How come it is alright to say Willie Pep is a "Master" at defense, that it was "Art", but when it comes to Floyd Mayweather Jr., he is garbage, a scared punk, has no heart, etc. ?
Willie Pep piece from Youtube, watch what the people say
Pep he looked like a novice compared to amateurs in the 70s-90s
These are the proof here
look how much more advanced Floyd is in amateur angles/tech/fluidity/defense/timing

I know PBF is a better boxer than Gatti, its proven in their fight. But Floyd wonders why ppl dont liek him like they do a Gatti or Pep, that is why.
When Floyd breaks his hand he takes a knee, when Gatti breaks his hand he he hits you with it!!!
Buddy, dont kid yourself. Your gonna sit there and tell Pep couldnt pick up a BS alphabet title that we have today. Also the different amount of weight classes that there are today, there are twice as many divisions as there were when Pep fought. Being a world champ when Pep was boxing actually meant something. They say PBF is 4 time champ in as many weightclasses in actuality he is a 2 time champ.
And
Chico cant carry the jock of a Sandler or half of the opponets Pep fought, beat or KO'd.
Actually Floyd didn't take a knee.
When Floyd broke his right hand in the fight, he winced in pain and his glove just so happen to touch the canvass. He still threw his right hand later on in the fight.
To say that Mayweather has no heart, please see:
Mayweather vs Augustus
Mayweather vs Chavez
Mayweather vs Castillo (him winning or losing the fight which is up to debate is irrelevant. He fought a hard fought fight with Castillo basically grabbing him and throwing him around the ring, and yet he still sat down and traded with Castillo at times despite fighting with one arm)
Floyd is far from garbage. Because of personal standards, I won't mention him alongside Pep yet, or even a Pernell Whitaker; but that's because I don't rank active fighters with the all-timers....I wait until their career is over.
People don't like Floyd, I think, because of his mouth. You can't deny how good he was at 130: Hernandez, Manfreddy, Corrales, Chavez.....I mean, that's a damn fine list of opponents!
At 135, he had to fight Castillo twice to really beat him; and that was his only real significant lightweight fight.
At 140, he stopped a long-past-his-best Arturo Gatti....that's it. Ricky Hatton was the best Jr. Welterweight because he beat Tszyu and Floyd never proved he was the best at Jr. Welter, so Hatton gets the nod.
Now, at 147, you really can't complain too much about his progress. He's beaten a former undisputed champ in Judah and easily decisioned the reigning champ, Carlos Baldomir. And there are several interesting match-ups at this weight for a former junior lightweight: Margarito, Williams, Mosley, Cotto, Collazo, and who knows who else is out there.
If Floyd's smart, once the De La Hoya fight is over, he'll come back down to 147. Right now his speed and skill serve him well; but he'll slow with time, just as Whitaker did and 154 is a dangerous place for a slow former jr lightweight with no power to make note of.
Floyd is anything but garbage...of course, I know the hypocrisy was Abe's point....and it is a good one. If Floyd continues fighting and beating the best, even if his wins are boring, serious consideration has to be taken as too his all-time placement, regardless of how much he runs his mouth.
Good post.
No one thinks Floyd is garbage. Who does not admit that he's the best fighter today? However to even consider a guy who is merely the best guy in the world Novemver 15, 2006 as one of the best of ALL time is just ridiculous. As K-Dogg said, wait till he retires. If he wants to retire now, I can tell you right now he isn't cracking the top ten P4P.
It's not that he's garbage but compared to the accomplishments of Pep, he just isn't that impressive.
PS I'm not one of those people who thinks he should be ranked lower for fighting defensively. What will get him in the end is not enough fights vs. quality competition. Baldomir is a solid welterweight and one of the weaker welterweight champions, equal in talent to many dozens of guys Pep beat the crap out of on an almost routine basis.
I don't give a shit how he wins but he needs to win a lot more.
the reason people say that is because they are caught up in the past. they have no respect for fighters today and their accomplishments. just a past champ almost automatically guarentees you are better than a current day fighter.
some things should never be denied...like how SRR Robinson was the greatest boxer of all time. he simply was. but people often say 'oh, this fighter was so great compared to this present day one' and they barely have seen any of their full fights. i seriously doubt many people have seen all that many full fights of Willie Pep, theyre just pulling stuff out of their ass
also, about how Floyd 'doesnt face the best opposition', how the hell do you know that in the past they faced the best ever competition either? im sure when there were some title fights, people were arguing about who should have been the #1 challenger too, its just that nowadays theres so much spreading of opinions fighters get more ****

If so, it was only for the threat title, make sure to read the statements I make in the first post.
I find it funny that people say Floyd is this and that, but don't say the same about Pep, who danced around. When they talk about Pep, he is a boxing genius, a painter in the ring, etc.
For Floyd, he runs scared around the ring, he doesn't fight, he doesn't go toe to toe, etc.
You are right and I appologize. Is this better; "people calling Mayweather garbage is silly".

Floyd doesn't run, he dances around the ring. Running is what that French guy was doing when he fought Hopkins.
Floyd has knockouts, does he not? He stood in front of the majority of his opponents, which is why he has 24 knockouts in 37 fights. Baldomir is a big fighter, Floyd couldn't do that with him, especially with a hurt hand.
Running around is what Oscar did in the Tito fight towards the end. That's what you call getting on your bicycle
Floyd is a 3 time legitimate champ (130, 135, 147). And I am not saying that he is better than Tony Pep or that Pep should even be criticized. I am simply saying that Floyd catches criticism for things other fighters don't. For instance, people accuse Floyd of ducking Margarito (pretty much the only person anybody can claim Floyd "ducked") and there is still a good chance that they could fight. Yet nobody seems to criticize Sugar Ray Leonard for not fighting Aaron Pryor or waiting until Hagler was on the decline to schedule a fight with him. Again I am not criticizing SRL for that just pointing out the reality of boxing, historically and today.
or for really running in the hagler fight once he took it. SRL only fought like 1min each round at the end of the round, he stole the fight from Hagler off flurries
If you claim to be the best of all time, you damn well better not be afraid and produce a knockout against an opponent who is ready to go.
And Pep stood right in front of his opponents and fought with them many times.
Only thing with that is that Baldomir wasn't ready to go, when was the last time a real welterweight knocked him down? The guy's head looks and is built like brick. He ain't getting KOed unless it was to the body. Floyd didn't run in the fight, he was always right in front of him, he just wasn't punching as often in the later rounds. The fight wasn't that exciting, but I saw something beautiful in every round. Baldomir just wasn't good enough to get more out of him but strong enough to take the punishment all night if he had to.
Funny you ask this question and sign yourself, "Abe Attell". I see Pep mostly flat-footed, standing in front of the other guy or circling, not running, around. Anyway, does "2 - 3 fights a month", "sometimes 2 - 3 fights a week" mean anything to you? You are comparing a fighter with a poser.....

If you don't like PBF then that is fine to say. But, no way in hell are you qualified to label him as "garbage", making fighters look silly in the ring is not garbage. I am more of a fan of PEP's due to the fact that I like the old-timers more then the newer school of fighters.

In total agreement there, I was just simply pointing out the hypocricy with today's boxing. Floyd is very unlikeable and hence people want to discredit his accomplishments. I can think he is a pompous prick without letting it cloud my opinion of his boxing skills (which are vast).

I still don't see what is so special about Margarito that has everyone barking that floyd is ducking him.
