I think he is a very well rounded fighter and his jab was excellent tonight. He's certainly going to be a major player at 154 and 160 in the coming years. The only real flaw I saw in this fight tonight is the point the ESPN crew touched on a couple of times. Alcine is too "offense/defense" sometimes and he needs to learn to make smoother transitions while mixing up his attack.
Ice, should Alcine challenge your man Rivera for his title, what things would you work on to get the edge on Alcine? How would you attack a rather well balanced fighter like this? Any thoughts you can share are appreciated. Thanks.
What is the general consensus on Alcine though? I like his style. I had only seen him against Daniels before so this reinforced my support for him.
I seriously hope that Alcine wins his upcoming title fight so that he can become an international star. One thing that I hate about boxing is all the politics that goes on behind the scene. A guy like Alcine would have had a title shot a LONG time ago if he was American. At least in MMA, they don't care where guys are from, it's really about skills. I mean look at Georges St-Pierre.
ALSO. To be clear. We study other fighters etc and come up with fight plans etc but it isn't like it is always a huge difference in previous strategies. Just subtle changes that can make a big difference. Like when Jose beat Garcia on May 6... I watched the tape and I picked out just two or three thigns that I thought Jose could take advantage of and we worked on them but it probably wasnt a thing where people that saw Jose fight before even really noticed that he was doing some things a little bit differently, u know?

What you have to understand is.. boxing is a very technical game but at the same time it is a very simple game. Jose is a long time veteran who does what he does..... things we might do differently to fight against Alcine may not even be visible to the untrained eye. Alcine doesnt appear to me to be a Roy Jones, Floyd Mayweather, Naseem hamed type of guy so it isn't going to take genius in the area of strategy to figure out the way to beat him.
Well, to tell u the truth, I only saw the last round of the fight last night and I didn't know what one was Alcine until the fight was over. We will just watch the videos of Alcines fights with Jose if and when an Alcine-Rivera fight comes off and make our plans from there. Either way, though, its not like there are a million different things that need to be done to fight most guys. We will be in AWESOME condition, we will be technically sound and take it from there. The VERY interesting intangible about such a fight is one that shows how small the boxing world really is. Otis and Howard Grant train Alcine and I train Jose. In 1988 I went to Montreal and fought Otis in an international duel meet and then when we all turned pro Otis and Howard came down to Hartford and fought on several of the cards I headlined. Then I went to Montreal and England with Otis (and Howard) many times to spar with him for many of his biggest fights. THEN, my last pro fight in 2001 was promoted by a group whose contact that got me on the show was... Otis Grant (he was part of the team that promoted the fight). So it would be very odd to now after all these years be working against each other like this. But that's the game
Thanks for the input. So you don't know much about Alcine yet then? It's interesting that you say there aren't a million different things that need to be done to fight most guys. I'd figure that there are quite a few things that trainers focus on after watching tape of a challenger. How to attack, positioning in the ring, what to watch out for defensively (and all of the sub-points in those categories).
Since you haven't seen him fight a lot then obviously it's tough for you to point out weaknesses in his game that Rivera could exploit. I appreciate the response though ICE.

Scully has great insight at times about the sport in general, BUT I feel Scully, too often takes the politically correct road. Especially when it comes to matchups.
The reason for that is because he knows alot of the fighters and don't want to rub anyone the wrong way.
I just wanted his input because Alcine is now in line to fight his champion in Rivera. I think he might give us a preview as to how Rivera would fight the balanced Alcine should the fight come off.
I fell asleep halfway through the fight but for what I did see I was fairly impressed. The guy has a real chance of making some noise. I definitely did notice the problem of offense/defense too often, but that also might've been part of facing Mamani since he seemed so aggressive with his pretty fast hands at times. Perhaps just too overly cautious on not trying to get caught.
Also, definitely looking forward to seeing him again.... and the rest of the fight if I can find a replay on.
I wouldn't call him a prospect anymore. He's a bonafide contender at this point...seeing as how he's in line for a title fight soon. I wasn't impressed with Pascal. I don't like his demeanor in the ring and his skills aren't as stunning as I would have imagined.
Bute looks pretty solid, but he hasn't really fought anyone outside of an ordinary Salem.
fights alot like a young tyson , great style great jab, does not need a better transtion from offense to defense, need no transition the key is to do both at the same time, he can be a champion
