Definently not IMO. Gatti's days are ending and Baldomir was just too strong, Tarver was weak and got his ass embarassed, and I don't know what was wrong with Julio. The trainer can't fight the fight for you. As far as gym work I doubt anyone on these forums would know really.
you also have to look at it this way. none of his fighters listened to him. he was telling tarver not to throw wild punches and just to fight outside and tarver was going duh duh uhhuh but wasnt doing it. he was telling gatti not to brawl with baldy but he was anyway. the 7th round i think it was gatti stricktly boxed him and beat him in that round. same as the first round. i mean it was that easy. but he was trying to brawl he was like buddy said listening to the crowd to much. but you have tarver when he is being pressed does not listen to anything anyone says. gatti who is the same way. brewster who is still not that impresive to me. he beat wlad wow!! than he beat golota which again to me now is not that impressive. EVERYONE was singing his praises when he took tarver pass roy. but now he lost a few fights bc his fighters werent doing what he told them to do and all of a sudden he is overrated.
I see what you're saying but it works both ways. You are right that Gatti and Tarver weren't listening to his instructions. But part of that is because McGirt is asking them to do things that they aren't used to or comfortable with. There is nothing wrong with improving a fighter's weaknesses but you are who you are. Gatti is a brawler at heart and McGirt should have tried to work within those parameters rather than change him to a pure boxer. That being said I agree Gatti looked best when he strictly boxed Baldomir... that just is not his style.

Just got this from Fightnews, surely that Prince Badi dude is doomed against RJJ...
In addition to this experience, Ajamu will have the added benefit of having trainer Buddy McGirt working his corner, along with his long-time trainer Denny Brown...
Well you know what it was also. I think when McGirt got Gatti to win against Ward using abit more "boxing" techniques, he was immediately sold that Gatti could outbox anyone rather than ever brawl again. WRONG. Beating Ward by boxing him...that doesn't count for much. From then on, he was on this only box type of role and looked bad to terrible at while doing it. I hear he was more of a boxer before he became a brawler, well whatever type of boxing he did back then must of gave him more success than whatever boxing Mcgirt was trying to teach him. I think McGirt gets fixed on one idea way before a fight and if that doesn't go right, he doesn't have any new advice during the fight. Remember they was talking about hitting Floyd in the Mongblablonga, whatever the fuck they called it? Or hit him so much his arms would fall off. Didn't quite go as planned. Haha.
I don't think he could have brawled Baldomir and won the fight. I've only seen clips, so I could be dead wrong, but it seemed Gatti was doing fine when he boxed and got into trouble when he decided to stand in one spot and trade. Baldomir looks to be pretty good at cutting off the ring though. The one thing i've noticed under McGirt is Gatti does not hook to the body much anymore. McGirt tries to get him to jab to the body from the outside, but his body shots were one of his best punches and he doesn't seem to use them anymore.

I don't think McGirt, Roach or Steward could have done anything for Gatti to beat PBF. Mayweather is unbeatable. Up against Hopkins? Tarver was either deaf or didn't have the abilities that night to listen to McGirt to be able to deat Hopkins that night.
No, the only way Gatti could have beat Mayweather was a lucky punch. Mayweather would have had to get lazy in the ring, or take some form of uneccessary risk to let Gatti land a magic KO for Gatti to win that fight.
I still find it strange that his fights have a lot of difficulty adapting during a fight. It seems to be a common problem this year, so I'm not sure if it's lack of preperation, or if it's just the type of fighters he chooses to train. He seems to like to find the "diamonds in the rough" so to speak..
i was about to start this thead last night
mcgirt is defiantely having the worst year of any trainer.
brewster, julio, gatti all got completely owned.
its getting to be mcgirts signature line to say to his fighter "i cant let you take this kinda punishment, im gonna stop the fight"
can't help but agree... his top 4 stars, all beaten in a span of 4 months...
It has become clear to me that Buddy overuses the word "baby"...I had a stop watch and between rounds I counted 784 babies which resulted in 5 minutes and 18 seconds of the 8 minutes Gatti was in the corner.
Cmon man...cut down on the babies!
The thing I've always wondered is he seems to give the right advice in the ring but his fighters seem to be unable to respond. I mean, if just one of his fighters didn't follow his advice, then I would say it's just that guy being stubborn. But it seems to be the case with a lot of them. I know Buddy wants them to box, but if it's not working they're going to resort to their old ways. Perhaps he does not prepare his fighters to box as well as he would like them to. Of course, we'll never know, because none of us are inside the training camps.
Buddy McGirt has always been a little overrated imo. He is a good guy and genuinely trys but he isnt the trainer a lot of people kept saying he was. For one thing he should have had Gatti keep both his hands up a long long time ago.
As for boxing baldomir that was out of the question he tried, but Baldomir clearly had the reach advantage at the distance popping gatti with repeated japs followed by right hands. Add to that McGirt had gatti with his left hand at his waist every right hand landed. As it did with mayweather.
Sorry buddy but not everyone should try to roll the shoulder and box from the outside.
He did not have the physical reach advantage.

Also true, but when he boxed, I think the 7, he won that round, standing toe 2 toe wasn't working at all, Mcgirt told him what he needed to do to win, but gatti wasn't dedicated to boxing. Also it did look like Baldomir had the reach advantage even though Gatti was an inch taller, & had a 3 inch arm length advantage.
He tried boxing and he stuck to it for as long as he could but he just kept getting caught with big shots, with full extension on them (because of Baldomir's superiority at a distance) from round 1!!

I think the problem here is a 2 way street. Sure McGirt asked Gatti to box more just like he did against Floyd. Problem was that Gatti is a brawler and his natrual inclination is to brawl. So my point is that McGirt relies too much on his fighters fighting his way regardless of their nature. Guys like Gatti and Julio just aren't pure boxers. There is nothing wrong with trying to improve these guys boxing skills but it would be wrong to rely on these fighters to become superior boxers. Use what they have not what they don't.

You are right. The one round were Gatti just boxed Baldomir and stayed away from his right hand he won convincingly even though he had to throw less punches to do so.
True, i was thinking about ol'Buddy too, but he was telling Gatti to box, which was the only way he could win, every time he would stand & throw, he'd always get the worst of the exchange.

yeah it was round 8 i think
His instructions are always very specific and he always gives the right instructions, his fighters don't seem to follow them. I thought the most worthy advice he gave on Saturday was for Gatti to CIRCLE RIGHT. If Gatti had kept on his feet and circled right, the straight right of Baldomir would have been a nonfactor. Instead Gatti either decided to stay flat footed or try to square up with Baldomir by moving left. Gatti squandered very good advice imo.
Another thing, the worst trainer of the year has to be Yoel Judah. When your fighter is hurt, you don't SCREAM incoherently shadow boxing in front of your dazed fighter and expect him to get half of anything your saying. Yoel choked just as much as Judah did imo.
