Rafael's remark: If there was ever a fight that could have gone either way, this was it. If there was ever a fight that illustrated the need for the return to 15-round fights in certain instances, this was it. Those last three rounds probably would have made a huge difference. Alas, we're stuck with this exciting 12-rounder to judge. Let the debate rage. If you like the busier and much heavier puncher, Taylor was your man. Every time he landed, which was often, he moved Wright with the blows. If you like the more accurate fighter with the quicker hands and better defense, Wright was your man. The judges obviously couldn't agree. And on press row, the scores were also all over the place, as much as for any big fight we have ever covered.
Bottom line: It was a close fight, not a robbery as Wright and promoter Gary Shaw cried. Wright's disappointment is understandable, but he showed a lack of professionalism by dissing HBO in the ring after the fight and by dissing the media at the postfight news conference, as if we were the ones who turned in the official scorecards. That's a pretty lame move for a guy who wants a future as a promoter. Perhaps someday there will be a rematch, and there should be. But for the time being, these guys need to go their separate ways. Taylor deserves his Little Rock, Ark., homecoming fight this fall after fighting three massive bouts in a row (two with Bernard Hopkins and then with Wright). For Wright, there are other good fights for him besides another match with Taylor, which would probably be just as close the next time around.
And now a word about the promotion: This fight was one of the biggest and most important of the year, but it sure wasn't treated that way by organizers, as the arena sat almost half empty on fight night. What a disgrace. The reason was not, however, because fans didn't want to come. It's because the tickets were so grossly overpriced that few wanted to spend so much money for such crappy seats. Who is going to pay $1,000 or $750 to have a seat in a corner or not even on the floor, especially when the fight is free on HBO and the undercard is filled with one blatant mismatch after another?
That is true. Winky is not accepting a rematch for a reason. He knows how hard Taylor hits. And if they were to meet up in the ring again Taylor would win. The Vargas fight was closer than this. If they were to fight again Taylor would win via UD and knock Winky down in the process. Belive that.
I agree with everything you said in this post except the decision. I had it a draw and it was close, if you had taylor winning it was a close win, if you had wright winning it was a close win. NO clinic was pulled in this fight by any fighter.
Right on point. A good way to tell whose fans are being bias is the scorecards. Nobody ever claimed Taylor won by more than 7 rounds to 5, yet the Winky fans are trying to say he won 8 or more rounds. It tells you who is biased, and therefore, WHO IS WRONG. A draw is acceptable to me or a Taylor win, but not a Wright win and not by the margin his fans are claiming he won by. Get real, Winky fans. The man doesn't want a rematch for a reason. He's content with the draw and knows he gets dropped and beat up in a rematch. Admit it.
Wright said he's had trouble making 154 for several years. So you can take that up with him.
Wright has been at 160 for 3 fights now, and has looked good just now vs the champ at that weight. He's a middleweight now. He himself believes he has grown out of 154.
Jermain Taylor is not a supermiddle, nor does he belong there. He came into the ring at 170 vs Wright. Wright came in just 4 lbs lighter than that. You know how much Calzaghe probably weighs on fight night? Probably around 180.
only problem with his analysis is taylor doesnt hit as hard as he thinks , hbo has everybody believing taylor is some huge puncher, this whole discussions a joke , winkys not bad im not a winky fan , but in my opinion taylor sucks he looks akward his defense is horrible he was hit so clean how could winky get a draw he never really hit winky clean. taylor has no footwork his just fighting smaller men and has alot of speed, the only real middle wieght he fought was hopkins and all the rest were jr middles and hes at least a super middle if he fought calzage lacy or any of the super middleweight he would get killed
fight news poll has it at 43% for winky and 56% voted a draw or thought taylor won... which means more people thought winky DID NOT WIN than did win...
....and Al Gore won the popular vote in 2000.
So much for polls. :dunno:

So someone's on crack just because they scored it for Taylor? That's an awful lot of people, including about 1/3 of the fans in here according to the poll we had set up. It was about even...1/3 for Taylor, 1/3 for Wright and 1/3 for a draw. It would seem as though you are toking on that pipe there, Raesaad. Stop with all the nonsense.
I scored it 116-114 for Taylor. 6 rounds to 4 with 2 even. Hard fight to score...
I had Taylor winning this fight 115-113, but we all know this fight was close and it could've gone either way.
What's the point of arguing who won this fight, thread after thread about the same shit.
Because people don't know how to read the other threads.. Or use the search button. Im suprised this site hasn't shutdown.. All these threads about the same thing over and over.
Very good commentary, IMO...
Diegofuego...how can ANYONE score it 115-113? HOW THE FCUK DID TAYLOR WIN 7 ROUNDS. I could see a draw because there were tossup rounds, but IMO i had it 116-112 Wright.
I had it 114-114, but I gave Winky a couple rounds that could've gone either way. I could easily see someone having it 115-113 for either guy, or even 116-112 for either fighter... anything beyond that is ridiculous. Think about it, there were at least 4 rounds that could've gone either way. If you gave 2 to Winky, and 2 to Taylor, you've got a draw. If you gave 3 to Taylor, 115-113, and obviously all 4 to Wright, 116-112. No one is really wrong in their opinion, but you can't expect people to all judge those very close rounds exactly the same. I would love to see 15 round championship bouts return, but I fear that boxers would just take more time off between fights, so there will always be pros and cons for both sides of the argument.

Damn son another one who scored it 116-112.. No way Winky was up by that much. You can't just put your hands up and get hit the majority of the fight and expect to win.
The fact that you can't even admit it was a close fight proves you're too biased to discuss the fight. By saying anyone who scores it for Taylor must be on crack, you're suggesting Wright won at least 8 rounds, which he did not. 115-113 Taylor :boxing:
1st time i seen the fight i had it a draw. I watched the replay twice and came out with 115-113. I gave Taylor rounds 9-10 for sure. 9th round being the closest but Taylor got it from me.

You gotta respect Rafael. He's right....and I have to agree. Over the last few days of arguing with various posters over a difference in opinion over the outcome of the fight, here's the conclusion I've come to:
The one and only thing everyone seems to agree on is that there were several very close rounds in the Taylor-Wright fight. Now, depending upon your disposistion and what you're looking for you gave those close rounds to one or the other. If you were impressed moreso with Taylor's power and the way he moved Winky around, even though Winky was blocking most of the shots....more than likely, you gave those rounds to Taylor. If you were watching HBO and bought into it everytime Jim Lamply peed his pants over a Taylor flurry....more than likely, you gave those rounds to Taylor. If you were looking for clean punches landed, ring generalship & defense...you gave those rounds to Wright. Because of those close rounds and the desparity in public perception this fight could have been scored anywhere from a narrow victory for Taylor to a relatively easy win for Wright. So, the draw is logical, even though I wholeheartedly believe Wnky won the fight.
