I'm just asking this question out of pure curiousity. Does anyone here respect these guys as athletes or are you under the impression that its just a circus act. As a person whose stepped between the ropes for both sports, i have tremendous respect for both. I've asked my friends this question and they all watch wrestling but not boxing so of course they have a somewhat biased opinion, so i figured i could get some opinions here, most likely they will also be biased, but this time in favor of boxers. I'd appreciate as many real responses as possible.
Actually there is a way. I played some football in high school, I've trained in a boxing gym, and I've also trained to be a wrestler. There is no comparison. After the first few days of training in the ring, i could barely walk the next day, somethin i've never experienced after a day on the field or in the gym. You are sore for a week after just an hour or so training in a wrestling ring. You have no idea what they go through night in and night out. Which is why a good portion of them become addicted to pain killers. That is a necessary part of their life, no matter how tough you are. I'm gonna chose not to blow up on you because its obvious your ignorant to the business. And by the way, more former football players early deaths have been attributed to steroid use than professional wrestlers, dont beleive me? do the research. Oh and stop bringing up Eddie guerrero as his death had nothing to do with steroids, it was a combonation of a long time addiction to alcohol and drugs, including pain killers, that caused his death. He also was considered one of the clean guys when it came to steroids. This info coming from guys such as chris benoit, misterio, chavo guerrero and chris jericho who traveled with him almost his entire career.
I grew up loving both wrestling and football. Id say wrestling and PROFESSIONAL football go hand in hand. As far as the ware and tare on your body they are about even. I played highschool football as well. Its tough on your body, but nowhere near how hard professional football is. Ofcourse I dont know from experience, but these guys go six straight months 6 days a week taking extreme amounts of punishment. Now wrestlers are on the road a lot, but are they always going to have a 20 minute highly physical match? No. Sometimes they have "squashes" where they wrestle for 5 minutes tops. Thats why I say they go hand in hand. Wrestlers are on the road an average of what 300 some odd days a year. Thats a long time and very hard on your body, but its not consistent as far as the physical part goes. In football you have to dedicate around 6-8 months a year to it, however for that period of time you know your going to be doing something physical 5 to 6 days a week. Also the pressure to win is on almost everyone that plays. That starting player knows his team needs him so he has to play with a broken foot and so on. The person backing him up knows he cant sit out a practice because that could finally be his chance to get playing time. Theres just too many ifs ands and buts when you get to a conversation like this. I could tell you a hundred reasons why football is more physical than boxing or wrestling more physical than football or boxing more physical than either and so on.
As far as steroids go, they are in both "sports." Early football players probably died because they were uneducated about them where as now they are. That doesnt mean they dont do it because Id say about 30% of the NFL does. I also think wrestlers do. The whole scandal in the early 90s proves so. Aslo with the fact that they just introduced a new policy recently. I agree with you on Eddie Guerrero to an extent. He did die because of his abuse of alcohol and other drugs, but I think one can assume he took roids. In his WCW days he was a much smaller man, and right before his death you can see the huge difference. Look at Rey Masterio as well. The difference in what he used to look like 8 years ago and now is amazing.
Vince has never "forced" anyone to do any steroids. This was proven in the supreme court when the U.S. Government tried to put the man in prison for doing just that. And eddie was never 240lbs, at his heaviest which was probably at his time of death he was 225lbs. And yes you can get that big at that height, its called hardwork and dedication, I know people with a simalr build to eddie and they've never done a cycle in their life.
Oh they were succesful in ecw? When the cruiserweights who started the divison in WCW were in ECW it was on at 1:30 in the morning on the local msg network, noone outside the tristate area knew about it except for what they read in magazine articles. I wouldnt call that a success. Did Bischoff raid ecw for talent? you bet he did. But those wrestler didnt make a penny before they got to wcw. And by those wrestlers i mean, Misterio, Benoit, Jericho, Guerrero, Malenko, Psycosis. Trust me, I am not lying about the length of time I've been watching wrestling.
Oh and as for the decrease in size of wrestlers. That trend started in the late 90's after the fans started to become bored with the same suplexes and bodyslams they had been seeing for 20 years already. Wrestlers saw how succesful the cruiserweight divison was in WCW because of the high flying fast paced action. The Hulk Hogans and Ric Flairs of the world just werent keeping the fans interest in the ring any longer because they were too slow and predictable. It was now the rey misterios, chris benoits, and eddie guerreros that everyone wanted to see. Thats the reason why wrestlers are smaller now, it has almost nothing to do with steroids. Wrestlers just like every other athlete are in it to make money. If the big guys are selling, your gonna have more steroid abuse, if the little guys are sellin, well then everyones gonna be cuttin weight. Just like with the lineman in the nfl. Theres been lineman dying every year because of their massive size combined with the intense heat of the summer workouts. But i dont see them getting any smaller, because all the players know that that size is what the teams are looking for.
if youve been watching wrestling since the 80s you would no the cruiserwieghts (which is basicly lucher libre) was succesful in ecw well before wcw and eric bishof raided the ecw for new talent for the monday night wars
There is also no way you can tell me that a pro-wrestler trains harder or even as hard as boxers or football players.

First off Linemen dont die every year. Yes it has happend on occasion but its not every year or even every 2 years. Also compared to the number of Collega and NFL players I think its relatively low. When I wrestled (real wrestling no pro-wrestling) there were many more instances of deaths due to cutting weight. That is why the changed many rules governing High School wrestling and a couple of rules for college wrestling.
I do respect pro-wrestlers for what they are entertainers and in the same category as stuntmen and some circus attractions. It incredible for you to equate that there is just as much if not more steroid use in the NFL as there is/was in pro-wrestling, where is your proof what are you basing this on? Sure there are cases but there is stringent mandatory and random testing. it is easier to believe that a previously non-regulated or loosely regulated group would have wider spread steroid use. The bodies that Ultimate Warrior and others (cant remember names) were just blatantly roided. There is also no way you can tell me that a pro-wrestler trains harder or even as hard as boxers or football players.

Ive been watchin wrestling since the 80's and prolly know more about it than anyone on here. As for the comment on Triple H, he was 240lbs when he came into the wwf in 1995, when he became the wwf champ in 1999 he was 260lbs, the heaviest hes ever been is 265 and that was a couple years ago. He only started looking flabby in 2002 after he came back from fuckin his knee up because he wasnt able to train for so long. To this day he has 2 bad knees and hasnt been able to weight train as hard as he used too. Thus him not bveing as cut as he once was. Oh but just blaming steroids is a lot easier i guess. And by the way the plan to put the wellness program into effect started over a year before Eddie Guerrero died. But i guess you could just tell yourself that maybe they were planning on him dying? Sounds about as reasonable as your last reply.
come on big show would put his hand on manny's head and hold his arm out straight and manny would keep swinging but wouldnt get anything but wind maybe triple H but not big show
many would just shoeshine The Giant's ball sac
Manny Paquio would KTFO Triple H and the Big Show in the same nite

I would call them athletes.Shelton Benjamin and Brock Lesnar were both successful college wrestlers and of course Kurt Angel was an olympic gold medalist. Some are pure athletetes with backgruounds in many sports some are not.But they work hard in that ring and entertaine for that alone they should be considered athletes.
Thats not true, the also have a drug policy now, but they call it a Wellness program. And if you havent noticed wrestlers are a lot smaller than they were 15-20 years ago. Then the average weight was prolly around 260-280 lbs, now its more like 230-240. So could we please leave steroids out of this, legal or not theyre in every sport, dont belittle wrestlers for doing the same things all pro athletes do. And still its not all of them, actually most of them dont do it. What people dont realize when they see a guy like Triple H that hes been lifting since he was 14. If we had been doing the same thing and working as hard as he has we would be just as big as him. So could we leave steroids out of this, wrestlers get tested like everyone else.
how long you been watching wrestling?
in the mid 90s triple h who then was called hunter hearst helmesly was tiny compared to what he is now. then triple h started using steroids to bulk up now the drug testing has come in place he is getting flabby now because he cant use the steroid to cheat

how can you leave it out? you notice people like eddie guerero and brittish bulldog and rick rude all who used to take steriods now dead because of that and the effects that took place over the years of using them.
I respect these guys a hell of alot, that was what I wanted to do more than anything in the world all growing up and actually went to Killer Kowalski's School of Wrestling in Malden on Pleasent St and these guys are amazing at what they do even during training but you cant deny the fact steriods are a huge part of that sport/entertainment.
But to your question I respect these guys and girls greatly due to their dedication, they go out there 5 to 6 days a week and wrestle their ass's off injured or not. They may not be the best actors or in the best shape or even the most respectable person but they entertain us day in and day out and as K-dog said it is a male soap opera it has sex, fighting, and a story line. They are athletes and no matter what the outcome what the story I respect them.

I don't know how anyone couldn't respect pro-wrestlers as athletes or performers. The outcome may be predetermined; but those guys don't have stunt doubles. They put it all on the line to entertain the crowd and give every fan their money's worth. How can anybody not respect that??
Pro-wrestling is the equivalent to being a soap opera for men. All the drama, sub-plots, and plenty of ass kicking. You gotta love it. :)
