I am considering joining a club or taking boxing lessons. I have always been interested in the sport and want to give it a shot. I just know that i will want to compete due to my competitive nature. My stats are 5'6 140 age 35(look about 25) in very good physical condition(weight training and running 5 miles a day). I have watched the training videos and work out on the heavy bag and rope for the past 3 months but thats the extent of my boxing expierience. My question is am i told old to start? Can I start competeing at my age? Will i be wasteing my time? Any helpful info or tips will be greatly appreciated.
I would go do it. Even if you get your ass completely kicked it will toughen you up and you will learn so much about yourself. Don't listen to anyone who says otherwise, do it now before you really are too old to try it.
I found this on the net seems to me there is a masters division that starts at age 35. Anyone know anything about this?

GEez, some of you guys are harsh and just complete assholes. Though I guess that's what makes you idiots tick. Anyways. In boxing, age I think of having to do with your weight class. The lighter you are, the harder it is because you need sharp reflexes, stamina, and energy to keep up with the quick young guns. 140lbs for your age won't be kind to you at all. It's a hard division with quick and strong young guys and at that point of your age, most guys are getting out if they haven't already at that weight. If you were a heavyweight, then I woulda said go ahead, look how many heavies are over 35 nowadays. Though you have to think about the time it takes for training, preparing, and whatnot. At least your running though I don't think it'll help at all in your weight class. If you gained about 80lbs or something and joined the heavies, then you might got a shot. Good luck!
Internationally 34 is the age lmit for amateur boxing(I think). So as far as competing, I would say yeah your too old. But you could still join your local club for the workout part of it. You would still learn the basics of boxing and maybe you would get to do some sparring.
