What are the greatest first round knockouts?
Heres my list:
Marciano-Walcott II
T. Norris-Mugabi
McClellan-J. Jackson II
Tyson-Spinks
Liston-Clay II
Liston-Patterson I and II
Tyson v Spinks
Tua v Ruiz
Tua v Moorer
Louis v Schmeling II
Clay v Liston II
Jimmy Thunder v Grimsley
Even though this fight didnt end in the 1st round, I thought it was worth a mention - Dempsey v Willard. Willard was knocked down 7 times in the 1st round. Back then you didnt have to wait in a neutral corner after a knock down, so every time Willard was knocked down, Dempsey was hovering above him with his fists cocked back waiting for him to rise to his feet so he could knock him straight back down again.
The Eubank one was probably the most stylish - love him or hate him, the man was an original.
My favourite was probably Ray 'Boom Boom' Mancini VS Arturo Frias for the Lightweight championship.
Frias, the defending champ, came out & tried to knock out Mancini in the first round, repeatedly rocking him with hard, accurate shots,
but Mancini just gritted his teeth & blasted him back.
Seconds later it's Mancini getting on target, & delivers a series of devastating left hooks, KO'ing Frias.
One of the most action packed 2 minutes you'll ever see.
1. Louis vs Schmeling.....this is the grandaddy of 'em all IMO.
2. Tyson vs Spinks.........I still laugh when I think about the price of those ringside tix.
3. Lewis vs Golota.........proved, more or less, who was better between Bowe and Lewis.
4. Nunn vs Kalambay.....that counter left was a thing of beauty.
5. Tua vs Ruiz..............just makes me smile. :D
6. Benn vs Barkley........sheer unadulterated brutality.
7. Hearns vs Shuler......vicious.
8. Liston vs Patterson I.....destiny calleth.
9. Brewster vs Golota.....made a fan of me. :)
10. Jones Jr. vs Griffith II....finality.
My favorites are Jones Jr./ Griffin II and Tyson/Spinks. After Roy got DQ'd, you were left mad and wishing that the rematch could've been an hour later. For the rematch, Roy didn't show up, but RJ did, and the rest is history. As for Tyson/Spinks, you kind of got the feeling that Spinks was the last line of defense in keeping the linear heavyweight crown from falling into the hands of some kid. The tension and electricity in the air, man that fight had all the build up, and you just knew that it was Tyson's time. 90 seconds later, it was all over, and a new era began.
Tommy Morrison's first few fights the guys didnt even try to get up they would just lay there stiff it looked like there were dead. might i add Marcus Oliveira vs Bertis McMillan, when that right hand hit Bertis there was such a loud CRACK!!!!! Bertis beat the count but had no legs and fell onto the ref. LOL great stuff
It was called "The first round of WWII." Joe Louis changed America with that fight. More so than Jackie Robinson or Muhammad Ali or Arthur Ashe could've dreamed of doing, even in their defiance of the incorrect. When Roosevelt, or Truman I forget, felt his muscle and said we need more men like this for the effort, he became just like your every American, a black man in the times of segregation. With his athletic capabilities, he transcended the color barrier of modern Americanism and opened the doors to proving that black people were equal just like everyone else. He was more of a symbol is truth, but was an instrumental catalyst to integration and the empowerment of African-Americans across America. A Batman to Detroit, of sorts.
Hitler sent Shmelling to the states so even the people who hated blacks were rootin for him. And he (louis) got knocked out in the first fight in yankee stadium. What a way to redeem urself eh?
ANYONE say
LOUIS-SHMELLING
yet???
That has to be the most historical KO of all time. lol

Those early Tyson fights are awsome to watch. Tyson's head movement was awsome back then, not only was he strong as a bull but no one could touch him. The Colay fight especially, there is a slo-mo clip on youtube, where you see Tyson get real low and dodge about 3 Colay hooks and then rise up and nail Colay with a huge left hook, its really a thing of beauty. Then in the Johnson fight, Tyson rocks Johnson with a body shot and floors him, the ref asks Johnson if he wants to continue and Johnson begrudging says yes but he looks terrified. Then Tyson walks up and clobbers him with the most viscious right hand I've ever seen him throw, Johnson's face (another slo-mo clip) looks like it caves in when he gets hit. Too bad Tyson didn't continue to fight like this, and instead became a slugger/head hunter.
Tua-Ruiz is the goat.
Tysons got great first round knockouts. The quality of opposition isn’t the highest but it’s great entertainment.
David Jaco – Jaco can barely land a punch on Tyson, the best he can do is tie Tyson up occasionally. He’s gets knocked around the ring like a rag doll. The fight is stopped on the third knockdown. Morrisson also had a great first round, one punch knockout of Jaco.
Michael Jack Johnson – Tyson drops Johnson with a left hook to the body. Johnson gets up, Tyson throws one right hand and sends him right back down, ending the fight.
Reggie Gross – Tyson stands in front of Gross and dodges like ten punches in a row then throws one and knocks Gross down. 5 seconds later Gross is down again, fights over.
Robert Colay – Tyson comes in low under Colay’s punches. Drops Colay with a picture perfect left hook on the chin.
Sammie Scaff – Big, heavy, slow. Scaff was a punching bad for Tyson.
How does this sound? I need to submit an intro paragraph on first round KOs to a magazine, and this is what I have. You like?
When commentators are reading the tale of the tape, they relate the distance as 12 rounds or less. Unlike other sports, boxing matches can end in an instant. One lightning right hand or a sweeping left hook is all it takes to bring a halt to the action, whether in the first 10 seconds or the last 10 seconds.
Among the various scenarios in which knockouts can occur, the most unpredictable are the ones that don't make it out of the first round. There are many factors that can create a first round knockout. Going from 0-60 in the opening stanza can be difficult to do, so a boxer getting caught cold may never recover from an opponent's initial blitz. Conversely, a fighter whose nerves are jumping may get frozen by a more experienced pug with a professional's flair.
That, or sometimes a guy just hits real hard.
No matter the instigating factors, one thing that cannot be disputed is the sheer entertainment value of a dominating first round knockout. Follow us as we examine the sport's ultimate cure for a short attention span.
Yeah that shit was awesome and frightening at the same time. I remember that there was this lady at ring side all happy and shit and when she saw Jaidon collapse you could see her saying "Oh my God"...
No bullshit, I thought Jaidon had died when he went through the ropes. His body was stiff.
