Ali Vs. Mayweather

Some of you guys seem to forget that Muhammed Ali was the most arrogant, cocky asshole that ever walked the face of the earth back when he was fighting. He gets praise now and is one of the most popular fighters in history, but a lot of people hated Ali. Why was he so damn cocky? Because he was the best. He knew it, the fans knew it and the other fighters knew it. Floyd Mayweather is one of the most arrogant, cocky assholes in boxing today. Why? because he is the best. He knows it, you know it and other fighters know it. Was Ali really an asshole? No, he turned out to be a great person and thats why everyone loves him. Is Mayweather really a bad person? Only his time after boxing will really allow his personality to really come out. Until then, he is a business. He runs his mouth to get publicity (think Margarito, Toney, Tarver, etc....), because no publicity is bad publicity (Terrell Owens, Ron Artest). The point I'm trying to make is that you guys should be appreciating the most talented fighter in the world because you don't know a damn thing about him personally. So many people claim to hate him because he is a "terrible" person, when they've never met him. Everyone gets on his case because he claims to be the best. What the hell do you want him to say? That he's the 4th or 5th best? All great fighters claim to be the best and really think they are. There is no way to compare these fighters so who the hell are you or me to say that he's not? Like I said, appreciate the great fighters while they're here because they don't come around very often. Hell we're comparing Floyd to Ray Robinson, Ray Leonard and Ali. That is damn good company, so obviously he is pretty damn good.

Don't get me wrong, I think Mayweather is a great talent, but you can't compare him to Muhammad Ali. Ali stood for so much when American society was in turmoil with the Vietnam War and the Civil Rights movement. Ali had charisma, charm, and a great personality. You can't compare them outside of the ring, and ,quite frankly, I don't think you can compare them inside the ring. If Mayweather can stamp his legacy and beat the likes of Margarito, Cotto, Hatton, and Spinks then you can start comparing.

The main difference between the two is personality. Ali was comical, harsh sometimes and mean; but always with a gleam of humor in his eyes. Some people can get away with being bodacious and outlandish, some can't. Ali came off as a mischievious kid on more occasions than not, playing with his critics in the media, whereas Mayweather comes off as an asshole. Some can do it, some can't. Floyd can't. That's the bottom line. amen to that. charisma is the key here.

I don't know the details of the alleged hitting of the waitress, so if you have details from the case, please put them up. Also, Athletes have bullshit charges brought up all the time because they have MONEY. When someone is hit by a boxer I want to see bruises...it makes me laugh when I hear women like Robin Givens say Tyson hit them, but they didn't bruise because "He is a boxer, he knows how to hit you without bruising":rolleyes: The problem is that people have the ability to lie for money, so if the person is really innocent, there will always be those that want/will believe he did it. If we were to believe every person that accuses an athlete of doing something wrong, Oscar would be sitting behind bars for rape. I remember once Tyson being asked whats the hardest he ever hit somone.. His repsonse.. Robin.. I hit her so hard she bounced off all 4 walls .. or something to THAT effect.. BAD example is all I am trying to say..

So far it seems the only 2 people talking bollocks on this thread are Mayweather 90 and thahorsman. Mayweather WAS convicted and given a suspended sentence for hitting a Las vegas nightclub waitress. The charges against him for hitting his girlfriend were dropped, but that was a different case altogether. Hatton did not ask for 13 million at the time of the Gatti fight, that was earlier this year. He is getting 6 million a fight for his 3 fight contract with HBO, then he has an option of a one off PPV event. The dollar is so weak that 13 mill is only about £7 million, which is nothing for a big fight. ali fought the best to back up his mouth, PBF has yet to do that... he hasnt fought anyone that stood even a remote chance of beating him in over 3 years... Floyd just fought and beat the last two champions at welterweight

Ali had some CHARM and a sense of humour to go along with his cockiness. OH and he also TOOK real challenges.. COuld you see Mayweather taking on the Welterweight equivilent of Joe Fraizer or George Foreman? not in a million years.. Floyd is the best Boxer in the world.. but he is a PUSSY and an arogant piece of turd.. the right comparison is could you see mayw take on the 130-135-140-147 equivalent of Frazier and Foreman? the answer is he beat everyone of notice at 130-135 he beat nobodies at 140 he beat the last two lineal champions at 147

Ali never beat up women. Ali never ducked anybody. both statements are wrong Ali had charges from one of his wives, I dont know if they were dropped. (mayw's wife dropped them and said she lied the first time around to get back at him) Ali choice of opponents after Manila until his retirement has been questioned many times.

Also Floyd has been calling out Mosley since he was at 130 and mosley was knocking people out at 135. Mosley chose to ignore him since he wasp4p then and now he has no choice but to acknowledge him now. So yeah it won't mean as much as it would have, but the older guys are more likely to challenge him then these younger guys. It's really a no-win situation. The only person that Floyd can fight and not take some criticism is a young, well-regarded, undefeated, legitimate title holder. So this severely restricts his potential pool of opponents to Hatton and Cotto. Arum will never let Cotto fight Mayweather and Hatton doesn't look like he will ever be "ready" so basically Mayweather will be criticized until he retires and probably far beyond.

Instead, Hatton became the man and we have already discussed ad nauseum what happened there. Mosley and DLH were never even close to Floyd's weight class until now. When Floyd moved to 140, DLH was at 154 (and had no intention of ever making 147 again) and Mosley was fighting between 147 and 154. Maybe Mosley was a possiblity but not DLH. Now if you want to say what I think you were trying to say about DLH and Mosley then I agree with you...Floyd beating them now does not mean what it would have 5 years ago (clearly). Nonetheless, beating guys like DLH and Mosley serves as a right of passage (like when DLH beat JCC) but these wins don't make Mayweather the greatest of all time by any means.
