Calzaghe sends a Plea to Bernard Hopkins
By DHB (June 19, 2006) Peter Shuttleworth of The Wales on Sunday has reported that Joe Calzaghe has made an impassioned plea to Bernard Hopkins for 'one last dance' . Hopkins has plans to retire after beating Antonio Tarver two weekends' ago in dominating fashion. However Calzaghe doesn't want Hopkins to retire just yet.
But British boxing superstar Calzaghe has urged American great Hopkins (below) - the newly-crowned IBO and NBA
light-heavyweight champ - to delay his retirement and fight the Welsh hero "whenever and wherever" for the "sake of fight fans everywhere in the world."
Calzaghe is quote in The Wales on Sunday saying:: "It'd be the punch-up every boxing lover in the world would want to see. People would be queuing around the block to get their hands on tickets as it has all the ingredients to be an absolute classic. Hopkins is tremendously fit, a great counter-puncher, with a good chin but I'm powerful with fast hands and the style to expose him.'
Calzaghe added: "It would be one of the most anticipated fights for ages. It wouldn't just be Calzaghe v Hopkins but Britain versus the Yanks - them against us.Hopkins and I are the two best pound-for-pound fighters in the world and it'd be a travesty that my new-found status with American TV couldn't get me the fight of my life.
Calzaghe denies his motivation to fight Hopkins is for the Money, saying: "It's not all about money, though, it's the respect of beating a legend like Hopkins. But I won't deny the cash would come in handy."

i think anthony mundine would give him a good fight too
the rugby player? heh heh heh. I know the Kesslerphiles are trying to make it sound like Mundine is actually a credible boxer but seriously ....
The Danes almost make me wish Calzaghe forgot about his legacy and fighting the Taylors and Hopkins' of this world and knocked out another Euro.
cause his scared

"Joe’s ultimate goal is to unify all the Super Middle Weight titles and become a 2 weight world champion, only time will tell if he achieves his goals"
Well - Joe, a shot at your "ultimate goal" was right there in front of you, but you didn't want it. What a load of crap.
So now that life-long goal is no longer his goal.

Considering how insanely busy Calzaghe must be with his manic schedule of calling out retired ex-champions, talking straight out of his ass about a possible U.S. debut, and having Frank Warren's dick in his mouth for 6 hours every day, I'm surprised the man can even find enough time to train and get in the ring.
It's not worth it Hopkins should stay retired.Calzaghe vs. Kessler is the best fight out there for him.Maybe Glen Johnson at 175.
If Calzaghe fought Kessler it will be the end of Calzaghe career,so the fight would not happen
The reason Hops looked dominant vs Tarver is simple. Hops did not have to drain to make weight, and had the speed advantage over Tarver, who had to come down in weight.
Hopkins is most certainly past his prime. In his prime, he'd have defeated Taylor by TKO. He still has enough in the tank to give Joe a good fight, but he'd lose. He was not very active vs Tarver even...and he'd just be that much older by the time the Calzaghe fight rolled around.
I dunno if he would have stopped Taylor in his prime, because he normally systematiclly broke down his opponents, which i dont think he could have done agasint a young, strong, busy guy like Taylor.

What we have learned is that NOBODY, no matter who you are, walks through Bernard Hopkins.
Its pretty much impossible.
At this point, i could see it going something like Jones v Hopkins, but i woulnt bet against Hopkins.
if thats the case -which you may be right- then hopkins should stay retired
I think Bernard should just enjoy what he's made thus far and revel in the fact that his legacy in this sport will be here long after he's gone from this earth. What he's accomplished in his career speaks volumes.
If he wants to fight Calzaghe he will, if he doesn't he won't. I just don't want to see anybody say he ducked Calzaghe when clearly he's been wanting to retire for over a year now.
I won't get into my debating the Taylor Hopkins outcomes, that's been played out. However I will say that Hopkins still looked fresh in those fights and definately had his moments. Especially now looking at his performance, or dominance should I say, over Antonio Tarver.
Hopkins is a freak. He's managed to stay ontop well past the age that most fighters fall off the wagon. I don't think Joe would walk through Hopkins like some of Calzaghe's fans would like me to believe.

I actually think Hopkins is in his prime right now. For how much longer is the question. Father time has yet to catch "The Executioner" but it will eventually. The smart thing to do would be stayed retired. However I think if Hopkins fought Calzaghe this year Hopkins would win.
He still lost 2 straight to Jermian Taylor.
Dispute the first all you want, but youve got to fight 12 rounds.
I thought the second was much more clear.
