If prime Hagler fought prime MW Toney...
Who would win?
Why?
Describe the fight.
(This thread was inspired by an article about Toney/McCallum I which said that Bob Arum awarded Toney the Marvelous Marvin Hagler MW trophy after the fight, at Hagler's request.)
:boxing:
McCallum would have been a very tough fight for Marv but I see Hagler coming out on top. Mc Callum in my eyes was an all time top 20. Very under rated. He was not flashy but he was a very complete fighter.
Hagler would have had trouble early with a prime Michael Nunn. I just see Marvin doing what he did best...Outwilling and outfighting his foe.
A prime James Toney at 160 was an all time great. His style would have been very difficult for Marvin. On the other hand Marvin's ability to switch from right handed to southpaw so smoothly would have caused James some problems.
Based on style differences and work rate, I'd have to go with Marvin.
IMO, Toney only looks good against wide open defensive fighters. Stationary guys that load up are easy work for Toney and Mclellan was one of those once he started falling in love with his power.
Toney in his best days at middleweight was not at his best form overall. He didn't have the knowledge, he didn't know the tricks of the game, his game was still a little raw.
Even so, Toney and Hagler would have battled till the end, both guys having their moments...but Marvins determination would be VERY clear in the late rounds of the fight and he'd take a decision. Toney's handspeed and natural skills would keep him very competitive throughout the fight.
Neither guy gets knocked out...this isn't a beat-down anyway you slice it. I know we'll get some people who hate Toney in here claiming that...but I could never see it happening.
Hagler UD Toney. This would be my all-time gavorite fight to watch (if it was ever possible) as these are two of my 3 favs ever.
correct, at Middleweight, Toney was still a work in progress and struggled to make weight.
Hagler would be much too tough for Toney at that weight. No knockout, but a clear decision victory. Hagler's conditioning was second to none...and that would be his biggest advantage .
Gringo, he lost to Johnson and Tiberi. They aren't nearly as controversial as his losses to Griffin but it can be argued that he's lost 5 times at Middleweight.
Doesn't change the fact that he get's smacked around against crafty fighters. He looks bloody great when he's fighting plodding, face first fighters.
"Hagler destroys Toney" posts...
I posted that once, I'll repeat it.
Hagler would swarm JT's ass from round 1 to 12.
Hagler 118-109.

Yes Hagler was a complete and utter machine.
I'm out drinking for the night...hope I don't come back to "Toney is a bum" and "Hagler destroys Toney" posts...
No doubt Johnson was a very underappreciated fighter, but Toney can't erase the losses to Johnson, Griffin, Thadzi, Jones etc. He gets smacked around with crafty fighters.
He beat Johnson...again he beat him.
He does have problems with slick guys who have good footwork. Thadzi outworked him...he (Toney) was very lethargic in that fight.
Jones was possibly the worst style fight for him...and yes Jones smacked him around.
I've seen it as well...although it was some time back.
Johnson was a very good fighter...very underrated. He gave Toney all he could handle and legitimately dropped him. Toney surged in the late rounds and took it 7 rounds to 5, 114-113. A fight I wish I had on hand...like on my computer or something.
Dont get me wrong man. Toney is a GREAT fighter.
Lately I've just been thinking Hagler is god. I've been watching his old fights, and like I said.
He has never lost a fight really.........
and was undefeated for 11 years, against A class opposition.
wow.

damn close toney is my favorite fighter and is the highest skilled fighter since pernell whitiker but hagler would be in better shape and is a southpaw but hes a converted orthodox like winky wright so the powers in his jab and hook..which means toney could throw his right and not worry about haglers left which toney would love cuz toney loves his right.. toney would roll his shoulder on haglers jab throw a counter right and duck haglers hook at least 15-20 times
