jermain taylor, fighter of the year? hogwash, he lost the first fight against hop and everyone should know it by now and the second fight was a draw. how could anyone think that sloppy ass taylor should be awarded the prize for fighter of the year?
taylor is an hbo paper champ and he deserves none of the titles he has, let alone to be awarded fighter of the year honors.
Why are all the best, most thoughtful, most measured posters way back here? Those other shitheads, the boxing "fans" should be picked off for sheer ignorance.
really, so losing a title fight and having it given to you without deserving it makes you a real champ? i guess vitali was a real champ too huh.
Ummm. Yeh, Vitali was the only real champ until his retirement...I guess you don't follow boxing closely enough to know that he beat Sanders after the Lewis loss.
Whether you agree or disagree with the decision is not an issue. What matters is that there is a W on Taylor's record, an L on Hopkins. While that's not always the case, in a fight that close, it certainly was.
Same here. Both fighters are great fighters and there's should be no arguements on the results. ;)
It's just that some people here have the habbit of TRASHING and DISCREDITING other fighters for their boys to "shine".
this is exactly what the author of the article did: discredit hatton to push taylor
I had the first Taylor-Hopkins fight as a draw, but I had Taylor winning the rematch. I think either guy, Hatton or Taylor, was worthy. I wouldn't argue with either pick.
Name one fighter who would have beaten Vitali. After Lewis retired, VK was practically unchallengeable by the inferior opponents we have today. Also, who cares if Taylor didn't look like a superstar against Hopkins...EVERYONE thought Taylor was too green and would lose. Now that he didn't(TWICE), everyone says he didn't look "badass" enough. I swear, I'm glad I don't use this forum as boxing knowledge, because most of the people on here are fucking retarded when it comes to boxing.
simply not true: a lot of experts predicted that hopkins, because of his age would not be able to take the pressure from a young and strong middleweight. (I think the poor showing against eastman was a good indicator)
its not only he did not look bad-ass enough, (you could say the same for sweet pea's or winky's fights, that's not a reasonable point): he looked like shit and lots of ppl had him losing the 1st fight,
and i respectfully wipe my ass with polls, where most votes come from ppl who don't even know how a fight is scored
How is the second fight a draw. All three judges had the same score and so did herold, who I tend to agree with most of the time. A paper champ would not have coneceted that many times to hopkins and tarver wont be able to do what taylor did. So keep hatin on taylor and after he whups winky you can find a new excuse to hate on him.
You seems to be getting lost. :p It was Taylor who's got the titles in the second fight so that's not a second shot for him.
The first fight was not convincing reason why the second fight was arranged but Bhops failed again. The mere fact that Taylor beat somebody who has never been beaten in 12 years qualifies him to be a fighter of the year. So stop whinning. :)
not whining just pointing out how easily people will follow an hbo champ. this is making the sport of boxing look like big time wrestling when the winner is picked before the fight if it goes to the cards.
he got a gift decision according to who? a few select hopkins fans? imagine how bad the sport would be if the judges decided who won based on the fighters' fans opinion..LMFAO!! the majority of the boxing world sides with taylor on both fights, so please just leave it alone and stop making yourself look like a hopkins-worshipping fool!
hmmm, you must be looking at different expert opinions then. and i am certainly not a hopkins worshiper, he is boring as hell to watch but he clearly won the first fight and i think most people agree with me on that.
oh, and its not a matter of taylor not looking like a superstar, its the fact that he got a gift decision in the first fight and never should have had the second shot.

it doesnt matter if there was anyone who could have beaten vitali, the point is that it was a bogus title and he hid with it until he had to retire.

No, your post is hogwash. At least the bit about Taylor not being the a real champ. You're right about Hatton deserving it, though.

wrong man won?? bull++-t!
hatton made zoo quit after zoo stopped mitchell and no one this side of the atlantic was giving him a chance
taylor looked like shit against hopkind after hopkins looked like shit against eastman, taking rounds and rounds off
the writer of the article is a taylor nuthugger or a hatton hater, or both.
I hope taylor shows he is a great fighter, but he did not do it this year
Well said!

No. I saw both fights, and you're wrong. The second fight was clearer, but both were very close. That's what happens when you fight one of the toughest, craftiest, dirtiest veteran champs around. I'll admit that Hatton's case would be even stronger if his second win had not been against Maussa, but be that the case, Maussa's no pushover, and it was still a devastating knockout. Both of Hatton's wins were absolutely devastating. Think about it, making a top-ten pound for pound fighter quit? One who hadn't lost in nine years. A hall of fame bound fighter at that. One who was coming off a career best win. That's devastation.
Look, if you turn the fight game into one of pure statistics, you lose the point of boxing. It's not about numbers. Yes, Taylor won twice against an all-time great, onve more than Hatton did. But Hatton made an all-time great quit, and there was absolutely no controversy about his win. If there was it was trumped up by people who simply don't like Hatton. I respect Taylor a lot for giving Hopkins the worst fight of his career since the draw against Mercado, but I also think that the closeness of both wins, coupled with the age of his opponent should be troubling to anyone who thinks he deserves fighter of the year.
Yes, I know, Hatton's opponent was aging too, but Tzyu was coming off the best win of his career, and seemed to be having a sort of Indian Summer. Hopkins, on the other hand, had been relying on guile more than he had ever had to, and though his last win had been commanding, it wasn't hall of fame stuff.
