It means you're getting hitting as much as you're hitting the other person. Like Duplicity said, Mayweather's never in fight of the year, because he doesn't get hit. Couldn't agree more.
Well said...
and it usually involves two less talented fighters (in terms of defense) winning the fight of the year award.
Gatti-Ward was FOTY. Gatti-Floyd was a blow out. Floyd doesn't play that get hit and hit game which is why he'll never win FOTY unless he faces some adversity.
Taking a cue on where you're coming from, I'd say It is still an HONOR and it will always be an honor to be part of the fight of the year but it won't be good for the fighter because it means being hurt and bruised.
Isn't that right? ;)
Neither has a defense, thats why it was considered one of the best fights of that year.
I disagree, if Floyd fought somebody with a pulse it could have the potentials of being fight of the year. Everybody gets hit, the better opposition the more u get hit.
An example would be Spinks vs Judah 1, both guys were considered "I jab you to death fighters" but in that fight it was dramatic, it was entertaining, and exciting, and a definite fight of the year candidate for that year.
Another is Morales vs Barrera 1 Erik was making a bid for best p4p fighter in the world at the time, and thats one of the best fights in recent memory.
He fought Corrales... crushed him, in a way Castillo hasn't.
Fought Castillo twice.
Fought Genaro Hernandez, Jesus Chavez. Won convincingly with them. They both have that come at you style and Floyd ripped them. Neither was fight on the year because Floyd doesn't get hit much. That's why he'll never be in the fighter of the year running.

^^i no he hasnt fought the bets competition, andi hate him, but he has fought corrales, and castillio twice
yeah and he also ran like crazy.
Yeah i know they were and are nowhere near the top of the p4p lists but im saying they were both fighters that try not to get hit, as was Mayweather against castillo, and Leonard vs Hearns. Leonard vs Duran 1. Floyd just needs better opposition to bring that fight out of him.
OK. I see your point. I read into it the wrong way. But, yeah, that's a pretty good assessment.
Yeah, but Spinks and Judah are nowhere near the top of the P4P list. Morales-Barrera (in their primes) is a good example, though. Corrales and Castillo are top 10 on most P4P lists, including mine, and look at their war. I think Bloodshed was more focusing on the top 2 or 3 P4P in the world. Mayweather could possibly be in a fight of the year, but he generally outclasses his opponents, and Winky's style will never put him in the running.

And his fight with castillo was very exciting and entertaining. :D
i think anytime you get two world-class fighters in the ring together, theyre going to hurt eachother. thats what makes fights like that candidates for fight of the year.

Leonard Hearns is the exception. Two top pound for pound fighters in the same weight division? That's an exception.
And what if it features a fight between two fighters ranked highly in the p4p rankings, like for example Leonard/Hearns I?
The top two p4p fighters in the sport at that time got together and not only produced the fight of the year in 1981, but also a Welterweight fight that will be well remembered for ages to come...
Hagler was invloved in a couple fight of the years when he was considered the p4p #1 guy in the sport (vs. Hearns & Leanard), same with Chavez (in 1990 vs. Taylor), etc., etc.
i.e. I don't get what you're trying to say.
Maybe in the past it was more likely, but superfights don't take place like they used to, because of promoters, money issues, pride, fear of blemishing an undefeated record, etc. So you all have made good points, but I see where Bloodshed is coming from in this thread. Unless some of these guys step up to the plate, and put their pride aside, it's unlikely that the top P4P guys will be in the fight of the year. The guys that people want to see fight can't agree on money, venue. etc.

Ali was, too, vs. Frazier and Foreman
