...more shot than he really was going into the 2nd Antonio Tarver fight.
Nothing any one of you say can change my mind.
I don't give a fuck...that's my opinion.
The muscle loss thing, I kind of believe, but let's stop making less of Tarver's brutal knockout on Roy Jones Jr.
People always talk about somebody being finished after they lose or have a close fight they should've dominated in. I admit, I'm even guilty for doing that sometimes...but Roy wasn't as shot as some people think.
If Roy Jones Jr. wins his next fight in an impressive fashion, you can bet motherfuckers are going to be making threads asking, "Was Roy really shot?"
roy isnt as shot as people are saying he is but when you lose all that weight in only a few months it takes a tole on you. tarver knew what he was doing. and i love how all you tarver lovers keep bringing up the roy KO of what almost 2 years ago. he got the crap kicked out of him by hops. just give hops the credit. in the 3rd fight RJJ wasnt scared to get KOed. when he opened up he messed tarver up. tarver did not want to mix with RJJ. that fight was just to prove that after 2 KO's he could go 12 rounds without getting KOed. this fight in july will tell us if roy is still a contender or maybe just out for old number 50. he wins this fight. look for him to try and take the winner of woods johnson fight if that goes on. or look for tarver to think he can get an easy win. bc we all know tarver has to start talking about how he beat RJJ since he cant talk about how he got beat by hops.
If he wasn't shot on the first fight he sure was of the KO. He dominated a bigger and stronger Ruiz (I know he's garbage) but after the KO of Tarver, he was scared to throw punches in the Glen fight and Tarver fight. Why doesn't he fight Glen for the rematch?

I agree Roy was not shot but it was a good excuse for all of his fans since nobody had seen him get KTFO like that.
i dont think he was "shot" but i also dont think he was even close to at his best ..at any other time Roy would have done to Tarver what Hopkins just did ....and where are all the "is Tarver shot" threads at ?
i think tarver would have given a prime roy problems too... i think tarver himself and his style had just as much to do with it as roy's faded reflexes... i wont go so far as to say AT would have beaten a prime roy, but he would have still gave him a tough fight..
He's not completely shot, but it looks(in the 3rd Tarver fight) he is afraid to get hit or KTFO again. I don't think him and Hopkins is worth it since B-Hop is probably very confident now.
if jones wouldnt have changed after the mccellen incident who knows how good he couldve been,he was a physical freak,if he works hard enough and gets a jab he could be unbeatable again, he doesnt turn his jab over tho or his right hand really, he might be fighting backwards maybe hes supposed to be a southpaw he looks akward when he moves

Losing muscle mass permanently affects your stamina and athletic abilities. Other effects it has or might have are still being studied. I know a guy way younger than Roy who lost 15 lbs and was already solid muscle...and he was also never the same. His body was never able to respond as quickly or as often as he wanted it to.
You're kidding yourself in you think Roy was the same.
He won't beat down Ajamu. He might win, but it won't be any knd of prime-looking Roy. You'll see.
Tarver's KO was brutal...a brutal thing that probably would've never happened to a prime Roy. Roy was noticeably more hittable vs Woods even before he went to heavyweight. It makes it pretty easy to dismis Tarver given what he suffered vs Hopkins, Glen Johnson, and Roy in the 1st fight.
That's why he fought Tarver last, right Champ?
Go ahead and talk about how he fought scared. That way I can point out what a BITCH Tarver looked like in the Hopkins fight.
Funny how you didn't have a whole lot to say about that.
He won't say shit about things when your right, but he'll talk all the shit he wants.
Jones is a scared fighter now who won't take on anybody who could potentially KO him.

Roy isn't shot so much as exposed. I'll give you the weight loss thing on the first Tarver fight, but the second fight Tarver simply knocked the fight out of Jones. Jones is a scared fighter now who won't take on anybody who could potentially KO him. Believe that. He just wants 50 wins and out.
I would seriously give you hell if you lived in the same city as me..you always have it out for Roy. besides Tarver's knockout was a lucky one in my opinion. He had his eyes closed, where's your proof of Jones being a scared fighter and won't take on anyone who could potentially KO him? The man he's about to fight in Idaho has more then half of his wins by KO and you wanna talk shit like he wants his 50 and get out. Roy's gonna be back and you'll know it when he steps in the ring to shut people like you and others the fuck up.

after da 2nd Tarver fight (and to sum extent da 1st tarver fight) RJJ didnt all of a sudden lose all his skills, all his speed or his reflexes, he LOST ALL his CONFIDENCE!
dats hard to regain! dats why he'l never be da fighter he once was!

The answer?
Yes.
Yes he was.
He showed signs of ageing in the first tarver fight, and i wasnt sure if his career was ending or not.
After the Tarver fight, it was apparent he was done.
The Johnson fight and final tarver fight are clear evidence of that.

So would all of you say Roy lacks the heart or was he just a cautious fighter and is now even moreso cautious after being KO'd?
I think it's a little bit of both. I mean, he obviously was always a cautious fighter and was more than comfortable with the fight going to the cards instead of taking KOs when they were there, but in the third Tarver fight he showed competitiveness at times (in a way that suggests he isn't shot), but on the negative side, he showed a gunshy side that made him look like a coward.
I think it's a matter of him being unable to re-invent himself at 37.
His faculties are faded, his confidence is shot, and that's an uphill battle for somone who (earlier in his career) had a skill set that allowed him to coast through championship callibur fights on auto pilot.
He shouldn't even be fighting anymore imo. Nothing left to prove or gain.
Yeah but Roy was no where near as shot as Leonard was is the Norris fight or Ali was in the Holmes fight. He slowed down, yes, but he wasn't shot.
That's how I see it.
Yes, Roy still had very good reflexes and speed but Roy lost that super speed and reflexes he had earlier in his career especially before moving to heavyweight.
Roy doesn't really matchup with those comparisons. The reason is because Roy wasn't a technical fighter. His style was original and unorthodox and totally based on his reflexes. Once Roy lost those tools he couldn't use his style was virtually useless and Roy didn't have the technical abilities to fall back on that like Ali, Leonard, Hopkins or even James Toney.
All those guys were able to beat opponents earlier in there career based on pure physical talent but they had technical abilites that allowed them to win later in there career.
A modern equivalent would be Jermaine Taylor who has been able to beat opponents with great physical talents but limited technical ability. Taylors true legacy will be cemented later in his career when he has/or hasn't evolved into a technical fighter that can defeat the younger stronger opponents that he will face in the twilight of his career.
So for Roy and his style, YES he was a shot fighter.
