Refusal to fight outside of europe, repeatedly pulling out of fights, less than top class competition and comments of retiring in the next 18 months.
On retiring in 18 months he says "it's all changed now", he's calling out Antonio Tarver, Roy Jones and talking about fighting in America.
Could it be, that until Saturday night, Joe Calzaghe never knew how good he really is???
Did Calzaghe know how good he is?
From what I seen, Calzaghe really isn't that good. Beating Lacy really doens't amount to much, because anyone that has watched Lacy's career knew that his lack of defense and head movement would catch up to him one day, he just fought a bunch of has beens and never wases and got "slapped" up once he fought someone that could really exploit his inexperince and lack of defense...But anyways Calzaghe did his thing because what is a man suppossed to do, when a boy calls you out, you tap his young ass... He whooped on lacy for a full 12 rounds, but I think it shows more about how these promoters will get a marketable fighter a bunch of choice fights and rely on his look and unbeaten record to promote a fight rather than his actual skill...
i didnt know joe was that good, i wanted and still want somebody to knock his ass out. but i give respect where its due and joe is the shit now. he beat up on lacy bad , it reminded me of the hopkins/trinidad fight. the straight ahead fighter getting worked over by the slick boxer. congrats joe u fagget mutherfucker lol ;)
You were one certain person i remember calling him Calfaggie! Cheers for those bad karma reports.
I never once said that, ever. Don't say shit you cannot prove, buddyboy.
He must have known he was pretty good, otherwise he would have started slower, I think. He didn't seem tentative in the ring at all. Maybe he was unsure for the first minute of the fight, but it seemed by the time round1 had ended, he knew he could control the fight. At the end of the second round, he was pretty much overflowing with confidence.
People should not be surprised that Joe is still being criticized. Joe has a long history that is downright stale. With this win, Joe has opened a door. That is ALL. He still has to WALK through it. If he goes on to do what he did before the Lacy fight (fighting unknown/unproven fighters at home) then his win means little. If he walsk through the door of oppurtunity and uses this fight as a launching pad to get bouts with guys like Kessler, Tarver, Woods, and Adamek, then we can really be impressed.
It is not a crime to admit that Lacy was not as good as people thought. That's not demeaning Joe, it's just stating a fact. And along with that, we also state the fact that Joe did very well and won in such a fashion that he demands attention.

I think he knew and nobody believed him..........well for what it is worth I believe him now. :(
me too, i have to admit that i almost shit my pants saturday. he was phenomenal.
Sorry to get off topic, is joe as good as he thought he was I say yes. Hes a fighter of course he is as good as he thinks he is that is part of the mental preperation for fighting. You have to have that steele confidence the kind that is going to allow you to be on your game and if a curveball is thrown at you the mental ability to fight through it. Joe is just one of those guys that his mind fights to the level of his compotiton. He had lapses in some of his fights agiest weaker oppenents because he could not get up for the fight. This is nothing new to the sport of boxing legends have lost fights agienst infearor comp because they were not mentally ready to fight. The nice thing about Joe who I do like I just like Lacy so much better is that if his hands hold up he is a young almost 34. He has never taken real punishment. You guys saw him in the fight he looked like a prospect getting a shot at a belt agienst a fighter he knows he can woop that was how Joe's mind was that fight. He was full of vison and clarity the type of focus that can split hairs. It was the mental state of ali verse forman of lenard vs hagler of pac man verses barrera that was the state joe was in saturday night
Who gives a shit when he's been fighting all the tomato cans making up the 168 division? Let him fight some real competition if they ever show up! He'll never be the best until he fights legends, so he better move up to Lt heavy if he wants any kind of serious rep. 168 is like cruisers...it's a dead division!
not to mention Kessler who many people on this fight speak very quitly around because the man is a world champ has beaten solid comp is only 26 and has no weakness in his game ya that sounds like a weak divison to me not to mention that there are some of the young middle waits and good prospects that will move up to SM boy you don't know shit. If your going to come back at me like I don't know shit why don't you ask others on this site and bow down
Calzaghe knows he is good, you don't go back to your corner and say 'his powers shit, he's shit' after one round in the biggest fight of your life if you dont think your special.

for real fightes right now the cruisers are it they are all fighting each other and mormeck was a good champ as was braithwait the divison is packed with stars and old legends like virgil hill who just beat gurov a hard punching skilled russian at age 42 and the same thing is happening at 168 look at the prospects and emerging contenders in that divison oh wait you wouldn't because you don't know shit about boxing where he are some names Bute, Huck, Dawson, andrade, chanet who just beat typsko. the divson will be packed by the end of the year with good solid young fighters. your a tool just like your avatar fuck off fool
Who should he have fought?
And as for fighting outside Europe, i always say thats crap.
Hes the champion, he has every right to fight where he wants. Maybe if he wanted recognition in America, he should have fought there. But against who?
Im not sure the interest was ever there in the US for him to sell out any venues.
It makes sense for him to fight at home.
Plus he has always known he was good. So much so that i always felt he was an arrogant bastard. But he has calmed down a bit since then.
The problem I have with Joe Calzaghe is that he has yet to show consistency. You don't know which Joe will show up, the mediocre Joe or the brilliant Joe. Two nights ago, the flawless Joe showed up and we found out what he can do at his best.
bad joe or not he still has the goose egg that says a lot
Joe wants money now he is all about money and always has been, and now he can earn the big bucks of the back of this, he is 33 and he has max three fights left his left hand on the verge of packing up full time, he needs to build up his pension fund. So Roy Jones Jr, and Tarver....maybe Clinton Woods if RJJ fucks Joe yet again. Joe won't fight Kessler when he can fight RJJ or Tarver and get paid handsomely for it.

yeah 18 defenses of his title is pretty inconsistent

I wholeheartedly agree with this...
Its opened the door, now its up to him whether he walks through it.

Tarver beat Roy 3 times when he was supposed to be the P4P best! Tarver is on his way to being a legend fool! And cruisers ARE dead, name me any who aren't bums!
Oh and another thing Dick....dont ever use exclamation points when you are speaking to me, just dont do it.
