That wouldnt work. What do you do with the fans?
A day before allows for an announcment that the fight is off etc etc...
Its all business.
An altenative could be to have more than one weigh in. Say three one a week before another 3 days before and last one day before and you should make weight within 1-2 pounds on the first two. By having more weigh ins it would also make it impossible to gain and lose so much weight since you would have to do it several times during one week and it would simply mess you up if you tried.
WEigh ins should be JUST before the fight. half an hout before. It's ridiculous.

Just out of curiousity, How do you lose & gain 21 pounds of water weight in 24 hours or so? I've never seen this Gatti fight, but how is that possible?
The entire incident with Gatti vs Gamache is that might have never even made weight. Therefore it wasn't a huge weigh gain, it was actually never making weight.
The suits allege Russo let Gatti step off the scale even as the needle went all the way up, and then ignored complaints by Gamache's handlers. Less than 24 hours later, HBO unofficially weighed the boxers again, and Gatti came in at 160 pounds, while Gamache weighed 145.
"No human being puts on 10 pounds of muscle overnight. It's supposed to be a fair fight, and that's not a fair fight," said Coyle. He has the weigh-in videotape, he said.
All you can gain after a weigh-in is water weight from rehydrating. You dont put on any muscle.
There should be some sort of stipulation on weight gain after the weigh-in. You're supposed to be fighting at 147, not 168 when you're a welterweight.

WEigh ins should be JUST before the fight. half an hout before. Then give fighter's half an hour in the gym and out they come. This weight draining weight gaining business is bad for the sport and endangers boxer's health(s?).
No difference if Castillo and Coralles both weighed in at 140 and fought as welterweights - their weighing that anyways, so why not make it official? Some fighters have a large advantage in tha they can lose a lot and regain a lot of weight. It's ridiculous.
.
It think the weigh in should be closer to fighting time so you do not see these great differences in weight from the weigh in to fighting time. Fighters would quickly find out that they cannot drain themselves so much if they have to fight in a few hours.
I disagree, I think that if a fighter works hard enough and is disciplined enough to make the weight then he has achieved the fights mandatory requirement, therefore if he then puts the weight back onto fight good on him.
It works both ways, how many fighters have lost the weight only to fade due to weight drain or in some cases collapse due to sudden weight loss.
If they are committed enough to make the weight they then should be allowed to get into the best shape to fight by fuelling up ready for the bout IMO.
gamache never had a great chin, that man got up after he got knocked down, their was no fear in him untill he got humiliated in his mind by gatti.
i think i've read the the wba only allows it fighters to gain 10 pounds after the weigh in

yah, Gatti looked enormous in that fight. Wieght stipulations should not exceed 10 - 12lbs IMO. Anymore than that and it is basically attempted murder.
Ok if their is no rule about the amount he gained Gatti didnt cheat if gatti apparently didnt make the weight Gamache had every right to decline end of story to all the haters
Poor guy though huh. Gatti nearly decapitated him.
