A lot of people been bashin gatti, sayin hes not elite, but gatti is one of a kind...4 ring magazine fights of the year means one hell of an exciting fighter, who held a couple titles whether u call them paper or not, there will never be another gatti, and its only right he be inducted into the hall of fame. the only other fighter i can think of with 4 fight of the years is george foreman there mite be a couple of more boxers but i cant remember off the top...
I also agree that Chacon is borderline, but his resume and ability were both significantly better when compared to Gatti's, and he had similar FOTY bouts. I doubt that anyone can seriously claim Gatti was a better fighter than Chacon. Olivares, Lopez, Limon...those are some very good names.
I don't know how many of Chacon's fights you have seen but to say his skills were significantly better then Gatti's is a stretch IMO...
I have no doubt Gatti will make the hall, he won't be first ballot but he will be in there. He turned many non-boxing fans to hardcore fans with his fights alone, he beat a lot of good fighters and was one of the bigger stars that boxing has had the last 10 years especially in the east coast. He might not have been a great fighter but he had plenty of great fights and people loved him, weather we like it or not he will get in.
sorry man, i just love watching brawlers like gatti, ward, barrios, katsidis and arce more over their slick and smooth counterparts... its really these fighters who makes me watch boxing...
anyway if they dont make it to the HOF, at least there is youtube for us to enjoy what these brawlers gave us... great fights....
thanks man...
Exactly, I meant that one cannot use brawling itself as a criterion. One has to take into consideration their actual level of success with that style relative to opponents faced. Foreman, Chacon, Pryor (by choice), Marciano (to a degree, he had underrated defense) - these are examples of brawlers who have reached that level of status.
Average fight fans love brawlers, which leads to biases. Brawling in exciting fights does not make a Hall of Famer. The Hall of Fame caliber Gatti-type fighter is already in the Hall - his name is Bobby Chacon. If Gatti was of Chacon's caliber he too would be headed there, but he wasn't.

Many people also question Chacon's HOF credentials, both him and gatti used the same "Block punches with my face" style and both had very similar careers.

I never said they don't - in fact I explicitly noted that they can, and gave an example. Gatti was not Chacon's caliber.

then i love being an average fan tengoshi san! ... if u want to shell out 50 dollars to watch floyd jr, or calzaghe in a snoozefest to be an above average fan thats ur business... if brawlers dont make HOF in ur watch then its really fine by me...

i very much agree with u man... he always delivers for the fans... his courage was unquestionable... great fan friendly fighter this gatti...
In my opion Gatti should be in HOF.
why?
If you standup and eat so much leather and still punch is very impressive thing.
A Fan Fav. in many years, Everybody knows if its Gatti's fight its always entertaining who doesnt, why Baldy-Gatti was very much enticpated. Both dont have a skills to be KOF but the have heart and determination and that is enough to become in HOF.
As for Vargas i think he should take someone and win him. Go through the ladder again but it would be risky for him to.
What a dumb thing to say.
whatever, thats ur opinion, all im sayin is that 4 fights of the year in less then ten years means exciting no matter who ur fightin, and to say micky ward or robinson is a bum isnt true, there not elites but there good fighters...and whether u like it or not i guarntee gatti will get in...
Gatti?
I have nothing against Arturo Gatti. Like many have said, he is a blood and guts warrior who gave every morsel of his being every single fight he stepped into the ring. He fought past cuts. He fought through blood. He got up off the canvas and kept giving it his all- often to come back and win. Gatti is a people's champion where attaining more real championships failed him.
That said, the Hall of Fame is not meant to gauge fighters who are fan favorties. In my eyes, a boxer should not be entered into the hall of fame save for his abilities. Yes, Gatti was involved in more than his fair share of Ring magazine's fights of the year....but that is more due to his ability not being much greater than his opponent's. When the past greats, like Ali and Foreman, were involved in Fights of the Year it was against OTHER AMAZING FIGHTERS. Other men who could be on all time greats lists and be remembered. They fought hard battles against other top-notch warriors and came out on top. Gatti simply gave his heart against opponents of a lower level. He did not possess the skill to dust them, so the fight was bloody, and tumultous, and close. But these opponents of Gatti, like Ward, will fall into obscurity- unlike the men Ali and Foreman fought.
If I put two street kids into a ring, of similiar size, a bloody, brutal battle might ensue. Neither of these untrained, unskilled boy might have an advantage over the other so it would become a punch-for-punch fiasco until one dropped. If they both had heart, and were unwilling to lose, they might fight past broken noses, fractured hands, and knock-downs. It could even be a fight of the year like scenario. Without the skill, and a career that merits a place, though, these two kids don't belong in the hall of fame. Even if they did it four times against other untrained, unskilled fighters.
Gatti does not have the career of a Hall of Famer. He does not have the acheivement of a Hall of Famer. Gatti fought some close, fight of the year battles, but not against great fighters like Ali and Foreman, but against standard journeymen types. Plain and simple- No, Gatti does not belong in the hall of fame. He deserves a place in the hearts of boxing fans for how hard he fought for our enjoyment. We should remember the man with a nod of approval and be glad we spent our pay-per-view dollars on him over the years. Every boxing fan should acknowledge how hard he fought, what a heart he had, and wish him well once he retires. What we should not do, though, is let our emotions about him urge us to put him beside men like Robinson, Ali or Foreman.
Thanks for the memories, Arturo.
I'm having not understanding that too. Barry and Terry does not belong to HOF that's why I won't be surprised if those assholes at the HOF will nominate Gatti. Like the Ring Magazine said ...even the prestigious IBHOF is getting corrupt.
terry norris is ok for the bill but barry m and danial zar could get the boot
it doesnt matter who he fought, the commone denominator was that he was in all of them, also ali had more then 4, all the other people that had 4 or more are in the hall of fame, regardless of the comp, gatti was exciting, dramatic, a comeback hero, and the ultimate blood and guts warrior, and should be remembered forever in the hall of fame..
What a dumb thing to say.
I love Gatti, he's one of my fav fighters but to say he's a HOFmer is a little too much. I for one would like the boxing HOF to measure the skills of fighters, who they fought and who they beat to make it more exclusive i guess. If Gatti were to enter the HOf it would be for what he has done for boxing and what he gave the fans but IMHO it shouldn't be that way. His heart belongs in the HOF but not his skill (not saying that gatti sucks but he's not considered HOF material in my eyes).
why do they let people like barry mcgu in but gatti has to stay out i dont get it ...
Im sure you already read the othe thread somone said mcgure beat Esubio Pedroza to get i the HOF.
its not a key, but it is what it is, gatti may be the most exciting fighter of the past decade as far as how many times he fought wars wit others and showed his heart....
Throw in Antonio Diaz in for always showing heart and giving his all, except Diaz was a better fighter then Gatti so he was the one who actually doing the damage.
