Ok im not the guys biggest fan, and I know people are writing him off before he has stepped in the ring against Cotto, but this thread is about what Pauli can do.
Lets not make the mistake we made with Lacy-Calzaghe, and write off the one we havent seen, so firstly here is a clip of Malignaggi.
Pauli Malignaggi In Action....
From the clip you immediately see a completely unique style, one that at least I have never seen before. He uses the whole shoulder roll style and mixes it with a bit of his own style, and look at the effect its having. He is avoiding punches, and succesfully countering, even smothering his opponent with shots. He gives his opponents a small target to hit, as he stands virtually side on often bending down to quickly avoid shots and fire back with quick shots. The problem being that his shots dont have the reputation of being harmful shots, but who is ruling out a UD?
You can see from the clip he pressures on and off, succesfull with both styles, however he tends to box off the back foot generally. Now a defensive fighter, who boxes off the backfoot can cause problems, especially for someone who believes in their power like Cotto does. He draws his opponents onto shots with shuffles backwards and then as he thinks he has the edge never fails to fire less than 3 shots with a slight pivot at the end of it all to neutralise any counters.
If Malignaggi has worked hard in the gym, and gone with his strengths, whilst training towards Cotto's weaknesses, he has a legit chance... Dont get me wrong though, I still believe Cotto has the overall advantage given his experience against slightly higher level fighters, and good body work, ring movement etc etc.
It depends which style is going to take the fight. If Malignaggi can pull off his whole defensive roll's and make use of his speed and defense we may see an upset. If Cotto stamps his authority early on, then we may see Malignaggi getting completely thrown off his gameplan which is clearly to outbox Cotto even though he recently claimed he will knock him out.
Its just a thought guys... Im not a "Cotto Hater" or any of that stuff, but im just giving the boy props for what he does do, and I thought I would give my opinion of him going into the biggest fight of his career.
I guess what im saying is dont make the mistake of writing Malignaggi off...
From what I saw in that clip, he keeps his hands down a lot, especially for a guy who uses a defensive style that you're talking about. I haven't seen much of him, but I am looking for his fights to watch before June 10 so I can get a better idea, but that clip seemed to sum it up nicely. I can see where you're coming from with him having his own style, but he's liable to get caught with a Tszyu-Judah shot if he fights Cotto like that. I think 3 or 4 minutes in you can see he gets caught with a good one coming in. We will see.
This is what I saw,
Good: He keeps extremely busy, throws punches in bunches, gives you many angles (constantly moving), good stamina
Bad: No power, relies on flurries, keeps his hands way down (sometimes backs up with hands down
I can see him getting away with his style for about 3 rounds. I also can see him catching Cotto's left hook to the body and slowing down. I still go with Cotto by TKO.
this is def a likely scenario
mal has skills undoubtedly
but he lacks the power to keep someone like cotto off of him
i have played devil's advocate wiht other fights to expose other possibilites
but wiht this one i see no other outcome than mali eating a left hook and looking up at lights and a ref
Thanks for the nice unbiased break down of Paulie. Karma sent your way.
However, I just feel that Cotto is in an entirely different league than Paulie. Also, his frame is just way too small to handle Cotto's body shots.
Thanks for the karma, and yes I agree with what you are saying... but what my point is, is that it is down to how Pauli deals with the pressure, not how thick Cotto lays it on...
Karma returned if I can. :)

I was actually thinking the same thing. His frame is extremely small, and im thinking how well his body is going to stand up to the punishment. But there is no denying the talent there, right? :)
hes got talent, yes.

Man i hate his hair...hes quick and smart in the ring though. He looks small, though.

oh, and i think he may have balance issues. Based on this fight and i think the yelton one that i saw. Im also wondering how he will fare in the 11th and 12th rounds (if he gets there) seeing as his longest fight is 10 rounds.
I suppose all these questions will be answered on the 10th.
Pray tell who would you estimate to be the somebody's in the division?
Erm, technically the 7 others ranked above Malignaggi in the light welterweight division...
Oh yeah and refer to PBF's post.
its a filler until castillio bro read your fight guide

Who the fuck are you talking about?
And I havent "dogged" on anybody. Im analysing Malignaggi's strong points, the things that I believe he may use against Cotto, who I believe is looking for the KO. Nobody is dissing anybody, so why are you coming on my thread looking for an argument?
I think if he beats Malignaggi that will only make the case that he fights nobody's stronger. (Ranked 83rd in division)
Go figure.
