Is Gatti Going into the Boxing Hall of Fame?

RED MENACE, I was responding to Evil Saint's moronic statement that Arturo Gatti is the "biggest box office draw since Mike Tyson". That statement is so wrong as to be laughable. I agree. There have been many fighters since Tyson that had bigger followings.

Gatti has a rabid cult following, and a larger fan base who watches his fights when available. True. At no point has he been a HUGE draw or the type of PPV attraction that justifies "he helped bring people back to watching boxing". When was that? Between the Tyson and Delahoya and Trinidad and Holyfield and Lewis blockbusters? Dude, EACH of the Hopkins-Taylor snoozers sold more than The Gatti-Mayweather PPV. Careful that you don't overstate Gatti's commercial appeal. Despite the PPV numbers, more people have seen the Gatti Ward fights then those Hopkins Taylor fights. I know people at work that know almost nothing about boxing, but they know about the Gatti vs Ward trilogy. Why else would Gatti and Ward be featured so strongly in EA Sports fight night series? Hell, I was in a bar last night and TSN was replaying Gatti vs Damgaard and everyone was watching. edit: Gatti and Ward are on the cover of the Xbox and Playstation2 versions of Fight Night Round3.s

He's a bigger draw than DLH? there is no way in hell that gatti is NOT going into the IBHOF. here are a few reasons why hes a future HOFer: biggest box office draw since mike tyson 4x in the Fight of the Year 2 division champ (the IBA is not a real title) if guys like braddock, mcguigan, and johansson can get it, gatti sure as hell can, too one of the most exciting fighters in history one of the biggest fan bases in decades yes, gatti will be in the HOF.

He sure hasnt been successful like other fighters, but DAMN he sure is entertaining to watch. Who knows? anything can happen.

Based on his record he will not go in the HOF, but if it were a popularity contest he'd be number 1 True. I think the possibility is slim, at best, but I wouldnt be the least upset if he was inducted. Guess we'll find out 5 plus yr's after he retires :D

The hall of fame for BOXERS is about performance. Gatti has not PERFORMED at a high level. The box-office draw stuff and the 'fight of the year' stuff is "entertainment". Not performance. If you are going to put Gatti in because of the Ward trilogy, then put Ward in too. See how silly that sounds? Also, you are ridiculous if you think Gatti was /is or ever has been a bigger draw than Oscar DelaHoya or Felix Trinidad. That is just a very, very stupid statement. Check your facts, maricon. Honestly, I don't think any sports hall of fame is all about performance, records and numbers. Obviously those things make you a shoe-in, but it is possibly for other athletes to get in, if they bring something else to the sport. Gatti may get in because he's one of few fighters that has helped bring people back to watching boxing in recent years. Some people may disagree with this decision, and I'm not sure what I think of it, but he has increased the popularity of boxing dramatically since his fights with Ward.
