I know Tyson lost and I never paid attention to the claims of Tyson fans saying it was a slow count in the beginning. But then I took notice and realized they have an argument...
I got 13 seconds...
this is like the corrales spitting out his mouthpiece excuse. Its just rediculous and stupid. accept the fact that ur fighter lost. i hate it when this happen. If tyson went down there, got that "long" count, and then went on to win the fight, this excuse would have never been brought up for douglas!!!
I just counted and it was completely legit. He counted slow for 3 seconds, then 4, 5, and 6 he speeds up. Tyson fans are fucking crybabies. Any other fighter and this horrible excuse never comes up. Great point Diego. My thoughts exactly!
It's funny how your taste in boxers changes with age. I had the exact same change of heart once I truly understood the intricacies of boxing. Tyson is/was a spectacle while Holyfield is simply a fighter.
speaking of holyfield, there is a program on him on ESPN classic either this monday or next monday at 9pm EST. not exactly sure which, it said "next week" but i think maybe the commercial was old
they are going to show holyfield/foreman and one other one, i believe the second bowe fight. there will then be a program discussing his place in history.
i wish they wouldve given tyson a 30 count to make up for it, and let him fight on with his mouythpiece in backwards, maybe douglas could have given him brain damage and spared everyone the misguided sideshow that tysons career became.
i used to love tyson like everyone else when i was a kid but i dont give a shit about him anymore. its not so much that i dont like him but when you contrast him with a guy like evander holyfield its hard to be a fan of tyson for me.

The count may have been a little long but I don't think that contributed to the outcome of the fight. When Douglas is knocked down he clearly is aware and looks more pissed that he was knocked down than disoriented. IMO, Douglas could have stood at 5 or 6 but as people have said simply took the allowable time. There was no reason to rush to his feet and he didn't. If Douglas had been more hurt I would consider this a more valid argument. Bottom line, Tyson came in unprepared and with a new corner team, and paid the ultimate price... his career.

True. All I'm saying is isn't it weird to think that one of the biggest upsets in sports history could have easily have never happened. I think Tyson was just destined to lose that night...
Look at Douglas. He's more than capable of getting up sooner, but he doesn't rush it. The second he's knocked down you can see that he's not out of it in the least. He did what all smart fighters should do, wait and steady your legs before getting up just to be safe. His head never even hit the canvis, he immediately could've gotten up but waited.
it doesnt matter how fast the count was. douglas was observing the count. the fighter has the right to believe that after 1, 2 will come. then 3, then 4, and so on so forth. It doesnt matter how fast or slow they come as long as there is the same amount of time in between counts.
Douglas waited till 8 to stand up. he clearly knew how much time he had. He could have easily gotten up if the count was as fast as normal.
And a 13 second count isnt that unusual. they are usually anywhere from 8 seconds to 12 seconds. They are never exactly 10
it's a 10 count, not 10 seconds.

Tyson was given more than 10 seconds when he was knocked down. And as others have said, it was clear Douglas was able to get up but paced himself and it's a 10 count, not 10 seconds.
This is an old one... it doesn't matter what the actual time count is, the fighters have to follow the referee's count (I'd never before seen until the other night the guy at ringside with white gloves whose count is ahead of the referee's).
If the ref had initiated a proper count, I feel sure that Douglas would have answered it, you can see him closely observing the count...
Yeah your right, but it was close. A different ref might have waved the fight off...
