I don't know anything about him. People tell me that he is the best Mexican fighter of all time, but they don't tell me why. Can somebody tell me what makes him so great?

chavez blew up his record fighting bums in mexico..ppl are in aw of his 100 plus wins thats all..he's overrated..de la hoya was a much better fighter
You know, my favorite Durán fights are those from his 147, 154, and 160 days. I think he was a smarter boxer who used his ring experience to beat or hang on with younger, stronger guys. Seriously, could you think of another lightweight beating Leonard at 147, hanging tough with Hagler at 160, beating KO machine, Pipino Cuevas at 154, and beating Iran Barkley at age 38? Durán was definitely special.
yeah, he was definitely one of the best in my opinion. and he fought for as long most guys' careers twice.
Manicini, i think was bigger than the other two, Duran won a title at 160, but he wasn't the Duran that anyone remembered from 135. Duran just had what it takes to stay in the game that long, but it's not that he really should have. These days with all these titles anybody with Duran's skills could smoke and drink all day and with a good management team and promoter win 1 of the big 4.

I think the fight with Mancini is a tossup, but Chávez is the bigger name and some fans who don't know Mancini, think that JCC would easily beat him. Durán was too big for Chávez. Proof is the fact that Durán even became a champion at 160, while JCC stopped being effective at 147.

ok ladies did anyone happen to see chavez' last match on tv azteca. why was that on that crappy channel? his promoter is dumb. thats mexican public access channel i think. nobody saw the fight and many dont know he lost to the bum grover wiley although he broke his hand.
I feel like Mancini could've been stopped on cuts. JCC hardly ever showed signs of abuse, he wouldn't wear down to the pressure and the pace. If Chavez had any problems there it would be the weight. Mancini is a little bigger, like how you mention Arguello, 147 and even 140 were a bit out of where he is best at like 135. Duran, though, might be the greatest 135 lber of all time.

I think the Mancini who faced Arguello and Chacón could have defeated Chávez. I think Durán would beat Chávez in a great war of inside fighting.

THOSE would be wars. I think that JCC beats Mancini, but I'm not so sure about Duran if it were at like 135.

I would rather see Chávez vs. Mancini and Durán.

You could be right. It would break my heart though if it were true :( . JCC was my favorite fighter as a young fan. I had to come around to DLH. I didn't like him at first, but he's has earned my respect. I know that I would like to see such a fight if it were possible.

I see what you mean, but there's something else. Chávez could get to movers with moderate power like Taylor and Camacho, but DLH was a fast mover with lots of power. For example, if Chávez cut the ring on Taylor, Meldrick would pitty pat while Chávez landed the heavy ones. Against DLH, JCC was getting pummeled when he tried to cut the distance. I am not a DLH hugger, I just think his style was all wrong for any JCC.

The style would give JCC a lot of problems. DLH wouldn't be the easiest fight for a prime JCC, but I just think that he would win it somehow like he always managed to do. He was a great fighter inside and out. Like I told, Piggu, boxrec doesn't keep any secrets.
I agree JCC would have done something. Well, he actually won a few rounds in the rematch, but I think it was a bad style matchup. About the KD, it has more to do with speed. Chávez just did not have enough reflexes to compete with DLH when they fought. Quartey was fast and accurate when he got his rhythm.
Yeah, the KD with Quartey was a 'flash' KD and those do depend on being hit with something you don't see. And Quartey does have good snap on his shots, so that if you get caught with your feet together or in the middle of your own punch, he could score a KD. I agree.
I totally agree, but I really feel like Chavez, especially seeing him in the state he was vs DLH, would've been able to eventually close the distance and get some things done. If Quartey can floor you, a prime JCC could knock you out.

Chávez was in his prime when he faced Taylor, and everyone knows that Meldrick was schooling him. I forgot Whitaker, who also schooled him in 1993.
I like Chávez, but slick boxers were his downfall.

They gave him trouble, but when Chavez was a young man, he didn't lose ;).

I have to disagree. I think that at 140, DLH was too fast and strong for any version of Chávez. Fighters with speed(Taylor, Randall, DLH) always gave Chávez trouble.

I think that a prime JCC could've beaten DLH. He took a lot of shots in that fight and his lip looked like it was gonna fall off. He was tough even then. If he were younger, he would've gotten to Oscar eventually. Especially if they could fight at say 140 instead of 147.
