Does anyone remember in September of 2003 watching Night of the Young Heavyweights? Well, on that telecast, these guys were showcased: Mesi, TOS, Guinn, Dokiwari, SSS, and Gomez. Out of all of them, the one who ended up being the best was the same one who looked the worst that night. DaVaryll Williamson, who I had been following on Friday Night Fights, got dusted in 1 round by Mesi contrary to my prediction that Mesi would go down; however, Williamson is the one who later stopped Jefferson and won a decision against McCall. Williamson is the one who put Klitschko on his ass and was denied a rematch. Williamson is the one who fought for a title, though he was outclassed against Byrd.
I remember watching that show and thinking, Guinn and Mesi are the future of the heavyweight division. I couldn't wait for a showdown between them. I was sure after seeing Mesi got his ass dropped and almost lose to Monte Barrett and Jirov that Guinn would win a fight between them. I no longer believe that after seeing Guinn look pathetic against Barrett and a few other opponents. Mesi and Guinn are probably out of the heavyweight title picture forever now.
If you remember night of the first edition of Night of the Young Heavyweights, David Tua crushed John Ruiz in one round. Ruiz also went on to become more successful than anyone else on that show. The next time night of the young heavyweights airs, believe you me: the man who gets KO'ed the fastest will be the biggest star.
I remember that card very well. I was supremely impressed on that night by all the fighters who won. Joe Mesi, fighting in his hometown on HBO, blew away TOS in one round and looked everything like the future star of the division. Dominick Guinn showed what he was about as he fought a hard, tough fight against Duncan Dokiwari, showed his great chin and came out on top. Juan Carlos Gomez showed tremendous skill as he outclassed a very pedestrian, but seemingly very popular opponent in Samil Sam.
That said, look at them now. Joe Mesi gets roughed up and dropped in his next 2 fights, showing a glaring lack of a chin and stamina. He went down once in the Barrett fight and won a majority decision, and went down 3 times against Jirov in a winning effort in 2004. However, in that fight, he suffered a subdural hemotoma, which sidelnied him for nearly 2 years.
Dominick Guinn showed that he doesn't know how to win a fight on points as he was soundly out slugged and outworked by both Monte Barrett and Sergei Lyakovich. After fighting a dreadful bout with Friday Ahununya that the judges thought neither deserved a W in, he got beaten up by James Toney for the final epitaph of his career as a contender. I could not honestly have forseen what occurred to "The Southern Disaster".
Juan Carlos Gomez was my underdog pick to be a serious contender in the muddled heavyweight division. He had it all, a former cruiserweight world champion, a great amateur pedigree, and an undefeated record. However, promotional disputes, a first round KO blowout against Yanqui Diaz, and a positive cocaine test after the McCall have all but signaled the end for The Black Panther. I really have no idea what the future holds for this seemingly once promising fighter.
I remember thinking Guinn was going to be a very good fighter....he has been a huge disappointment , I have never been too high on mesi although he can Brawl pretty good.I think Guinn will get back to winning against Harrison tho he is good against taller fighters it seems. :)
I was at those fights in Buffalo. The funny thing is, the best fighters of the night were on the untelevised part. Sam Peter blasted some guy out in 2, and Liakhovich also scored a ko. So the card may not have completely been a bust.
Also, I wish Dokiwari wouldve gotten another fight. He isnt that good, but physically, he could give a lot of people trouble.
Gomez would give Sam Peter fits IMO.

This shit about Diaz is just a stick to beat Gomez with. are Sinan Samil Sam, David Defiagbon and Oliver McCall better boxers than Diaz? of course they are. someone mentioned Jirov, Gomez would have whipped Jirov at cruiserweight, Toney didn't want to know Gomez, and Roy Jones avoided him. Mesi had very messy wins against Jirov and Barrett, Mesi was never going to do anything.
i also thought kirk johnson would own a piece of the title by now, he is the most skilled of all heavies. but he is a fatty that wont leave the pechanga entertainment center, seriously he is fighting for the third time in a row there. this time against javier mora or some shit like that. gilbert martinez, yanqui diaz and now mora, kirk really is taking boxing seriously right now  . although i still think an inshape kirk beats all the title holders.....
He beat Barrett who IS good and he beat Jirov before any of us knew Jirov was as good as dead after the Toney fight. Jirov hasn't even won a fight since Toney rolled him, has he?
Mesi didn't beat any name opponent to even be categorized as "good".
Diaz sucks ass. Mesi was at least GOOD. You can't argue that. His chin kinda sucked, but he won his fights by building up early leads and hanging on. Diaz is HORRIBLE at best. How is a loss to James Toney EVER embarrassing considering Toney is impossible to hit clean and even if you do, his chin is granite? His counter punching ability beats everyone around. Mesi doesn't have a loss by the way.
TOS was starched by Mesi in one round and Guinn has a granite chin, but was absolutely embarassed and beaten in a one sided affair by James Toney.
All of them have pretty bad losses. I can't see how you're trying to make TOS look like a rose here.

Yeah I have that show on tape and watched it not too long ago. The name was wishful thinking more than anything else. No one who fought on that card will ever contend for a title.
Gomez got knocked out in one round by Yanqui Diaz. Guinn and TOS do not have a loss that bad between them.

So yeah....
Mesi knocked Williamson out 30 seconds into the fight.
Stop using boxrec.....did you even see the Gomez/Diaz fight?

it was a bad stoppage but the fact that Yanqui Diaz had Gomez in trouble offers little hope for the Cuban
Not at all, Gomez had the long lay off, had the contract wrangle, didn't train, and just made a mistake by not taking the fight serious. he's beaten better fighters than Diaz, so why should it matter? he was avoided by big names like James Toney and Roy Jones through the years, made many defences of his cruiserweight title, easily defeated Sam in his first major fight at heavy, and since the defeat has came back with a few good wins, including a win over the decent David Defiagbon and Oliver McCall. he's without doubt one of the most naturally gifted boxers in the world, and when on his game can be a difficult fight for anybody. still the dark horse of the division IMO.
I don't really think the loss matters. a casual boxing fan who knows little about Gomez will look up boxrec and see that loss and not know the details behind it. he's beaten much better fighters at cruiserweight and heavyweight anyway, and is the most gifted out of the bunch. if he keeps winning he can't be denied.
The guy who was the best that night was Juan Carlos Gomez, and he's the only survivor from that list who i think still has a chance of winning something.
