Yeah, it's called Griffin getting rid of Eddie Futch for the rematch.
I suppose Eddie was his trainer for the first match. Well to me that's more of a secondary reason, because Griffin should've went out and fought Jones like he did the first time. That may of not been possible either, because Jones knew exactly what he was going up against after fighting him the first time.
Montell Griffin was giving Roy Jones hell, beating him! He was obviously a very, very good fighter.
IF you ever seen Roy's Beyond The Glory documentary then you'll understand what i'm about to say. Jones has a very complex mind and the way he boxers, he carries most of his opponents if you want to go that far with it. Doesn't like to take a lot of risks. It's always safety first with him, it's very weird how it took him many rounds to drop Griffin the first time they fought but then in their rematch he destroys Griffin in one.
I think Griffin was a very talented fighter. He was a 1992 Olympian who reminded me a little of Zahir Raheem. Like Raheem, they both had a hard time marketing themselves because of their tricky, tactical styles.
In the first Toney fight, it was simply a case of Toney underestimating Griffin. However, the second fight was a str8 robbery. In the first Jones fight, he was brilliantly effective with his combos to the head and body. Jones was unsure of how to attack him because of Griffin's tricky counter punching style. Everytime Jones went to the ropes, Griffin would rip him with combos and then retreat. He was a very difficult opponent for Jones, and was winning the fight until the DQ. The second fight was simply a case of Jones being a much better fighter.
After that, he was stopped by Michaelzcewski and lost a decision to Harding in one of the most difficult fights I ever had to sit and watch. He deserved the decision against Hoye a couple years ago, but what can you do? Griffin is a very good opponent, but never had it to take it to the next level.
Like Raheem? maybe in being akward suprising and not marketable fighters. But body type griffen is shorter and much more squat than raheem who is long and lean. Plus raheem is the dirtier fighter
he beat James Toney twice gave Roy Jones his first loss.

read the fight analysis of those fights and you will see that none were really won by griffen. Good fighter nowhere remotly near great but good ansolid and now nothing more than an opponent.

This is fairly sugar coated.
He was in the process of getting KTFO in the first Jones fight,
and James Toney beat him both times by the majority of people's opinions.

The first fight was close, but Griffen clearly was given every conceivable close round, and the 2nd fight was one of the worst decisions of the latter half of the 90's.
Aside from those misconceptions, he was a solid fighter at one time. Elusive and could counter punch very well. Good, but not great.
Griffin gave Jones trouble early in their first fight but Jones seemed to have figured him out by the middle rounds. There is no doubt in my mind that Griffin would have been stopped later in that fight had it not ended with the DQ. He was getting hammered up until that point. Getting massacred in one round in the next fight reinforces my belief.
With that said, Griffin in his hay day was a very good fighter, perhaps even 2nd tier good. His awkward style made him difficult to fight and he was good enough to beat Toney at least once... that's saying something
I heard the two Toney fights were robberies.
I haven't seen them myself, though.
As for the first Jones fight he doesn't deserve any props for that.
Roy Jones gave himself his first loss.
The were both close.
Griffin was pretty effective though, he landed some excellent combinations.
It probably should have been 1-1.

Roy Jones gave himself his first loss.
yea but he gave jones a tough fight in there first, but its still a loss
The awkward way Griffin fought was what gave him a hard time, but enough about that. Truthfully all I know of Griffin is that he won against Jones by DQ and then he got KTFO by Jones months later..
LOL Just LOL about the 2nd part. He only won because Jones hit Griffin when he was down, but man was he destroyed in their second fight. Didn't he fight Tarver??
