In an interview conducted by Dan Rafael of ESPN.com, Oscar De La Hoya gave him a few good reasons why retirement might be a good idea. Rafael got Oscar to list his injuries. Suprisingly, Oscar held nothing back and gave ESPN a run down of his ailments.
Oscar tells ESPN: "I felt more pains in the Mayorga training camp than any other training camp ever."
The details of his problems (As listed by ESPN):
• "My left rotator cuff is torn. I've lived with it with for the last 4-5 years. When I sleep at night, to this day, I wake up and it's uncomfortable. It hurts. It's in pain."
• "My hand. I am tired of getting shots on my hand to numb it so I won't feel the pain. I'm tired of it."
• "My elbows. I have arthritis in both elbows. I get shots. It sucks. It really does."
• "My back flares up."
• "This knuckle still hasn't gone down since the Mayorga fight. I'm thinking it's broken. I touch it and it hurts. It's been like this for two months, since the middle of training camp."
Sounds like Oscar is going to hang it up... What do you guys think?
lmao. After two months you might want to get that looked at Oscar...
lmao, good point! he says "I think its broken, its been like this for two months". Ever heard of an X-ray Oscar?
Also, if Oscar beats Mayweather = Huge
If Oscar loses but gives a great account of himself in the fight = Great.
If he loses badly = "he was over-the-hill anyway" and it wont deminish his career much.
I think it's not yet the time to say the reqiem on the prospect of Oscar-PBF. Champions have huge egos and champs who are stars have even bigger ones.
Oscar has just seen what his partner Bernard has accomplished. I am enclined to believe that Oscar's ego won't allow him to forego the opportunity to close his career in a fashion that may or may not be considered as similar to that of Hopkins, but, surely, one that shall be considered distinguished. Only a meeting with Mayweather offers that opportunity. No cap can be better for Oscar's career than beating the fighter who is at the top of most P4P lists (if he gets to do it). Exiting with a win over Mayorga cannot compare with that.
This is a clever move by Oscar. He has always done this same thing... For the Hopkins fight, he said that Hopkins was the tallest mountain to climb and it was a huge mountain at that...and its a monumental opportunity, etc. He was pretty much setting himself up as a kind of under-dog... to make his attempt to climb the mountain look better, and make him look good win or lose.
Its the same thing with these injuries... If he takes the fight, it will be seen as a very gutsy move, and he will get much credit for simply accepting the fight, and will be praised win or lose for attempting to climb yet another great mountain. DLH has always been a clever guy... ;)
Forcing the action doesn't make a guy win the fight, if that was the case a guy like Whitaker lost all of his fights, guess what Whitaker is one of the greatest fighters of all time.
You must be one of the few people that thought Delahoya won that fight.
he was landing punchs, after punchs on sturm, it was an exciting fight because delahoya was always on the attack
Dude, that fight was not even close, Sturm clearly was robbed! That's what I call a robbery, not close fights like Barrera/Rocky.
delahoya threw a bunch of punchs in combos, how can sturm win with just a jab and to top it off he was back pedaling, delalhoya forced the action
I think its a great move that delahoya retire. He has nothing more to prove and a win over mayweather who is un-proven at 147 means nothing.
He has his health, his has money, a beautifull wife and has a family.
Theirs no need for him to enter the ring again, his legacy is secured!
agree with you at least now he is retired as a champion
What in my eyes?? Losing the Sturm fight or me not having any interest for this fight???
losing the sturm fight. sturm fucked up, it was his fight to win but delahoya out worked him especially in the later rounds and championship rounds
Does PBF really needs Oscar??? The only reason he want to fight is for the big money. I personally could careless for this fight. Beating Mayorga doesn't prove shit, what Hopkins did was big. I would've respected Oscar more if you would've given Sturm a rematch, because he lost that fight by a pretty big margin in most peoples eyes.
no just in your eyes
de la hoya is exgarating..especially with the last 4 or 5 years torn rotator cuff..if he did he woudlnt be able to throw punches like he does
it kind of makes sense, especially since the last time we seen him really use the left hook was against mayorga, back in the day, delahoyas left hook was one of his main punchs and a powerfull one. I always wondered why he hardly threw the left hook and now i know.
This is a whole load of crap. Dont fall for it. Oscar may be hurt but I doubt it is to this extent. If I was Floyd I'd get the trash talking going to motivate this guy to get in there and fuk him up. Oscar is really smart...I give him that. This is bullshit.

How old is this article ? If this is true then this sucks big time. It doesnt do anything for his legacy ending on the Mayorga fight. Take this fight OSCAR !!! dammit...what a joke.
I dunno ? I dont believe this shit. Sounds like a bunch of excuses to me. Whatever...
I think in the long run the risk is much bigger than the reward. He could of course lose and if he wins? Does it mean that much? He said clearly the fight will be at 154 if they fight, Floyd hasnt even fought a true welter yet let alone a true light middleweight. If they were to fight Id love to see it at 147 and thats it.
It's not like it has been any secret with Oscar's injuries; trainers that have worked with Oscar have discussed what Oscar goes through in training camp, usually fighting through injuries for the sake of the fight.
The guy is in his 30's and his body is falling a part...just look at Kostya Tszyu, another guy who punishes himself in training camp, but in the end, his body failed; though some of it had to do with trying to continue to make weight.
