Well I am a huge supporter of Cotto as I am originally from PR and I must go with my country man but how far can he go.
Cotto came in the absolute perfect time as trinidad was leaving and he was emerging. Cotto Has a Trinidad -De La Hoya style which is a stragetic, compose, defensive style. picking and choosing hes punches, very efficient.
but... I am worry about his chin. I keep seen him get in trouble when a clean punch lands. Kind of reminds me of Trinidad earlier carrer with a glass chin but always gets back up and knocks the other guy out.
trinidad had amazing power w/ both hands and in the last decade nobody could match his power in the walterweight division but Cotto doesnt have this power to get him out of jams.
So I put this question to you guys... How far can Cotto go specially now when hes going to start fighting the top fighters
I think he can really be successful, if he can improve his defense. I don't think his chin is as bad as some make it out to be, but he gets hit sometimes when he shouldn't, and against a fighter with some legs that won't gas 5 rounds into the fight that could prove to be a real factor in whether or not he gets the win. If he can keep from getting dragged into wars with brawlers, he should do very well, however I fear that his pride may prove to be his biggest enemy.
I think he can go far and be competitive versus the current swarmers around the welterweights. I'm not as concerned about his chin as others are. He got rocked by Torres but Torres is a hard hitter and Cotto got hit flush and didnt get KOed.
What I'm more worried about for Cotto are the boxer puncher types i.e. PBF and Zab type of fighters. I think a boxer puncher who has real pop and can make Cotto respect there power will be tough for Cotto.
I also agree Cotto is like Tito in that Cotto fighting style is efficient and strategic and methodical but versus a boxer with good power it could be trouble. Remember how much trouble Tito had versus ODLH. IMHO Tito didnt win that fight ODLH lost it. It was ODLH to take and he decided to look pretty at the end.
Completely agree with you, we'll see how he'll do with a more active pure boxer style like a hopkins, sweet pea whitaker, PBF.

Once Cotto moves up I believe we'll see him return to the days of being a fluid, powerful boxer/puncher. He has gone back to his defensive style, selecting his shots and doing a great job of landing powerful counter shots.
I think he can be a big face for the sport in the future as a welterweight and jr middle. I also believe we will see him have less problems taking punches at 147.
We'll find out after the Castillo fight- Malignaggi won't be a great test for Cotto , he should tear him up rather easily, but when he steps in there with Castillo, the fireworks will go off-- The biggest threat I see for Cotto is PBF not Hatton like many are saying---

In my opinion i rank him very highly. His fight with torres was a tough one, he got hit clean hard loads of times! But he managed to pull through when alot of fighters would have gone down and stayed down.
I remember there being one serious uppercut!! He took it...gained his composure again, and knocked the guy out. So i can see Cotto going pretty far, his fight with castillo will give us an idea of how far he will go. Hes always in exciting fights, he may lose one or two i think, but he will come back stronger if he loses.
