Tito vs Whitaker

BTW Trinidad didn't struggle with top opposition, you may be thinking of ODLH who has fought the best but struggle with the best. Trinidad only has 1 controversial win against ODLH. Otherwise he destroyed or comfortably beat all his opponents including Compas, Oba Carr, Vargas and Reid, he didn't struggle with anyone other than ODLH until he went to middleweight. The perception isn't that Tito struggles with top opposition, rather he struggles with top 'boxers' - guys that stick, move, and counter. Obviously, Tito got outboxed by Oscar, but his next fight he was outboxed by David Reid. Yes Tito ended up beating Reid like a rag doll, but it wasn't exactly a comfortable win as you suggest. Reid was boxing Tito's ears off for the first half of the fight until he got caught, then of course it went all downhill after. He was also outboxed by Hopkins and Wright, as a result the perception was formed

True, they were stonger than him, but they didnt impose their will on him. They simply out boxed him. Wright and Hopkins both counterpunched him to death, and he couldnt adjust because Trinidad can only fight 1 way. So with that said, Sweet Pea, would have been more elusive, countered him to death, and would have beat him Winky Wright fashion in his prime. Actually I think that B-Hop did impose his will and outmuscled Tito in the tie ups. I just think that Tito would'nt face many of the obstacles he faced in his only losses. Tito is a very accurate puncher and think he would land more than most of Whittakers opponents. Also Tito's power and strength at 147lbs can;t be taken too lightly.

DLH gave the blueprint on how to beat him (although he didn't get the decision) and Hopkins and Wright executed the plan better (probably because it was at MW). I think Whitaker wins 7 rounds to 3 for a fairly comfortable decision.

Now the question becomes would a prime Whittaker have had enough pop in his punches to keep Trinidad honest. If Trinidad didn't have to worry about Whittakers punches then cutting off the ring and closing the distance would be easier for Trinidad. I think ODLH had the pop to keep Trinidad honest and was therfore able to out box him in the first half of his fight with Trinidad. But cutting off the ring and closing the distance with someone who has pop or can hurt you is totally different than doing it against someone who can't hurt you. I like Whitaker in his prime to take this by fairly comfortable decision. Whitaker beat taller in his career and clearly Trinidad struggles against superior boxers. He struggled mightily against the 2 best boxers he faced (close to their primes) Winky, Bernard, and DLH. Trinidad was a great fighter and was greatly entertaining but boxers with tight defense were his weakness. Im not sure if Duran was truly the best lightweight ever. Im a huge fan, but who did he fight? Anyway, the Whitaker who fought Tito wasnt just on the slide, he was a shadow of his former self. Tito would not of been able to touch him if they fought 2 years earlier. IMO DHL just about won against Whitaker, but was not able to land one clean shot against him. And DHL was very fast with a good reach. Duran is the best lightweight ever. He went up in weight to fight big names but he could've stayed at that weight for the remainder of his career. Duran's power, defense, stamina and chin would make him a favorite versus ANY other lightweight. Remember he beat a PRIME SRL at welterweight when Duran actually started boxing at 122lbs. If 6 years ago Pac-Man would've came up to Welterweight and beaten a prime Tito Trinidad or prime ODLH it would've not been as impressive as Duran beating a prime SRL. IMO Duran would win atleast 6 of 10 versus ANY other lightweight in History.

So I was thinking about this the other day. In their bout, Tito won a wide margin UD, which is very contrary to the notion that Tito struggles against top tier 'boxers.' however, Whitaker's coke problem was emerging around the time of this bout as well and he had decline considerably. So my question to you fellas is how a prime Whitaker would've fared against Tito. Would it have resulted in the same way as perhaps Tito just had his number? or would Whitaker have boxed circles around him. I really like Trinidad but I'm not sure if he would've beaten a prime Sweat Pea. Trinidad was very powerful and strong at welterweight and could've probably got in some good work but I see a prime Whitaker winning but then again Trinidad had dynamite in both hands at that weight, probably most powerful welterweight of all time so who know's but I would say Whittaker wins 6 out of 10. Sweet Pea in his prime gives Tito a boxing lesson. i would think that Sweet Pea would give trinidad a boxing lesson also, but you have to take into consideration that in this case Trinidad was also the naturally bigger man and could impose his will on whitaker a bit more than the other greats whitaker fought. I'd favor sweet P but wouldn't ule out trinidad in this one.

Sweet Pea was probably the 2nd best lightweight ever right under Duran. He chose to fight Tito he didnt really run he traded with Tito for most of the fight towards the end he couldnt take it anymore and just stood away from Tito. He was clearly not the same fighter he was when he beat J.C.C ( i mean got robbed againts J.C.C). But he was still game and In my opinion beat DLH 2 years before he fought Tito. yeah i would still personally give it to Tito. Just the way Tito beat Sweet Pea, its tough for me to view Whitiker dismantling tito. Both in the primes though, it would have been a more competitive fight.

I think they fought during Trinidad's peek and Sweet P's beginning to fall. The way I saw their styles match, I think Sweet P at his peek would've won a few more rounds but I would still have to favor Trinidad. Styles make fights and it seemed to me in that fight that Sweet P realized he was either gonna catch left hooks or straight rights, he took the rights.

Not sure what round but Tito broke Whitakers jaw in that fight and Whitaker like the true warrior he is fought on till the 12th. Whitaker was truly one of the best man.

imo means in my opinion if u think hes not then thats ur opinion but dont try to take mine away or make mine look bad, he was one of the best boxers ive ever seen and im sure a lot of people would agree...
