People say that Peter was exposed as a one dimensional slugger against Klitschko. He knocked Klitschko down three times, almost had him knocked out. You can say what you want about the first two kockdowns, but the third knockdown late in the fight, if it hadn't a been at the end of a round, Wlad would have been finished in my opinion. Could Toney have given Wlad that type of trouble?
contrary to popular belief, i think wladimir has been working on his "inside game." notice how he was putting pressure on byrd near the end of that fight.
I just don't like how you fancy yourself an expert when I don't even consider myself one yet I was leading the Boxing Scene Prediction League before its apparent demise. It's easy to say WLAD WINS EASY but if you don't explain why (like Knives did), then it's a pretty empty post and thought.
I never said I considered myself an "expert". I've been following the sport since 1975; but that doesn't make me an "expert". I'm always learning something new.
You want my reasoning, okay. Wlad is 6'6", and around 240 Lbs and is a skilled boxer with very good punching power. Toney is 5'8" and usually tips the scales around 230 Lbs and couldn't bust a grape in a food fight at heavyweight. He has nothing to keep Wlad off of him, nothing to get Wlad's respect; and while he may be the most defensively skilled fighting north of 200, he was not particularly impressive against Hasim Rahman in his last fight, and I consider Rahman only slightly above average. Wladimir would destroy Rahman inside of 6 rounds and with, quite possibly, more brutality than he displayed against Bryd, who hits about as hard as Toney.
Would Wladimir steamroll, Toney? In all honesty, given his style, probably not; but he would stop him after a dominating performance around the 7th or 8th. Why did I say "steamroller and a cockroach"? I was trying to underline how competitive or non-competitive such a match-up would be in my humble opinion.
James Toney is one of the best pound-4-pound fighters to come along in decades; but there's only so far that will take you. He is incredibly skilled and far above any of his heavyweight contemporaries in this regard. The "X-Factor" is where the problem lies for James. Power is the boss in the big-boy division; you don't have to be George Foreman but you better be able to put some hurt on your opponent if you want to be successful at the elite level. Dominick Guinn, John Ruiz, and Hasim Rahman are NOT elite level fighters. They, well John and Hasim are above average; but they are not on the same level as a Lennox Lewis, a prime Holyfield, Mike Tyson, Riddick Bowe, Vitali Klitschko or, yes, even a Wladimir Klitschko...who is the only elite fighter out there right now, that we know of.
Peter may or not be; but he definetly appears to have "elite" power if nothing else. And while I have gone on record picking Peter to win by a knock-out, I will be Toney's loudest cheerleader for a title-shot should he prove me wrong. I have tremendous respect for James Toney and all he's accomplished; but I just feel this is beyond him. In the olden days when guys like Langford and Fitzsimmons and the first Jack Dempsey beat men bigger than themselves, they were not only fighting men who's skill level was no where near their own; but they also had enough pop in their punches to make those men warry. James doesn't have that; and we're going to see just how far James can go as a heavyweight, I feel, on Saturday night.
Until he beats a crude but powerful puncher like Peter, I cannot fathom him beating a skilled, powerful puncher like Klitschio.l...that is why I said "steamroller and a cockroach" because, right now, that's how much chance I give James of winning such a match.
Hey, I was just thinking of you....wanted to make sure you had a good visual so you could comprehend it. Think of me as an "expert/special ed teacher". :D

Wlads jabs are like other poeples right hands...Toney has trouble people that stay outside of his range and box him away. as long as Wlad wouldnt get close and try smothering his punches, somethin that he really hasnt ever done much since he has been training with Emmanual Stewart, i dont really think hed be in any trouble.
and because Wlad's jabs and straight rights have so much uncommon power, he would not only outbox Toney, he would hurt him pretty bad in the process.

Toney would have a chance if he came in to fight at 215 or lower. That would give him his best shot because he'd be faster. Otherwise the size difference is so dramatic I don't see how he could win...but who knows this is one of the most unpredictable sports.
Its a size mistmatch. Frame wise Wlad is 2x Toney.
Besides he is skilled.
So how would a Toney whose a midget in comparison deal with someone twice his size in the first place, and someone with skill at that I do not know. And Toney never fought a man who punches as hard...Rahman "one hit wonder" dont count.

I think Toney is a hall of fame fighter and one of the all time greats but as good as he is and as brittle as Wlads chin is he aint getting by that ramrod jab.

That's far too big of a size mismatch, because Wlad is actually skilled. That fight wouldn't look good for Toney and I'd hazard to guess that'd be the first time he'd have lost by a knockout.
