I just watched Mikkel Kessler destroy Eric Lucas this weekend. I've never seen Kessler fight before, but I thought that his hard straight punches looked like they might be very effective vs the slapping haymakers thrown by Calzaghe or Lacy. He stands a little too straight up (like most euros do) though, so his chin might get checked, but he looked like the real deal to me. I was pretty impressed. Anybody know much about him?
I learnt a lot about Kessler when he came out to Sydney to face my boy, Mundine.
I've seen his recent fights with Cesar Green, Siaca, Mundine, Lucas, and a couple of earlier fights. The guy is one of the best talents to come out of Europe for quite some time. He's big, he's strong, he's quick, and he boxes very well.
I believe that Calzaghe is on the slide and Kessler would beat him, but I think it's more of a toss-up between Lacy and Kessler. It's hard to predict because they both haven't faced anyone like each other. It's a fight that should be made with both at their physical peaks, guaranteed fireworks.
How do you think that Calzaghe would stack up to Tarver?
Calzaghe is faster and more powerful i'd say, but Tarver is an awkward fighter. It depends how well Joe does against Lacy.
One thing i would love to see, before he takes to the states, would be a fight against Beyer.. Not that it would have the same potential as Lacy / Calzaghe, i would just be nice to see the german get beat up.
My biggest fear would be, if Beyer retires as another useless hero as Sven Ottke.
Winner Lacy / Calzaghe, against the winner Beyer / Kessler.. could be great fun!! and very unlikely.
Does the germans fighters have any fans on the outside? - anybody??
Beyer recently signed a 2 year contract with Sauerland which is expected to be his last this at least gives the hope the WBC belt will be on the line in some more decent fights in the future perhaps even a unification fight if Sauerland can get options.
Calzaghe is a tall Supermiddleweight though, about 6'2, walks around at 14 stone and has a decent enough reach, he should be good enough to overcome a titlist or two.

I would like to see Kessler be able to face them both, but like you said Calzaghe is likely to move up to light heavy. I fear for him there though where he will be at quite a reach disadvantage against most opponents.

I don't think that you will find many american fans of beyer. I heard many people in the US touting Dariusz as the man to beat Jones though. So german fighters aren't necessarily hated here, but the beyers and ottkes of the world don't help what we think of them.

I doubt it. My fear is that Beyer will be given a final fight against someone like Mario Veit and basically hand his belt on. :(

A Calzaghe victory doesn't mean that Lacy can't fight Kessler though. After all Calzaghe wll be moving up and will leave some vacant belts lying around and Lacy may well pick one up and its not like Lacy just lost to a bum. It would be an interesting match-up anyhow.

I'd say that Kessler is the second most marketable European fighter around at the moment, after Hatton. Both have appealing styles.
I used to doubt Hatton until the Tszyu fight. When I saw that he could take a lick then I knew he was for real. People on these forums talk like Mayweather is untouchable. I don't see Hatton stopping at pitty-pats, he walked through several train crash right hands from Tszyu and just put in his body work like he never got hit. Floyd can't keep a guy like Hatton off of him and he's the worst nightmare for Floyd's handlers since they know a guy like Hatton is who Floyd will hurt his hands on. PBF can maybe outbox the Golden Johnson's of the world with one hand but he'll get knocked out by Hatton if he's left one-handed late.
I hope Kessler vs Lacy can happen but Lacy has a very tough fight against Calazghe first and there is a very good chance he get beat

Lacy's muscles do look like they're "for show" a bit so you may well be right, though he is a formidable fighter and can only improve.
Calzaghe may well have the nous, though he may try and trade too much.
Kessler can jab the bout away from Lacy, but Lacy may well show his mettle.

I was thinking the same about Calzaghe sticking around to trade too much. Kessler's long straight shot is what it will take to beat a hooker like Lacy or even Calzaghe for that matter. Like you said earlier though, Calzaghe can be pretty cagy, jumping in with his hooks when you least expect it and then getting out with his legs. Lacy's got one gameplan and that's that. Calzaghe despite all the factors against him should be able to make a good showing.
I saw that on fightnews. I'm on the Kessler bandwagon I think. It pisses me off that American TV hasn't shown me this guy. If and when he does get Lacy, he'll seem like a Baldomir or a Danny Williams to the crowds here. They'll say Lacy didn't train or have some other weak excuse why he lost to a nobody while all the while there is a great fighter over there getting no US media attention.
Kessler is quite a tall guy for his weight, he´s 185cm tall, and the reach is the same. his jab works, and he´s good at keeping his cool.
I think he has a very fair chance against everyone you could trow at him.
His style just makes his opponents look bad, Lucas said after the fight: Its very frustrating to fight a guy like that, his jab is in your face all the time, and he´s gone when you try to retaliate.
Same thing with Siaca.
Yes - a good fighter sure gives you a "Bad day".
By the way, he will be in Atlantic City from saturday, trying to get some media attention.. Let us know if they find him.. ;)
But it seems that Kessler and Team Palle is gonna make a lot of noise stateside in the coming months. Even roumors of a HBO contract. I think it is easy to build up Kessler reputation in the American public. Hes got the starquality and looks needed to make the american dream. Lacy cant avoid him as none of the other socalled worldchamps. If you want to consider yourself the real King of smw you need to face Kessler
I've got to agree. I'm american and have seen the guy once and noticed his potential immediately. The fight with Lucas maybe should've been staged in the US though, since many US fans know Lucas pretty well. It's hard to find another well known opponent to US fans besides the likes of Lacy or Calzaghe or some washed up middle weight campaigning at 168 now.
I'd love to see it. But that is assuming that Lacy gets past Calzaghe. Kessler needs to be on Showtime or HBO. He looks like the next big thing at 168. Someone is going to expose Lacy though, whether it is Calzaghe or Kessler or some guy we would never think, some Buster Douglas somewhere who can avoid those wild haymakers for a few rounds and let the steam roll out of him because I'm convinced that Lacy can't 'box' and that he probably will have stamina problems in a long fight.
