction to Augustus record also illustrates a sad part of the sport.
Augustus has some robberies, yeah, but he's got legit losses too where he was simply outclassed. I admit that. But, and this is the truly important point, a lot of his losses are because he had no choice but to fight, taking a matches on short notice (thus the weed piss bust for instance), underprepared, sick, whatever, but needing a paycheck so he couldnt turn the fight down.
Not every guy out there is Sugar Ray Leonard or Jermaine Taylor, coddled and carefully matched their entire career from the get-go. Sometimes losses arent just a result of being a subpar fighter, its a matter of not being cradled and carried at the right time by handlers. In Augustus case, there is a bit of that in his performance record.

I didn't see the Augustus fight, did he do his thing?
I still thinks this guy gets too much press. 28 losses? While a lot of prospect get no press at all. A big thing that's wrong with the sport.
Hes MUCH more entertaining then the prospects.
Hes got a MUCH better personality.
Hes a cocky guy that sells tickets
Hes fought hard for his shot, he deserves a bigger name at 140
if augustus gets a fair shake from the ref and the judges he has a good chance at beating some of the top ten contenders at 140.
no favortism and no bias judgement for or against his style of fighting and let the punch stats and effective game plan be the judge and i think that you'll see augustus get more wins.
as for augustus beating the cream of the crop at 140, thats a different story, i wouldn't say he gets beat or beats anyone, but one thing that is for sure if he were to fight anyone of the best at 140 he'd give them fitz and the fights would be entertaining to say the least................
and another thought one augustus getting a title shot, he's gotta beat the guys that are ahead of him, plain and simple, go through the shit and climb your way up.
Aug. is a funny dude..He is indeed a very exciting fighter...he is the comedian of boxing..even if he is getting his a$$ whooped he is still putting on a show...But he does get too much TV rep...He has more loses that all the champions combined...all divisions....
There's that "looks are deceiving" saying and it also applies to some boxing records. Augustus is very skilled, entertaining, and has been in may tough and good fights. Go ask Mayweather about this guy's will and awkwardness. Augustus is not elite, but certainly not a bum. There's a reason why he keeps getting fights and recognition even with that bad record.
I never saw that fight. I take it Mayweather won.
I expect more from you.
ANY true boxing fan knows that there is much more to Augustus than his record. He's been robbed more times than a Korean market in South Compton. Augustus has the skills to pay the bills.
There are so many Augustus fights that he should've won but were instead awarded to the other guy. Anyone remember the first Courtney Burton fight? Augustus got a point taken away from him for spinning around, for Christ's sake! What about the Micky Ward fight a few years back? That was the Ring Mag fight of the year and it was given to Ward as a home-town decision.
Listen, Augustus is probably the second best fighter at 140 right now, right after Ricky Hatton. I even think Ricky would have a serious chance at losing a fairly-judged match against Augustus, especially in the U.S.
Augustus is getting old, tho, so he needs to get some good fights in soon.

did you just look up his record on boxrec? you mean you don't know about how much he has gotten screwed?
augustus is a damn fine boxer. everyone from teddy atlas to al bernstein know about emanuel and the bullshit he's been through. i believe it was one of them who said augustus should have no more than 4 or 5 losses on his record. and having tracked down and watched many of his fights, including an amazing number of bullshit losses to hometown fighters, i agree.
you should really try to watch some of his fights before you dismiss him. from the way you posted, i seriously doubt that you have seen more than 3 of his fights.
Augustus has been robbed 14 or 15 times, which still makes him a 13 or 14 loss fighter.
Lets be serious.
Any legit champ at 140 would have had Jones out of there in 2 rounds max.
I dont think he could touch any of the champs today.
