I actually both hate and like the idea: it seems he will stay at 140, unless offered a fight with somebody like Mayweather...so probably anybody that was originally a 140lb fighter that has a big name, he will consider moving back up for those fights.
It's good for him since I really don't think his body frame is fit at all for 147.
There will still be some good fights, like the winner of the Castillo vs Corrales fight; maybe Acelino Freitas will move up; I could also see Hatton moving back up for fights like Gatti, Mayweather, and maybe Judah if he gets his name back into the picture; also, he could probably get Cotto soon since he is still at 140, that would be a big fight HBO would be willing to pay for and Bob Arum might like that fight now.
Oscar is a BIG MONEY fight, but not sure he will take it now, even if Oscar is not the same fighter, he still is good, has the size advantage, is much better than Collazo, and has a big left hook, and a nice right hand since Mayweather Sr. took over; not sure where that jab has gone.
I don't agree that a "real champion" or whatever has to win belts at multiple weights. Hagler stuck to one weight and was a great champion, far ahead of many multiple weight champions. If Hatton decides he is best suited to the 140 division and stays there, more power to him.
A guy that relies more on speed, such as PBF, can more easily move up and box. Hatton relies on strength and if that doesn't follow him to 147, he needs to stay at 140. It's smart of Hatton to know his limitations.
Good move.
People should realize that every fighter is bounded by physical limitations. If he is not comfortable at 147 then go back to 140 where he belongs. You should also realize that some people medicine is other's poison. So don't expect Hatton to be doing what other fighters have done or accomplished, climb in weight division and still be succesful.
he is pretty smart too. so bound to be a good choice.
hope he gets his "dream" 6 opponents in his last 3yrs as a fighter
Without the clinching and hugging, Hatton has nothing.
Well, nothing apart from the WBA belt and an unbeaten record. On Hatton's WORST night in the ring he stepped up a weight, beat the champion to a UNANIMOUS decision and maintained his unbeaten record. Not a bad worst night.
this in your sig is some serious REAL TALK.

"Collazo will be avoided like the plague from now on - no-one will want to fight him.(cause he beat Hatton)" - another Daniel Santos
Im so sick of hearing about that. Nobody fucking cares about Margarito, period. I wanna see floyd fight people who matter, people whos names will be remembered for generations to come, not some asshole who the ring overrates along with the rest of you.
Yeah, well I'm sick of hearing about how having 1 bad performance out of 41 fights when fighting at a new weight against a skilled, awkward, naturally bigger fighter, whilst topping the bill for the 1st time in a foreign country makes you an overrated bum. Get some fucking perspective people.
I've changed my view on Hatton. I think he's overrated now.
He looked average/mediocre against Collazo. He couldn't wrestle Collazo because Collazo is natural 147lb fighter. Without the wrestling tactics, Hatton's skills didn't show. He couldn't jab, couldn't throw straight hands, couldn't effectively adjust.
Without the clinching and hugging, Hatton has nothing.
There's nothing to say that he wouldn't do well at the weight if he avoided the true welters like Floyd does.

How come Hatton can't do well in 147lbs? What's the excuse? He's too lazy to train or what? Maybe too many quality fighters that can beat him perhaps.

That should really read "Mayweather is climbing weight classes fighting other guys who are climbing weight classes"

Hatton got handled. Hatton's heart is weak.
He can adjust if he wanted, but he doesn't feel like it. He needs to take the easy route. While Mayweather is climbing weight classes making history, Hatton is moving back down in weight because he got beat after climbing one. Hmmm.

all candidates for greatness...so ur point is ?
not many fighters step up AND get a world title shot unless the
champs team see some financial gain from the fight.
I'm not talking about money I'm talking about competiting. Great fighters go to where the competition is, not that going there necessarily makes you a great fighter but shows that your attempting great things.
Hatton is attempting to do this by going to 147lbs because he knows the competition is there and not at 140lbs. If he comes back down he is avoiding the better competition that is at or going to 147lbs.

Hatton looked like he had great heart in the fight with Collazo, he wasn't fighting his best, but gave his all, and didn't go down in the 12th when he was under the cosh.

It looks like he's backing off that statement now..
Hatton ponders next move!

It's still up in the air as to whether WBA welterweight champion Ricky Hatton will remain at welter or drop back down to 140. "I'm a natural light welterweight and nothing has changed," he said. "I have to thank my strength coach Kerry Kayes because seven weeks before this fight, I was due to meet Juan Lazcano at light welterweight. And then I was fighting Collazo at welterweight, so I had seven weeks to build into a welterweight. If I stay at welterweight, I'll only get better because I'd develop more into the weight. But, I showed that I can cut it, that's the main thing; if a big fight is offered at junior welterweight, I'll come back down but I showed that I can do it at welter as well"

smart all right........moving down one division and fighting an opponent from two divisions down!!!!
he said at welter he is giving the opponent a head start, and i suppose now he wants to be given this head start vs a lightweight!
yeah, a light weight that has to cheat to make the weight?!?! give me a break castillo is no longer a lighweight anyways and has to move up so this is a great fight for both of them and for us as people who like to watch guys beat the shit out of eachother.
yep all true.....only great fighters get title fights on thier
1st visit to a higher division & hatton is close to greatness
hey moochi, wtf are you on about ?
What are you talking about.....any Great fighter should be able to go up 1 weight division from where they started and still dominate and win against elites at that next division. Duran started as a super featherweight and beat a prime SRL at WW.
This is especially true in a division that is becoming depleted of its top names because they are moving up in weight. Who is left to fight at 140lbs other than former lightweights that may move up?
Examples of Fighters who came up in weight:
SRL, SRR, Sugar Shane Mosley, Duran, Chavez, Morales, Barrera, Pac, Corrales, Mayweather, Pernell, Sugar Shane, Roy Jones, ODLH, Trinidad,
He explained: "Seven weeks ago I was due to fight Juan Lazcano at light-welter, and then it changed and I had to move up to welterweight in seven weeks.
"Normally you need two or three fights to develop into the weight, but I had seven weeks. So I won a world title out of my weight division, which gives me a buzz.
Is this true?
good decision
It's a good decision. Fighters are rarely objective about themselves and their career, but Hatton is showing that kind of sense. It's just too big a mountain to climb for Hatton to hold his own against the bigger welterweights such as Cintron and Margarito, guys that he would eventually have to fight at 147 lbs. Mayweather is also probably too difficult for him.
Taking on the winner of Castillo-Corrales 3 at 140 lbs. is a good idea. I would look forward to such a fight.
