Why do so many people on this forum and fans in general say the same thing. I made this thread because of what people said in the Spinks vs Karmazin thread.
This is boxing guys. Not fighting. If you master the art of boxing then power doesnt mean anything. Its not like Spinks is coming in to Knock you out. He comes in to score points.
You dont need power with Spinks style. Its stupid for people to keep saying things like that. Have you ever even watched a true boxer before?
Sweet Pea didnt even have no power. Mayorga is full of power and Spinks made him look dumb.
The bottom line is that with Spinks style he wont get hit that much and he can score alot with his ring generalship and by being a quick, slick, southpaw.
Power Means Nothing in boxing unless you are not a slick boxer. Fighters need power but if you are a slick boxer then you dont need any.
Its like the old saying. I forgot who said it but someone asked a short basketball player one day, "How do you think you can compete with these guys at your size", and the guy responded "Ive always been this size".
Its the same about boxers and its also the reason why I think Paulie can beat Cotto. People say that Paulie is feather fisted and Cotto will walk right through him but you know what? Paulie, Spinks, and many other boxers have always been feather fisted. Theyve been that way since they started at a young age. Therefore they have learned the art to fight without power and neaturalize there opponent.
If these guys were born with Tito type power then they wouldve fought a different way but instead they had to learn the art of hitting without getting hit.
You think they never train with people that hit like trucks? Theyve been doing that forever and therfore Karmazin or Cotto wont be anything special to them as far as power goes.
Now with that being said, both Karmazin and Cotto could easily win but it wont have nothing to do with the fact that these guys are light punchers because they have been that way there whole lives and they know how to fight that way and neaturalize guys with big power.
Shoot, I remember guys on here use to say that about Floyd vs Tszyu. "How can Floyd deal with Tszyu's power", and "Floyd cant hurt Tszyu"? Its so stupid for guys to say things like that because they obviously dont know boxing.
Unless you go "way" up in weight then power doesnt mean anything if your a slick boxer who is use to not having power and there opponents having alot

Bold is incorrect.
of course power is important just as speed and skill are important
if you were to come across a boxer with similar skill level to yourself a little extra power would be very helpful, most fights are won by knockout/tko
I've said it a million times on here...
Guys like Paul Spadafora.....his complete & total lack of punching power made people think he was a better technicioan than he really was.
Guys like Paul S. & Malignaggi.....are no different than the guy who scores 25 KO's in his first 25 fights, but suddenly can't punch once he steps up.
Spads & Malignancy .....so much more hittable when the competition is at a higher level.
Malignancy looks like a defensive master when facing mediocrities. Cotto is overrated, but the furthest thing from a mediocrity. Those thinking Paulie is so slick, will be stunned at how easily/frequently Cotto reaches him.
Doesnt matter who he looked good against, what matters is he looked good doing it. If he outclasses a "bum", thats what he did. You cant just say he'll lose to every fighter with power, doesnt make sense, and defeats the purpose of boxing.
I never once stated he'd lose to any fighter with power.
Cotto is not "Any fighter with Power". He cuts off the ring better than anyone in boxing, and has among the best footwork you'll find among fighters. He's also skilled and has a pretty strong will.
Power is one of the last things that will beat Malignaggi.

Unless you are the sweet peas and Camachos of today a slick boxer who doesnt hit very hard will eventually get tagged. All punches hurt but your not gonna make your opponent respect you by fancy footwork and slipping.
Some boxers are so strong that they need almost nothing else. And others are very skilled, but it is just not enough at times.
Basically, in order to be a successful boxer you need to have more than that, like speed, a good chin and rhythm.
Who knows, hes still, one of the most skillful boxers today.
Yeah I'm not hating on Malignaggi or trying to hijack this thread, but I can name at least 20 more skilled boxers off the top of my head.
Malignaggi is really nothing special....he looks slick against guys who are fighting on short notice, and really are there for the payday.

That's ridiculous.
Paul Malignaggi is slick and has no power. Are you telling me he's not going to need any power if he want's to beat Cotto?

There are different types of boxers and various kinds of boxing fans.
Some George Foreman fans might tell you that it is all about raw power and not skill.
Maybe; but I'll bet George wouldn't say that.

Yes, i 100% agree with this post.
Which is also why i think Manfredo and Mora from Contender are underrated, because their both featherfisted. Mora moreso than manfredo.
I mean, a punch is a punch. Other than knockout power, it doesn't matter if its average power or light - it still hurts and snaps your head back and all that. Nobody can 'walk through punches'.
Except Chuvalo maybe.
But yea, i think that, there are two types of punchers. People who can KTFO you, and people who can't. The people who can't can cumulate damage on you to KO you. People in this category are the Mayweathers, Malignaggis, Toneys of the boxing world. Some may have more KOS than others, sure, because there is a power difference, but in terms of Victory of Defeat, it doesn't matter, because everybody's punches hurt.
Very valid point. If one needs a specific example of the power of skill vs the power of power...look at Calzaghe-Lacy. That was art what Calzaghe did...brutal art; but art none the less.
It's all about skill.
