WBC OKs open scoring!
The WBC has ratified and approved a move to make the scores of WBC title fights made public after the fourth and eighth rounds. As president Sulaiman described the motivation behind the decision: “Other subjective sports have open scoring where the public knows the score as the competition is actively taking place. So why not boxing?” The inaugural implementation of the open scoring will take effect on November 13th at the WBC title twin bill in Tokyo, Japan. WBC Bantam champ Hozumi Hasegawa defends against Genaro Garcia while WBC Straw champ Eagle Kyowa defends against Lorenzo Trejo.
Interesting
i can see it happeneing where i guy thinks he is a winning a fight he is being robbed in and they announce he is losing after the 8th
i think it could effect mental focus of the fighters is theyre aware of the scorecards but i like the idea overall....
Open scoring will definitely impact a fighter's strategy if he thinks he's behind, ahead, or even with his opponent. And I think it affects the way fights are judged in a positive way but of course it takes away all the suspense when the ring announcer is reading the score cards.
We'll just have to wait and see how it all works out.
I like it. I mean, it's WBC only right? So we can say for now it's a test run. Maybe it'll be such a good thing the other companies will take notice and add it. If anything your losing "some" suspense to the scoring. Isn't it usually we know who won or someone gets fucked over real bad? So what's wrong with knowing in advanced rather than bitching and moaning in 1 instant outburst? :D
i think it's a good idea, but like anything there are going to be flaws, it's just something that you have to do trial and error type thing to see how it's really going to turn out.
there is a good chance that it will improve judging, thats all i can really hope for, as for someone taking it easy because he knows that he has the fight won, well if it's obvious that's what the fighter is doing, then there should'nt be any dispute if the judge gives the round to the other fighter if the guy with the lead is going to coast and not fight, so i think that theory is ture to a certain extent but there are ways around it to either reward, penalize, or judge a fighter accordingly.
like i said it's something that is going to have to be tried to see if it works and benefits the sport. it can be easily removed if it don't work.
this sucks. it takes ALL the suspense away from the fight. unless its close
If you invest alot of energy in the drama of the decision, well then yes, sorry to ruin the fun for you.
Im assuming the boxers will know too. So we dont get the same problems we had with a fight like Wright vs Taylor.
Too bad its not in effect for this weekends fight (Mayweather and Baldomir)
don't need it, the judges won't save floyd
Untrue. Cause if the guy that is losing sees he is behind, he will turn it up, take more risk, and fight like he wants to win. This in turn will make his opponent fight to keep his lead.
They already tried this once in California and it failed miserably.
This is great news, atleast now we can see whats going on with some of these decisions and whatnot. Somewhere in the Vegas desert, Duane Ford is making a run for the border.
Because the guy winning will dance around and fight less.

I like how it's only after the 4th and 8th rounds, and not every round or even every other round. Any score after 8, unless it's an obvious blowout, is going to be somewhat close, so that doesn't take too much suspense away, and it will still make the fighter with the lead (that just sounds weird) keep working instead of coasting.
If scores were given after every round, it would dicatate the entire pace of the bout. This way, it gives a brief glimpse of what the judges are seeing and the fighters can adjust accordingly. Another way to do it would be to just give the scoring after the 6th round only, the halfway mark.
Very good observation. :boxing: :boxing: :boxing:
man, when is the WBC going to be recognized as the only TRUE governing body? It seems like its the only one that has its act together.
Perhaps when they stop stripping belts arbitrarily?
