Both punches he's not even looking at Jones and seems more like the equivalent to football's "hail mary" desperate attempt to land if you ask me.
they were desperate shots, the only thing is, is that those punches were like he was standing in the pocket, even though he was leaning to move to the outside when he threw them his long arms made it possible for those shots to land cleanly instead of a glancing blow like they would've been had he been a smaller fighter throwing those shots.
(one big ass run on sentence).........
Yeah... and what would you call Wlad's "defense" against Peter?
Ducking and slipping is called having defense. Defense is not the same thing as being scared.
Yeah, he sure was ducking/scared when throwing those counters ---> desperate.

He was ducking punches each time he threw those counterpunches. They were both counterpunches. The first time Jones threw a righthand that Tarver ducked and then he came back with the left as Jones was throwing his lefthook. The second time Jones throws a jab and Tarver starts to counter with the right hook while Jones throws his own righthand.
i love roy...but give tarver his credit...buddy mcgirt has always been telling antonio to punch with roy and that's what happened..a lot of people don't punch when roy starts punching cuz they were scared of his speed (never fully realising that roy with his unorthodox style leves himself too open wen he lets his hands fly). i say that was a great left counter and a great check hook by the magic man...it's just unfortunate it happened to one of my favorite fighters...LOL
the first one is more "lucky" than the second by far. but like truth said, its a combo of luck and skill. however, i cant get over how well placed that uppercut was in the first gif. its the perfect punch to throw in that situation, and if there werent any ropes there, i think roy would have gone down

Where were Roy's reflexes? he just stood there. This was not the same Roy from before.
Tarver is a lucky bitch who came at the right time..and he wants to beat washed up legends like Roy Jones, Bernard Hopkins and Mike Tyson.
I think it's somewhere in the middle. Leading up to the fights, McGirt revealed the strategy to throw while Roy throws. You can see Roy landing his shots but he's throwing to score. Tarver threw in desperation but on purpose. The only time Roy is stationary is when he's sitting down on punches so that's the only chance Tarver had to score.
I think the first one was a mixture of luck and skill. It was skill that made him throw the left hand at the right time but it was luck that Roy happened to be in the wrong at the wrong time. Roy doesn't get hit that much in the middle of the ring, so that was rare at the time.
He just looks for the punch and ducks to dodge a punch coming at his face, as well as get a little more power by throwing his body into it. I don't see it being a bad thing, Hopkins did it all the time.
