They weren't rumours??? Why do you say that, were you there to see this taking place? Rumours are something that there is not 100% evidence of IMO. I can well believe these rumours, but unless i know 100% differently i'll always call a rumour a rumour. What i do know 100% is that McClellan was an exceptional fighter with the potential to be a great and is missed by myself as a boxer. they aren't rumors. he fed other dogs to his dog, when his dog lost and was all hurt with a ripped up neck he capped his own dog. that's about all I know he did...maybe there's more, i know he used to watch tapes of dogs getting eaten by other dogs before fights and shit, and that's weird...but yeah, as a dog lover, i can say I respect G-man as a fighter, but prime roy would have dominated him
Manny Steward will tell you that McClellan takes Jones in two rounds, and basically says that it would of been an easy fight!
Manny Steward also said that he actually gives Taylor a chance to beat Winky after he found out that he'd be training Jermain.
I wouldn't go that far. He was a hell of a fighter, though.
With his kind of talent, he had the POTENTIAL to become that. All that matered was his mental state.
McClellan.
Gerald McClellan's private life isn't really the issue. I'm far more interested in Gerald McClellan and the potential he had as a boxer. There are numerous rumours regarding McClellan's activities outside the ring but that's exactly what they are... 'Rumours!'
If people believe the rumours that doesn't give them the right to claim that Gerald McClellan deserves the terrible injuries that he suffered against Benn because that is a twisted way of thinking IMO.
Stories claim that McClellan purchased a pup and taped it's mouth shut in order to let one of his pit bull terriers kill it. When questioned on why he felt the need to tape the pup's mouth shut McClellan is rumoured to have said that just like he, his pit bull terriers needed sparring practice, and in order not to risk his dogs getting cut he would tape a dogs mouth shut before putting it in against his dog.
There are other stories including this one, some revealed by Gerald's so called friends and his trainer for the Nigel Benn fight, Stan Johnson.
Again, i don't dwell on the rumours surrounding Gerald's private life and tend to look at what he did inside the ring. (Let's not forget, boxing has plenty of nasty characters attached to it, sometimes that's the nature of the business). Some have said that McClellan wouldn't have beat Roy Jones as a professional, i disagree. I think he had all the right attributes to have beaten Roy Jones but i think he made a major mistake in parting company with Manny Steward.
I take nothing away from Nigel Benn but McClellan had no plan B for that fight when he didn't knock Benn out early, as was widely expected. Simply put, he gave Benn license to get back into the fight, although Benn sustained and withstood some viscious punishment McClellan could have changed tact a little, he didn't because he had become a one dimensional fighter by the time he fought Benn, and was poorly advised by his corner and 'head trainer/yes-man' Stan Johnson who is Amateur at best.
That said, i don't go along with the people who say that Benn was aided back into the ring when he was knocked out of it in the first round, he wasn't. The people at ringside put out their hands but they certainly never pushed Benn back into the ring, Benn clambered back to his feet unaided and deserves as much credit for that as he does the victory. However, i do believe that the totally inept French referee (who never spoke a word of english) seemed to give Benn too much time to recover from the knock down, and at one point he actually pushed McClellan back forcing McClellan to wave his glove as if to say 'Get out my way and let me get the job done!' IMO Benn should have received a caution for ducking so low below the waistline throughout the fight, he didn't because, unfortunately, one of the greatest fights ever seen on british soil was refereed by one of the worst referees i've ever seen.
However, my admiration for Benn grew after the fight because he put up an unbelievably courageous display and won a fight that hardly anyone (including myself) gave him a chance of winning. McClellan was seemingly stuggling to breathe a couple of rounds into the fight because he was pushing his gumshield out of his mouth and though this is not uncommon, it is not usual for McClellan to do this. After the two fighters clashed heads McClellan began blinking manically but of-course no one was to know what would happen and it is a very tragic loss of a fighter i believe had the potential to become a great. Despite the tragic circumstances i still love to watch this fight as i do the collection of Gerald McClellan fights that i have.
Ironically, Don King was rumoured to have said, 'He quit like a dog!' as McClellan lay in a coma. Like i've stated, boxing has plenty of nasty characters attached to it.
he enojyed dog fights, and would buy dogs to let his fighitng dog kill. hed time how fast it took for his dog to kill another muzzled dog.
he is a little crazy
Dude dont take away my freedom of speech im sure i can say the same to you about thing about some of your views on life....but its my opinion big deal he never ever ever would have beaten Roy Jones and no one can argue that.

HAHAHA if this guy was that good he never would have gotten destroyed by Benn...and becoming a vegetable is getting your ass kicked no matter how close it was.He was a scum bag that will always be rememberd as the guy that got brain damaged by taking an ass kicking by Benn.He would have gotten quadruple worse brain damage if hed of fought bob foster,Ezzard charles or any of the all time great light heavyweights....and to put him in the category of Roy Jones..hahahahahahahah

You are aware that McClellan beat the shit out of Jones right prior to the Olympics arn't you? McClellan just fell in love with slugfests and his power to much. That is why he got hurt. Also I hope you never become a judge or something with the idea that you ought to be sentenced to death for being a patron of dog fighting. I like dogs and sure its a terrible thing but to say that somebody deserves to become a vegetable for it is a little wierd to say the least.
guy had the heart of a lion, and the punch of a monster. of his 29 KOs, 20 were in the 1st. the guy had incredible power and the numbers to go along with it.
its a damn shame he ended up blind, nearly deaf, and crippled.
