This may be old news and rather trivial but I want to see if anyone else agrees with me here because the issue has come up at my gym a lot and tend to argue about this with my fellow stablemates. Had Ricardo Mayorga fought Oscar Delahoya before fighting Felix Trinidad he might have been able to put on a better fight rather than the onesided beating OScar gave him. My question is, How does Mayorga stick his chin out at Tito and get hit... not once but twice and does not flinch , continues to take a beating for 8 rounds before getting TKO'd ? Then he fights Oscar who doesnt hit half as hard as Felix Trinidad who floors him with his first left hook that connects , and continues a one sided beating that looked more impressive than Tito's for 6 rounds. I dont give a flying fuck about Ricardo Mayorga. I just want to know if some of you agree with me when I say he wasn't the same fighter coming into this fight with Delahoya than he did with Trinidad. We all know that after a war with Trinidad you dont come out the same ( eg: Vargas , David Reid ). Again, I dont give a flying fuck ass about Mayorga but I was really hoping he would be the first guy to at least have Delahoya seriously hurt on the canvas but after wathching that fight and seeing how every Delahoya punch wobbled him leads me to believe that Mayorgas chin wasn't quite the same entering that fight. Hey , we all know that Oscar doesnt carry the power at 154 than he did at 147 but Mayorga is a thick guy who is well suited at Junior Middle.
I think Trinidad had him hurt as early as the first round. The two differences were DLH was throwing more shots to the body, and his defence was better. Trinidad hurt Mayorga every time he threw shots to the body, but for some reason he didn't do it often. Trinidad was also trading more, so Mayorga was throwing more, but Mayorga got hurt near the end of the 1st and was just hanging in. I think Mayorga just didn't know how to deal with DLH speed or defence, so he was backing up and wasn't throwing shots. Trinidad could have taken out Mayorga very very early if he would have thrown more body shots.
I dont remember if Tito had him hurt early in the first...I honestly dont remember that but you may be right. I also thought Trinidad threw just as many body shots as Oscar. Trinidad's style may have suited Mayorga more to make him look better but the fact remains he took more punishment whether head or body shots in that fight with Tito. I also felt DLH fought the same way as Tito just throwing less, but Mayorgas chin just looked like it coudn't take a shot like it use too cuz no matter what he said after the fight... DLH doesnt hit as hard as Tito.
Yes, I agree, Mayo would of put up a much better fight if he had not fought Tito before Oscar. Its not a myth Tito does take years off of fighters, it started with Campas the dude was like 60-0 when we fought Tito then after Tito almost took his head off he was done, Carr was like 40-0, Vargas was a beast until he fought Trinidad, after he fought Tito Wilfredo Rivera droped him I mean come on, those beating will take there toll on a fighter, Im sure Oscar new that not that Mayo would beat Oscar but it would of been a much better fight. Campas, Carr, Ried, Joppy, Vargas, Mayorga all had there carreers cut short due to the beatings they took from Tito.
Excatly my point. I'm trying to hate on Delahoya here but the guy knows how to choose opponents and WHEN to fight them which makes him look better come fight time. We didn't excatly see Mayorga stick out his chin for Delahoya did we ? Will all that smack talk and shit about his family and wife you woulda thought Mayorga would have played cocky and overconfident in the ring.

My thoughts exactly, Mayorga's defense has alway been his chin, he's a street fighter, he doesnt believe in keeping his hands up(which is what his coner was telling him the whole fight), but IMHO if he hadn't just stood there and gotten his head pounded by Tito he would have lasted longer in this fight. Also he might train real hard but the fool would smoke 3 times a day(and like Sterward said it might not have been all tobacco). It's also true that Mayorga cant beat a world class fighter, he's an amateur at best, and not a very good one.
I agree that when you brace for punches you take them better and maybe this had no effect on him but that doesnt justify the fact that Tito bounced Mayorga around from pillar to post and never had him hurt until after the 6th or 7th from what I remember. Against Oscar EVERY punch had him either wobbled or on the defensive unlikey for a guy who prefers to stand in front of you and trade bombs. Not the same looking Mayorga is what I'm trying to say here.

First of all Mayorga would of never had a chance but I do think he would of taken a little more punishment if he had fought Delahoya before fighting Tito.
Delahoya would of still gave him a one sided beating and stopped him because of Mayorga taking too many punches. Like I said anyone who thought Mayorga had a chance against Tito or Delahoya must not of thought much of them as fighters.
Exactly. The punches that Mayorga "takes" is a trick, in a way. I'm sure it hurts like hell, but you can see him rolling his head with the punches as they come in. The DLH punches he did not see at all, and he got floored.

Listen , I agree Mayorga is an unskilled somewhat green journey and he wasn't gonna beat DLH anyway but Tito hits like a heavyweight and whether the sticking out of his chin effected him or not he still took Tito's bombs for 8 rounds a helluva lot better than DLH's punches for 6 rounds and he didnt see Tito's punches coming either. DLH doesnt hit half as hard as Tito yet every punch seemed to put Mayorga on queer street. All I am trying to say is that Tito has damaged Mayorgas ability to take a punch just like he has every other fighter who has stood in the pocket with him and tried to trade.
I think the early knockdown was a punch that Mayorga didn't see at all. It was a combination of being off balance, being hit hard and hit fast. Trinidad landed really hard shots, but I think the one DLH landed was timed and placed perfectly to score a knockdown that didn't necessarily hurt Mayorga too badly, but it ruined his confidence. The reason DLH took Mayorga out earlier was body shots. That last volley that sent Mayorga into the ropes was 8 punches, and it was the 4 body shots that hurt him really bad. Tito would have had him out far earlier than 8 rounds if he'd hit the body more. I don't think Mayorga was ruined so much as DLH fought him a little smarter.
What ruined his chances against putting on a better show against DLH is the fact he is a highly unskilled journeyman.
The sticking your chin out thing is pure BS. Mayroga and any fighter will tell when you can see the punch coming from miles away its gonna be much easier to take it. Thisis what happend with the Tito fight.
He never saw DLH's punches.

if mayo was even good enough to beat DLH in the first place then u can say tito softened mayo up, but he's not so its a mute point DLH > mayo at any time in there career, same goes for carr and vargas DLH woulda beat them anyway

thats a ridiculous excuse. mayorga cant beat world class fighters with good chins period. he's a bum in my book
Dude I didnt say he could beat him. I SAID HE WOULD HAVE PUT UP A BETTER FIGHT , but he is a bum.

Ive said on here before that I think it was a combo of Tito ruining him, his lack of training, and that shit he took before the fight.
If anyone has the fight, then go back and watch it. Those punches Oscar hit him with werent even that hard and a tough guy like Mayorga couldnt take any of them. Those punches didnt seem that hard at all
I think Mayorga was dehydrated as fuck. He took lasix and ballooned to 172lbs fight night. He definintely looked shittier then he ever has. Oh when you said DLH doesnt hit half as Hard ast Tito, Mayorga said that DLH definitely hits HARDER than Tito. It's his word over yours...
Camacho, Whitaker, Vargas and Carr all say that Tito hits harder, so I guess its Their word against Mayorgas.
And yes Mayorga, Vargas, Carr, Reid were all damaged goods after fighting Tito.
