Hear the thoughts of some of boxing’s top personalities and fighters as they share their take with FightFan.com on last Saturday’s James Toney vs. Samuel Peter decision in Los Angeles CA.
September 7, 2006
“Toney won the fight. Peter got away with a lot of illegal shots with very little warning. I thought that point the ref did take away for the double punch to the ears was the least flagrant of all the fouls. Peter was hitting him in the back of the head, and right on the back. I thought Toney boxed the sh!t out of him!”
- TSN’s Russ Anber
“I didn't score it round by round but I had James winning the fight from what I saw. Win, lose or draw it was clear to me that he was the better fighter overall. I get kind of turned off by boxing after fights like these. It seems that many times the announcers at ringside and the reporters in press row consistently put in more accurate scores than the guy that are actually paid to do so.”
- “Iceman” John Scully
“I THOUGHT TONEY WON BY TWO ROUNDS. PLUS A POINT WAS TAKEN AWAY. PETER SUCKS. HE KEPT THROWING PUNCHES TO THE BACK OF THE GUYS HEAD. THAT LOOKED SCARY.”
- Shannon Briggs
“I thought Toney won by at least two rounds and with the point deduction he should have won the fight fairly easy.”
- Jeff Mayweather
“I thought it was a great fight and good for the unpredictable heavyweight division. I’m sitting there thinking about when Toney and I fought at 160lbs and I have to give it up to him, its really amazing what he has done. I had the fight scored 115-112 Toney. “
- Reggie “Sweet” Johnson
“It was a bad decision. James Toney won that fight.”
- Diego “Chico” Corrales
“I thought Toney won... clearly. When they announced those lopsided scores, I was certain (especially with Peter's point deduction) they were for JT. He stung Peter repeatedly with picture-book jabs -- kept beating him to the punch. Defensively, with some of those moves with his back to the ropes, I wanted to shout Ole!
James got hit with blockbusters that would've felled any heavyweight (and they shook him) but he re-grouped very quickly, and was never out of his game.
The fact that Peter took Toney's shots and kept coming doesn't negate how flush they were. They weren't shoe-shines, and any qualified judge should have scored them solid hits -- plus, he landed far more than Peter.
There've been worse decisions, but those dissenting scores are impossible. Even if Toney finished strong and scored two knockdowns during the fight, he'd still have lost.”
- Joe Rein (Boxing Writers Association of America)
“I thought the kid won the fight (Peter). James didn’t do enough to win the fight. He didn’t finish strong like he normally does , didn’t go to the body enough, and didn’t dictate. The kid landed the harder shots and I thought that while it was close he did enough.”
- Mike “The Bodysnatcher“ McCallum
“I was at Staples for the fight. I thought split decision Toney, or maybe a draw, didn't think Peter won it though.”
- Vanes "the Nightmare" Martirosyan
“I thought James Toney had the edge. He was busier, sharper and showed better all around skills. Freddie had him ready. Peter did the best he could do and I thought had he snapped his jab more and came back with the hook behind the rights he was landing he would have looked better in the eyes of the fans. But he lacks movement, balance and getting position and I believe his size and strength kept him in the fight with James. An immediate rematch should be ordered, but probably won't be.”
- Dan Birmingham
“I thought that fight was disgusting. Toney won the fight hands down without a doubt. Since when does someone lose credit for boxing and knowing how to fight? Peter got credit for missing and throwing wild punches. James Toney brings it back to the old school with his ability. I thought he was amazing to watch. The man was robbed. This is really killing the sport and making boxing lose credibility. Anyone who scored that fight for Sam Peter doesn’t know boxing and shouldn’t watch it anymore.”

All I know is that all those rounds that some think were close were not IMO. Just because you hammer a guy for 2 minutes of a round and then back off and let him be aggressive even though he's missing shots doesn't give anyone the right to call the round close, much less give it to the guy that's missing. Peter did nothing but swing wild shots and get hit all night, and just because he landed a few single shots to the top and back of Toney's head that stung him, all in separate rounds that he was losing anyway, and Toney let him come forward swinging punches that missed, more or less without firing too much in return, people are calling this fight close. Toney hammered Peter until he chose to stop in each round, and when he turned it off it's not like Peter beat him up until the bell rang, Peter still couldn't do anything with Toney and that my friends is called controlling the action. It's just a shame they're going to get away with this, again.
I only bitch when threads concerning the fight keep popping up and people continue to make stupid comments.
You are the one that bitch and moan acting like you are on que with your fight winners.

This is quite funny coming from the King of stupid comments.
The same guy who said Toney would get blown out in 4, who was so sure but woudln't bet...
Nautulis agreed on the scores, that is way too many rounds for Peter, but the amount of bitching people are doing on this site about Toney losing is sad.
its only bitching if your guy dosnt get the short end of the stick because if they woulda gave it to toney you'd be writeing your local fucking congressmen
damn near the entire world of boxing had it for james toney...some of which have been doing boxing since you were in your daddys balls and your gonna say you dont give a fuck what these experts think????
wow i'll stop bitching as of right now because anyone that far from sane cant be takein seriously...im outta the ring guys im pullin my name outta the hat im right i know toney won 90 percent of the boxing world does...this guy and his little brood crew of morons thinks peter won..nothing to waste my time over any longer...nothin to see here folks move along james toney'll get em next time he'll knock his fucking block off
the amount of bitching people are doing on this site about Toney losing is sad.
there is too much of that as well as there is way too much of personal attack on people who think Peter won

Paulie said exactly what I said. Anyone that actually thinks Peter won the fight, or even thinks it was hard to judge, knows nothing about the sport. I will never respect any post they make on this sight, and I refuse to argue with idiots that can't defend their points with actual facts. It's unfortunate that these morons on this site alone are probably future judges. They meet the criteria: absolutely no knowledge of boxing and complete incompetence.
One of the best post I have read this year.
I thought Toney won the fight with Peter by one or two rounds.
I also thought that Toney lost the fight with Rahman by one or two points.
What bothers me is not so much the split decision, but the ridiculous scores 116:111.
Jesus Christ, people are still making a fucking fuss aobut this fight. It was a close fight, I had it even going into the last round which Peter won convincingly. The ref was definitely in favor of Toney, and the point deduction for the ear cuffing was blatant BS. It was a ridiculous move on Peter's part but not a dangerous or damaging manuever. Someone here called it a double rabbit punch?? Are you blind? He hit Toney's ears with open gloves because Toney was bulling in with his head. It shouldn't have cost him a point.
Without the point deduction, Peter wins without any doubt in my mind. Because of that lost point, I can see it as draw or Toney by a round.
I mean I see people here giving Toney the 10th and 12th rounds? Those were big rounds for Peter and he should have won them on any sane person's scorecards.
Really I could care less about that anyone in the boxing community has to say about the fight or who they had winning. I had Peter close. You can say you had Toney by a few rounds, and that's cool with me, but anyone who had Toney by a huge margin or claimed that he dominated should rewatch the fight.

Why is Briggs yelling?
you mean to tell me dan raf had peters winning? what a douche
Yep he said 114-113 Peter. He always agrees with judges; doesn't matter how bad a decision is. He will find a way to rationalize it.
Remember, Dan Rafael is the same guy who said John-Marquez was not a hometown decision BEFORE HE EVEN HAD SEEN THE FIGHT. He gave details implying he had seen it and everything. About a week after that, he says he's still waiting to see a tape of the fight to determine whether it was a bad decision or not.
Basically, he's a fraud.
see thats the thing though man boxing is just like politics or any other form of power ... once you get there you'll do anything to keep it ..so if they say "hey mr toney see we got 5 mil sitting here that says your our bitch and peters gonna win no matter how good you do ..and if you so much as make a stink about it your off the network"
you dont think for a second toney would be there bitch ?
once we get in the big picture we'd give a fuck less about the sport because in a sport that nets as much cash as boxing anybody will do anything and anybody to keep it
mike tyson is training in a las vegas show room right now ...not because he wants to ...but because he was don kings bitch don king took what he wanted and told mike what to say how to say it and when to get outta town
the shit is all about money guys
Tragic, but very true...
No liquor... just a few beers, and yes, I'm a smoker. How'd you ever guess? Seriously though, I wish real fans, who don't give a damn about the politics and all the other bullshit, should be heavily involved in the industry. It won't happen, but it would be great for the sport. The elite of the sport make millions, and I wish we fans could instigate shit, so the best fights would be put on, and they would be judged fairly.
