It seems like no one considers Toney a threat anymore in the HW division, blowing up the weight issue and acting like the man can't fight anymore. Yes the weight is an issue, but I think he is going to come in alot better shape then he was for the Rahman fight from now one (could be wishful thinking but we'll see). He was fat, in the worst shape of his life against a focused Rahman, and still should have won the fight (I had it 7 rounds to 5 for Toney, he landed the more effective shots, but this isn't a Rahman/Toney thread). He's still by far the most skilled man in the division and his age has not noticeably slowed him down. His game is 95% mental and smart boxers can hang around alot longer then guys like RJJ who relies on 100% reflex
So If the man comes in in decent to good shape for Peter and schools him, will everyone be talking about James Toney again? In my eyes he will beat Peter, then beat Maskaev and fight Wlad soon after that, a fight that everyone thinks he will get pummeled in, but the in-decent-shape Toney will give Wlad a boxing lesson on his way to a UD. I think he is still the most dangerous HW and will be holding 2 belts within a year or 2. What do you think?

i hope your right man, but i still have him getting KOed in the 9th or earlier or maybe even later by Peter i hope im wrong for boxings sake but i also hope im right for boxings sake and future, so will se.............
Nobody ever questioned Toney's ability in the ring.
People question his continued success at heavyweight when he faces a real threat.
James Toney hasn't fought anyone at heavyweight yet.

yeah, i don't consider Toney's career finished either.. anytime you have as good a boxing skill as Toney has, you always have to keep it in consideration..
The funny thing about all of it is that Toney doesn't need to prove anything anymore. It's all just trophies on the mantle at this point. He's already a first ballot HOFer.
People knock him for his weight, for being a blown up little guy with light heavyweight power...but they should be praising this. There hasn't been a fighter like him in a LONG time...a guy who has been in multiple weight classes for sustained periods of time who had success like this. A guy who has perfected his craft and who can fight on instinct against men much bigger than him. That's fucking heart.
I hope he beats Peter and goes on to have another couple of fights. I'd like to see him down to 230 where he says hes comfortable.
I think Toney still has a chance to win a title or two. But he can't do it if he comes in at 235-240, ecspecially since hes 38. Like McKay said JT needs to get down to 220-225...

I think your either high on crack or delusional. no offense intended
I dont write him off, 2 things though, he has get back down to near 220 pounds and he's going to have problems with alot of these taller opponenets. I think Sergei is the shortest of the soviet title holders and he is 6'4 and a half. Lucky for him he doesn't match up all that horribly against Sam Peter. Peter is not excessively tall, he's raw, and he's slow.
maskaev is da shortest hes 6"3...
toney hasnt let enibody down yet,hes stuck 2 his word and fought himself along, when he gets a big loss we shud start debatin his retirement, untill then, lets support the guy hes fuckin good

peter is nothing more than a novice journeyman. toney should beat him with ease. toney cant beat wlad though or lyakovich though. he just doesnt have the power to damage them enough to move them back so james can control the pace of the fight. if toney had heavyweight power he would be able to conquer the division but he doesnt.
