Just watched the Jirov Toney fight! What a fight! :D Toney really had to dig deep in that last 40 seconds.
Does anyone know the official scoring, and if that knockdown pulled out the win for him? Most of all whats happening with Jirov nowadays? He took a lot of punishment in that fight! But what a heart :boxing:
James Toney won that fight by a comfortable margin. It was one of those grueling fights where some round were semi tough to score, but if you score then clean punches that are landing HARDER then you had to give Toney at LEAST 7 rounds. I thought Toney just did an absolute job on Jirov, dismantling him from the very start of the fight. 116-110 Toney was the correct score in my opinion.
Funniest thing about that fight being Harold Lederman giving Jirov the 6th round. A round where Toney was practically landing at will and was toying with Jirov.
I agree with whoever said that should have been fight of the year in 2003. Both Toney and Jirov are better fighters than Gatti and Ward in every facet of the game and they put on a much better, much more dramatic show that night. The 12th round was easily one of the best final rounds in a fight ever. If you don't believe me all you had to do was listen to Emmanuel Steward. He was practically screaming.
You must admit those left hooks Toney was landing in the last round were classic. Just imagine if he realised this was the way to hurt Jirov on the blind side earlier in the fight :boxing:
It's amazing how so many people thought Toney-Jirov was a close fight. If you didn't think Toney won that fight easily, I have to say you suck at scoring fights. All pretty close rounds, but you don't just pick a few rounds and start giving them to Jirov because the fight looks close. Toney dominated that fight in terms of rounds, but Jirov made most rounds real close. I had it 116-111 for Toney.
So, everyone but you says that it's a close fight, and WE suck at scoring fights? Maybe you should rethink your argument..
Also, I firmly believe that the Toney - Jirov fight should have been FOY that year. The Gatti - Ward trilogy was garbage in my opinion. I'd much rather watch two talented boxers fight each other than two journeymen.

I saw that fight when the replayed it before the Toney/Rahman fight, It was one of the best fight I've ever seen, non stop action, but I've got a few questions. What year was the Toney Jirov fight? was it fight of the year(in my opinion, it should have been) & if it wasn't which was the fight of the year that year?
It was in 2003, when Ward v Gatti III won FOTY.
That one wasnt as good though, they probably should have given the nod to Toney v Jirov.

Last i remember he knocked down Mesi 3 times and still lost if thats not a roberry then what is?
Well Jirov only won three rounds in the fight so no, it isn't a robbery. Learn how to score fights, k?
Oh..... My......god. What the fuck fight were they watching  ? I scored it 115-113 Toney ;)
The judges scores were completely asinine in that fight. It was razor close. I actually forget how I scored it, but I remember it being close and asking myself what fight the judges were watching when they announced the scores.
It was a close fight, but with the KD in the 12th, and the point deduction in the 8th, i scored it 115-112. If my memory serves me correct, Jirov came on towards the end of the 12th and made it a 10-9 round.
It doesn't. He was knocked down with 17 seconds left in the round.

if anyone actually saw jirov toney you'd see that you have to land to score points....
my 13 year old cousin said this and he dosnt even pay attention to boxing we were watching it before the toney rahman fight came on and he after about 6 rounds he said " that white dudes getting his ass tore up he isnt even hitting toney ..everytime he swings toney ducks and moves around then hits him 3 or 4 times "
if a 13 year old can get it right surely you guys can ...116-111 for toney at worst ...
AHHHH what a fucking dummy what was I thinking.....Yeah I thought it was alot closer too.
Yeah, thats who i ment.
That has brawl/FOTY written all over it.

So did I, and most people did from what I've read. I don't think anyone disagrees with Toney having won the fight, just the margin he won it by. I don't remember my score, but I'm fairly certain the KD is what won Toney the fight on my card. I think I had Jirov ahead going into the 12th.
He needs to get back down to CW to be effective.
The official scores for Jirov/Toney were 117-109 twice and 116-110.

Yeah, but Toney severly lacks discipline, and maybe Jiriov does too.
Id like to see him fight JMM at cruiser.
Itd be a must win for both of them.
Pardon me but who is JMM do you mean Juan Carlos Gomez?
No shit......he was very good at Cruiser,Toney and Jirov should both have stayed at CW.
